Amazon MGM takes creative reins of James Bond, ending an era of family control of 007

NEW YORK (AP) — In a James Bond shakeup that stirred the film industry, Amazon MGM announced Thursday that the studio has taken the creative reins of the 007 franchise after decades of family control. Longtime Bond custodians Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said they would be stepping back.

Amazon is gaining creative control over the James Bond franchise, following a yearslong standoff with the family that controlled those rights since the first Bond film premiered more than 60 years ago. Amazon acquired the rights to distribute Bond movies a few years ago. But Barbara Broccoli, the steward of the franchise, didn't trust the company to take creative risks or stay true to the Broccoli family's tradition of insisting on big, theatrical events. ? Broccoli relented, and Amazon will get to set the terms going forward — including deciding who will play Bond, finding a script and determining a production schedule for the next movie, The Wall Street Journal reports (gift link).
