Moderators lazarus Posted December 13, 2006 Moderators Posted December 13, 2006 That would be a cool idea for a youth group. I can imagine 30 teens from my previous church going to our local farmers market and trying that! I would be interesting. Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
Neil D Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Lazerus... I like the idea of the youth group, setting up a booth at a local famers market, announcing FREE hugs to anyone who desires one...or two.... I am sure that there would be ramifications...but who cares? The world would be a slightly better place...and warmer... Taylor Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 that is cool. I think that there are many people out there that are never hugged either because they have no living family or because of sad situations in their lives. Quote
Amelia Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 "Sometimes, a hug is all what we need. Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, A man whos sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives. In this age of social disconnectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal. As this symbol of human hope spread accross the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED. What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe inspiring. In the Spirit of the free hugs campaign, PASS THIS TO A FRIEND and HUG A STRANGER! After all, If you can reach just one person... PS. The response to this video has been nothing short of overwhelming and touching. Hugs to every single one of you who messaged. There has been thousands of emails from all over the world by people seeking to participate in the Free Hugs campaign and asking for permission. You do not need permission. This is the peoples movement, this is *your* movement. With nothing but your bare hands you can make THE difference. Imagine all the people." aka Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 What an utterly remarkable idea for promoting positive body talk. A truly good mental health campaign. What about us going to the board meeting of our local church and suggesting we incorporate this idea in the next mission-outreach program? Quote
Taylor Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 When participating on mission projects I have been in countries where hugs were the normal part of the culture. It was a bit strange at first, even though I am a hugger, but after returning to the at times "steril and proper" American culture....I missed the warm huggy culture I had left in that foreign country. Quote
Dottie Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 I walked in here with a bad attitude because of the problems of the day, and now I am smiling, and my personal "hugger" has been away for three days... Quote

Administrators Naomi Posted December 18, 2006 Administrators Posted December 18, 2006 Hey Pam, Loved the video and the idea of Free Hugs. As Taylor said in many countries hugs are an acceptable part of the culture. And, in some of our churches in the US one can receive a lot of hugs. You just can't leave a place filled with warm brotherly-sisterly hugs feeling empty and alone. While my new church is filled with wonderful people hugs are definitely not acceptable and I find I really miss the warmth of Sabbath hugs. Beryl Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 Hi, Toothfairy. Why propose hugging for the next outreach program? My experience on some Boards is that it would be much better if we began AND ENDED every BOARD MEETING with a hugging session. Maybe they would then always act with love and civilly. Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.
aka Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Beryl, your idea is way better than mine (you don't think I was being serious, do you? ) because I see the valuable effect. Getting the brethern more relaxed and less defensive at the beginning of the board meeting after a group hugging session. Then at the end getting the brethern atoning with one another from the heated disagreements by a group hugging session. :firefox: Quote
Neil D Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 What is amazing to me is this sentence from Jesus- How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling... If that is not an endorsement for hugging, I don't know what is... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Dottie Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 Pam - - My husband had to go visit his sisters as his mother had died. They were not a pysically close family. Wehn he came back, I asked if he had ever, in his whole life, ever hugged his sisters. His reply, "We don't do that kind of thing." (????) But he hugs me! Quote
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted December 23, 2006 Author Members Posted December 23, 2006 I guess some people are very uncomfortable with the closeness of being hugged. Myself - I love hugs....but fate seems to deign me only half a dozen over the course of a year. 'Cepting here.... bevin Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 Hmmm - I am okay with hugs amongst immediate family members, but beyond that violates my personal space. My middle daughter, on the other hand, really appreciates hugs from almost any friend /Bevin Quote
Aliensanctuary Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 I'm generally not much of a hugger, but have loosened up a little more lately. I do hug my wife often during the days we're both at home. I know she wouldn't appreciate seeing me hug attractive females in her presence, though, and I don't. I am OK with hugging old ladies at church that miss me, but of course, there's zero chance of any sexual element in that. I have no interest at all in hugging men, young or old. I don't picture Jesus as having been much of a hugger. Quote The Parable of the Lamb and the Pigpen https://www.createspace.com/3401451

Romans 16:16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. 1 Corinthians 16:20 All the brethren greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. 2 Corinthians 13:12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 1 Thessalonians 5:26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. Gee, if you guys are not "huggers", how the heck do you guys handle "holy kisses"???? Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Aliensanctuary Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 Now wouldn't that be a newsworthy headline sensation: Quote: SDA Men Now Lip-Kissing in Church"It's OK now for men to kiss each other in the church sanctuary," one lusty Adventist pastor said yesterday. "The apostle Paul told us to do it, and what's good for Paul must be good for us, too. So all of you men, young and old, just line up in front of this here congregation and let's all give each other some holy sugar." I'll kiss and hug my wife anytime and hug my 4 daughters whenever I see them, but kissing and hugging acquaintances in or out of church does not interest me and could open the door to spousal jealousy or something that violates one or more of the 10 Commandments. So brother Neil, how many men have you kissed recently? Quote The Parable of the Lamb and the Pigpen https://www.createspace.com/3401451

Woody Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I guess that I am old fashioned. When I was growing up there was NO way one man would hug another. Under NO circumstances. No adays ... it is a common greeting. But I reject it. I will not hug any one I am not in love with. My dad and I always shook hands even though I care about him deeply. Now adays I do hug him. But that is just because of culture. I always thought a good hand shake was better. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
