I've learned to be very cautious when reading things from Adventist scholars but at 1st glance the premise of the article is something I agree with - I'm pleasantly surprised here phkrause! 

Aquinas and St. Augustine wrote about this.

The author of the Review article cited above is a main-line theologian and not considered to be on the fringe of Adventism.

The Internet is full of discussion on this topic, including citations to the Review article by Angel Rodríguez.  However, it appears that the article has been removed from the Internet as I cannot find it. All citations, including the one at the beginning of this thread, come up empty.

Was there a reversal of position here that flowed down from the magisterial authority of the General Conference?

There are a number of articles on the internet that cite the article and suggest that is is wrong.  None of the ones that I have found. give enough information for me to know what the article actually said.  I suspect that the Review removed it simply because the editors did not want further discussion.  I really do not know.
