LONDON (AP) — Amazon says a massive outage of its cloud computing service has been resolved as of Monday evening, after a problem disrupted internet use around the world, taking down a broad range of online services, including social media, gaming, food delivery, streaming and financial platforms.

This morning's Amazon Web Services outage affected some 2,500 companies and 11 million people, according to data from Downdetector.

Zoom, Venmo, WhatsApp and many gaming, banking, social media and consumer sites saw large spikes in reported outages, as did some of Amazon's own products and services.

? Zoom out: Just three massive cloud providers — Amazon, Microsoft and Google — serve as the technical backbone of the internet, Axios' Emily Peck writes.

That means a glitch — like today's, centered in Amazon's East Coast operations — can take down a whole lot of sites and apps all at once. But the good news is that major outages are rare, experts say.
