25 years ago today, 1981: An important part of Battle Creek's image faded into history this month with a simple name change. The Battle Creek Sanitarium Hospital has changed its name to the Battle Creek Adventist Hospital. The hospital's board of directors determined that the word "sanitarium" has resulted in misunderstanding about the 155-bed acute-care hospital's programs. The Seventh-day Adventist Church began the hospital in 1866 as the Western Health Reform Institute. Ten years later, after Dr. Kellogg took over its management, he renamed it the Battle Creek Sanitarium. Kellogg used the word because he believed that people did not like the word "reform." When the doctor was informed that the word was not in the dictionary, he replied that was not news to him, but that it would appear in the next edition of the dictionary. He was right.
