there buster Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Quote: Quote: Since Natural Selection drives Evolution forward, then whether we "like the outcome" or not, we have no scientific basis to oppose it. We don't need a scientific basis to oppose something, we just need an irrational/rational fear/desire... But Natural Selection is the active agency that produces progress. Ought we to oppose it for any reason? Quote “the slovenliness of our language makes it easier to have foolish thoughts.” George Orwell
bevin Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Quote: But Natural Selection is the active agency that produces progress. Ought we to oppose it for any reason? Natural selection is not an agency which can be opposed. Natural selection is simply what happens - some individuals breed, some don't, some live, some don't. By changing the likelyhood of breeding or dieing we are not opposing natural selection, we are simply changing what is naturally selected. We do it all the time - eg: by wearing sweaters, wearing glasses, grooming facial hair, and using cups. /Bevin Quote
there buster Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Quote: Natural selection is not an agency which can be opposed. Sounds a lot like god. Like I said in the first place. Let Natural Selection take care of it. Quote “the slovenliness of our language makes it easier to have foolish thoughts.” George Orwell
bevin Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Quote: Like I said in the first place. Let Natural Selection take care of it. Why don't we get rid of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and let Natural Selection take care of it? Because we don't like the probable outcome, so we take actions to get an outcome we prefer. /Bevin Quote

D. Allan Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 my uneducated view: 1. natural selection will take care of every thing. There is no stopping the process. 2. that does not mean we have no free choice to do what we think best. we may even attempt to influence the outcome of natural selection. for instance: a. slow cO2 emmisions, or ignore them. b. educate ourselves or live with the animals in the forests. c. wage war or understand or enemies. we are free to do the best we can without leaving things to chance. natural selection will then 'decide' if we were correct. ?
