Quote:
Though Hurricane Katrina has dropped from news headlines in the past year, Judy and Sam Im of Battle Creek said the devastation in the region still is monumental.

In November, the Ims traveled with their two daughters to the most hurricane-ravaged areas of New Orleans. They assisted in providing medical care through Operation Blessing and the International Medical Alliance, nonprofit medical volunteer groups providing aid in the aftermath of the storm...

"We all decided we had to go help," said Judy, 62. "We did not realize the level of destruction that still existed until we got there. This is America, but it looked like a third-world country. It was shocking to us."

The Ims came to Detroit in 1969 from Seoul, Korea, where Sam completed his medical residency. They came to Battle Creek in 1974, after Sam was hired as a surgeon at the former Battle Creek Adventist Hospital.

The Ims are devout Seventh-day Adventists — a religion that focuses on a healthy lifestyle and providing service to others — and were founding members of the Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church at 300 W. Michigan Ave.

The Ims always encouraged their children to travel the world and help people in need — from Kenya to Madagascar — but said this trip was about "helping people at home, in America."

Nice publicity. Thanks for posting this.

By the way, I heard on the radio news that Battle Creek's "Cereal Village"(?) is closing down, because of lack of patronage. Nobody goes to that type of amusement park any more, they said.

I'd always wanted to see it. Last time I was in Battle Creek it hadn't even been built yet.
