Thomas Tillam described the image to the beast in  his 1657 book, The Seventh-day Sabbath Sought out and Celebrated. According to SDA historian Brian Ball, “Tillam argued that the Sabbath had already become the central issue in the final conflict between good and evil and that those who kept the seventh day were ‘obtaining the victory over the mark of the beast’”

(Brian Ball, The Sabbath in Post Reformation England, p. 22).

7th day Baptist T.M. Preble, in the early 1845 tract which convinced Joseph Bates of the Sabbath truth had said, “Therefore it appears to me that all who keep the first day of the week for “the Sabbath” are Pope's Sunday Keepers!!  and GOD’S SABBATH BREAKERS!!!” (Early Writings, p.19).

Joseph Bates introduced James and Ellen White to the Sabbath in his “The Sabbath, A Perpetual Sign.” The first edition was published in August of 1846. The second edition came out in January of 1847.

Bates added this to the text of the second edition: “Is it not clear that the first day of the week for the Sabbath or holy day is a mark of the beast. It surely will be admitted that the Devil was and is the father of all the wicked deeds of Imperial and Papal Rome. It is clear then from this history that Sunday, or first day, is his Sabbath throughout Christendom. “

Ellen White wrote to Joseph Bates in April of 1847, saying, “I saw all that “would not receive the mark of the Beast, and of his Image, in their foreheads or in their hands,” could not buy or sell. [Revelation 13:15-17.] I saw that the number (666) of the Image Beast was made up; [Revelation 13:18.] and that it was the Beast that changed the Sabbath, and the Image Beast had followed on after, and kept the Pope’s, and not God’s Sabbath (A Word to the Little Flock,  15.1). Manuscript 5 from 1849 makes a similar statement.

The Sabbath was not the only issue that led the SDA pioneers to identify Rome with the mark of the beast. J.N. Andrews and Hiram Edson pointed to alterations in the baptismal rite and the Lord’s Supper as evidence of Rome’s connection to the mark of the beast.

J.N. Andrews identified the mark of the beast with the Papacy and apostate Protestantism in his article “Thoughts on Revelation XIII and XIV.” (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, vol.1 no. 11, May 19, 1851). After describing the two beasts portrayed in Revelation 13, Andrews says

Another religious power enforces the claims of the first beast, and his           image, and causeth the world to receive his mark. What is this mark of the beast? It is the mark of that beast to whom the image was made,—the first beast. Rev. xix, 20; xvi, 2. But it is enforced by the two-horned beast.  Hence, we understand it as an institution of Papacy, enforced by Protestantism.” This institution is “…..found in a weekly sabbath which the " Man of Sin " has placed in the stead of the Sabbath of the fourth commandment.”

Citing Colossians 2:12 and Romans 6:2-5, Andrews reasoned that by substituting sprinkling for immersion, the symbol of resurrection evident in rising from the baptismal waters was obscured. He saw the substitution of Sunday for Sabbath as a way for Rome to honor the resurrection, having hidden the baptismal symbolism by replacing immersion with sprinkling. The alteration of the communion service also attracted his ire: “The ordinances of the Lord's supper and of baptism commemorate the death and resurrection of our Lord. [I Co. 11: 23-26 Rom. vi,] and were intended only for his church.  Thus creation and redemption are both commemorated by their appropriate memorials.  But the presumptuous arrogance of man has changed these memorials throughout.”

Mary Seymour, in the Campbellite magazine “Millennial Harbinger,” denied that the first day Sabbath was the mark of the beast. J. N. Andrews replied, “The writer next declares that there is not a "shadow of a shade of proof," that that Papal institution, the first day Sabbath, is the mark of the Beast.  This is a "short and easy method" to dispose of an unwelcome subject. That that institution did originate with the great Papal apostasy, and that it is the most prominent mark of that power that should, in its arrogant, blasphemous assumptions, "think to change times and laws," [Dan. vii, 25,] cannot be denied” (ARSH vol. 2 no. 13, March 2, 1852).

The same issue of the ARSH included correspondence from a Brother T. He denied that Sunday keeping was the mark of the beast. He cited Romans 14 to make his point. He also rejected the idea that the 7th day Sabbath was God’s seal. Included in the answer to Brother T’s objections was the following:

“May the Lord prepare Sabbath-keepers to stand in that time and bear the seal  of the living God. After they keep all the commandments and repent before God of past transgression of his holy law, their only hope of salvation is through faith in the atoning blood of Jesus.” Furthermore, “A man may outwardly observe all ten of the commandments of God, yet if he is not benefited by the atonement of Jesus it will profit him nothing.”

Hiram Edson, like Andrews, affirmed that Sunday observance is the mark of the beast: “And thus the question is settled that the institution and observance of Sunday, the first day or the week, as holy time, is the sign or the mark or the beast.”  He disapproved of sprinkling in place of immersion, as did Andrews. He also took issue with substituting a wafer for the bread and wine of the communion service:

”The beast has also changed and cast down to the ground true memorials of  salvation and redemption through Christ. We have redemption through his suffering that sprinkling and blood. The beast has changed the memorial of this, by withholding the bread and wine from the laity and substituting the wafer in its stead. Baptism is a memorial of the burial and resurrection or Christ, and of' a surety or pledge of the resurrection of the just in the likeness of Christ. See Rom, vi, 3-5; 1 Cor. xv, 29; Col. ii, 12. This memorial he has changed to sprinkling which bears no resemblance of a burial or resurrection. In this he has changed the ordinance, besides breaking the everlasting covenant. Isa. xxiv” (ARSH vol. 2 no. 5, Oct. 7, 1851).

Brother Truesdell, in a letter to the editor said that Hiram Edson’s article, from which the above quotes are cited, convinced him that Sunday observance is the mark of the beast (ARSH vol.2 no.7, Nov. 25, 1851). A letter from Sarah Griggs, appeared in the same issue. She wrote: “The sign, or mark of the beast, is evidently the keeping of the first day of the week, instead of the Holy Sabbath, which God did not command; but was instituted by that power which should think to change TIMES and LAWS. Dan. vii, 25.”

Adolf Deissman’s Bible Studies says the Greek word translated “mark” in Revelation 13 was a term for the seal of Imperial Rome.

They [various papyrus documents from the first century] inform us of a mark which was commonly used in imperial times, which: (1) Is connected with the Roman Emperor, (2) Contains his name (possibly also his effigy) and the year of his reign, (3) Was necessary upon documents relating to buying, selling, etc., and (4) Was technically known. Χαραγμα” [Strong’s number 5480] (Adolf Deissman, Bible Studies, p 242)

Deissmann’s “Bible Studies” did not appear in English until 1901. German editions appeared in 1895 and 1897, well after the pioneers connected the papacy to the image and mark of the beast. “Bible Studies” indicates that manuscript archaeology supported views on the mark of the beast held by English Baptists of the 17th century. Once the SDA pioneers had settled on the Sabbath as the seal, Sunday observance made perfect sense as the mark. The third angel’s message was a warning against receiving the mark, i.e., Sunday worship, instead of the [Sabbath] Seal of God.

((Gibberish deleted, it was binary for a graphic or something )

The seal of Imperial Rome, i.e., the mark of the beast in Revelation 13.

Red ink was used, some of which is still visible on certain documents from the first and second centuries.

In early Adventism it was claimed that the Roman Catholic Pope wore an item of clothing that contained a Latin phrase that could be enumerated to the number 666.  This charge is totally lacking in evidence.  The alleged photographic evidence of this has been proven to have been a doctored photograph in which the Latin was added in the printing process to the photograph.    My sincere apologies to the Roman Catholic Church for any complicity that Adventists may have had in this falsehood.  Yes, I will state that people who published such falsehood did believe that it was truth.  But, all of us have a responsibility to check the facts for error.

Hanseng, appreciate your post here on the origins of the “ Mark of The Beast” being Sunday worship. Most interesting, thank you.

I will share what I have gleaned over the years in my studies on this subject.

Assuming on my part that Thomas Tillam excepted the “Historic” method of interpretation on apocalyptic prophecy he would have believed that the first trumpet judgments of Rev.,8 & 9, started in 395 AD, and he was living during the 6th, since it sounded in 1449. What effect did the sounding of five, going on six trumpet judgements have on Thomas Tillam? What effect have they had on your life? Nothing? My point I’ll make here is that understanding the worlds economic conditions with the trumpets being historic and symbolic makes Tillam and our early church fathers understanding of the “Mark of The Beast” some what believable.

However, if we understand the law of chronology within apocalyptic prophecy, based on Gods fore-knowledge, we must realize that Rev. 8:2-5 must be fulfilled before the first trumpet sounds. This has not happened, thus the trumpets are yet future. The first four are to be understood as literal not symbolic as “Historicist” interpret them. And they will sound over a very short period of time in which one third of the earth will be destroyed. Understood literally we are talking huge earth quakes, a meteorite shower, and a couple of huge astroids, one hitting an ocean another a continent.

There is nothing in the past to compare these judgments of God with except Noah’s flood, which destroyed the whole earth, these just one third. But think of the world’s infrastructure that shall be severely damaged. Communication satellites, electrical grids, gas lines, highways and overpasses, bridges, manufacturing, health care, every thing will be affected. God will send these trumpet judgments to arrest the attention of every living individual on earth. Why because He wants us to know that probation is closing.

Reeling from these judgments the world will be far different than what early advocates of the Mark had envisioned. In reality due to the world’s severely damaged infrastructure famine will be worldwide. Thus the ability to buy and sell food to stave off starvation will be the means the beast (whom ever you think the beast is) will use to force individuals into receiving his mark. It will be a tattoo on the right hand or forehead since technology will be sparse at best. A tattoo will be easily administered, non-transferable since it will be a matter of life or death, and very easily to identify. Only the true followers of Christ will reject it, even unto death.

The “Mark of The Beast” is very simple to understand if we just simply believe what the Bible says. It’s the name of the beast or the number of his name, period! God does not inform us what that name will be, but that 666 is the number of its name. However, to claim that the “Mark of The Beast” is a day of worship goes completely against a thus sayeth the Lord.

Chaplain Matthews,

I agree that it is unfortunate that we have had to resort to historical fiction to establish our beliefs. There is an apparent general consensus that the expression Vicarivs Filii Dei does not appear on any papal regalia. Some have suggested that it did in the more distant past. Apparently there is no proof that is the case.

For this reason, I attempted to post a picture of the genuine "mark of the beast," the Xaragma of Revelation 13. There is no dispute that this seal of imperial Rome appeared on official documents, from the  era of the NT. Those interested to see what the real mark of the beast looked like can refer to Adolf Deissmann's book Bible Studies.

While contemporary Adventism tends to focus on the Sabbath change as a reason to revile the papacy, early SDA took issue with other matters as well, as documented in the post. Unfortunately, I must point out that an aversion to the papacy no way appplies to the many fine Roman Catholic adherents
