My grandmother took pictures of the last time it snowed in Loma Linda. It was in the 1940s. I lived there from 1958 to 1994 and it never snowed in Loma Linda during those years.

I presently live about 25 miles east of Loma Linda and it snowed here too. It snows about once a year here. A few years ago it snowed in the month of March.

Ya we are heading up to Big Bear for the kids to play in the snow. They have 7-10 inches up there! Yeah!!!

We got a little of snow here in La Sierra Riverside as well. Well it was more of tiny frozen balls of ice falling softly. Hail? Shrug. I do not know. In any case it did not last long and it did not stick. It happened around 7 am today

Nope = one of the effects of global warming is to cause changes in the airflows, so not everywhere sees a consistent increase in temperature

We still have no snow on the ground here in NH - and the climatologists are stating this is almost certainly because of global warming, not El Nino or other standard variation.

There was a discussion in the newspaper this morning about the "global warming debate". In fact there has been almost no climatologists disagreeing with it happening since the late 90's - it is the head-in-the-sand opposed-to-the-implications group that is causing "the debate". Since they don't want to deal with it, they deny it exists - a very mature attitude...

The Climatologists on TV in our area say that ""Global Warming"" is a myth. Throught history there has been cycles of warming and cooling.

The folks at AccuWeather have been dismantling the "sky-is-falling" fear tactics of global warmng alarmists for quite some time. And AccuWeather is no right-wing political think tank. Actually they clearly state they are climatologists with an interest only in weather, not politics. They don't claim global warming isn't happening, only that the weather we have been experiencing the last several years is not a result of it.

So how do they explain the arctic melt that is happening now, that they have no record of happening since recording started?

The Ice has been receeding for thousands of years. It is nothing new. The US used to be covered with it during the Ice Age.

These climatologists are not claiming that global warming isn't happening. They are simply pointing out that the mild winters and strong huricane seasons we have had in recent years is not directly related to global warming.

I think it is well accepted that global warming is taking place. The controversy is if it is caused by increased CO2, increased solar activity or a combination of both. Global warming has occured in the past before the industrial age. So it is not such a black and white issue. However the consensus is that global warming is taking place.

When Eric the Red discovered Greenland it was not covered with Ice but was covered with Green vegetation. When Leif Ericson Erics son discovered Winland which was North America just to the west of Greenland it was covered with trees and grape vines hence the name Vineland. This was around 1000 AD.

Then around 1350 AD the colony in Greenland became cold and died off due to the Plague and colder tempertures.

Europe recorded some of the most warmest temps during this period. Even the Alpine glaciers melted way back from their normal levels.

It is also interesting that Jupiter is also in a global warming trend at the same time as Earth.

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/060504_red_jr.html

Global warming is happening on Mars as well.

==============================

Global Warming on Mars?

A study of the ice caps on Mars may show that the red planet is experiencing a warming trend.

After decades of thinking that the ice caps on Mars were mostly carbon dioxide (dry ice), planetary geologists are starting to think that those caps may be mostly fresh water ice instead.

Caltech planetary scientists have been keeping a close eye on the dozens of deep, wide pits in the southern martian ice caps. These pits have been growing larger every year, but they never get any deeper.

The scientists believe this means that there is a layer of dry ice that is evaporating off of a thicker layer of water ice. The yearly increases in evaporation may be caused by a global warming trend happening on Mars.

If both Mars and Earth are experiencing global warming, then perhaps there is a larger phenomenon going on in the Solar System that is causing their global climates to change.

==========================================================

Could it be this is a solar system wide event and not just an earth event. Maybe the cycle of the sun causes global warming that comes and recedes in cycles. The fact that we are at the hight of our industrial civilization is just a coinsidence.

'Global climate change' is probably a better term than 'global warming', since some areas are and will continue to get colder rather than warmer, even if the average temperature across the whole globe will be higher. The effects are oddly distributed. Australia as a whole got more rain than average last year, yet most of the southern half (where people actually live) is in severe (as in the most severe since records were kept) drought.

But yeah, it's tempting to ascribe every odd weather thing that happens to climate change... but lots of weird weather things happened before that. And as Shane pointed out, change is pretty normal for climate. Doesn't mean we can afford to be complacent about the current climate change though - it kinda sucked to be a member of the Greenland colony...

In a few decades Greenland may again be what it was when It was descovered by the Vikings warm and furtile.

What will suck is this. Right now the food basket of the world is in the USA Great plains. As the climate warms the food belt will shift north to Canada and to Russia steppes. Canada and Russia will become the food providers of the world.

California will become tropical. We will be growing Mangos instead of Oranges.

The US great plains will still be fertile unless there is a drought. It is just there will be more fertile land made avaiable to harvest from and with increased CO2 levels, the harverts may be much larger too.

The US great plains will still be fertile unless there is a drought. It is just there will be more fertile land made avaiable to harvest from and with increased CO2 levels, the harverts may be much larger too.

The main crop is wheat in the great plains. If the climate gets to hot it will be more dry and that means wheat will not grow there anymore. The crop will shift futher north which will be less hot and most likely more rain.

More CO2 does not mean more crops. One has to have furtile lands and rain as well. More heat means that the rain patterns will change as well.

We know for a fact that Europe had heat waves during the time the Vikings discovered greenland and winland in north america.

Tree rings from Oregon to Puru also tells us that during that time there was a severe drought that lasted 800 years and ended about the time the ice returned to Greenland in 1350 AD.

The drought started in 500 AD and went to 1350 AD. During that time the earth was warmer than normal and the ice packs receded in Europe and Greenland.

Also during this same period the Mayan civilization in the Yucatan Penisula in Mexico disappeard most likely due to this same lack of water.

So more CO2 will not mean more crops in the USA. It will also mean less rain.

Read the dateline for the last global warming and what it did to earths history and the centuries long drought that resulted.

We have tropical rain forests in some of the warmest areas on earth. We also have pipeline and desalazation technology that wasn't around in 500 AD. The issue isn't so much the heat but lack of rain. We simply don't know what the weather patterns over the great plains is going to be until the time comes. And if it does turn dry and the need is there, technology can get the water to where it needs to be.

Yes we do have Desalination technology but that is expensive. States would be reluctant to use that. Also it would take a couple of years per plant to build as well. The wheat fields depend on rain. I doubt that the goverment would spend billions on water desalination plants to water the wheat fields.

Yes we have tropical forests but only in areas where there is an abundance of rain. Much of North America are desert. Technically even Most of California in the south is a desert. We get 12 inches on average per year. That is a desert. Much of our water comes from the colorado river and that contract runs out in a few years or so I have read. Colorado want a bigger share of that water as well when the contract ends.

Doughts have destroyed wheat crops before and they will do so again. With more frequency in the future I fear.

Californians need to learn to live without their lush green lawns.

True but it is hard to change the infrstructure that is in place now. I have lots of fruit trees in my yard. They grow well in this climate but they do have and need an irrigation system at their bases.

In Arizona they have rock gardens and ironwood trees growing in the yards. Ironwood is a wood that is harder than oak and is a desert tree that does not take much water.

Lawns do not grow well in 125 degree summers in any case.

A couple of cities where I live have desalination plants and it has only increased the cost of water marginally. The greater expense would be moving the water through pipelines. If the nation's economic security depends on it, it will happen. We built a pipe line accross Alaska due to economics.

Santa Barbara considered building De Salination plants during the last long drought. They figured it would take three years and increase the cost of water two fold. Right now they have all their water in a behind a few dams in the area. Fortunately a rain storm staalled over those dams and filled up all the lakes behind the dams with water in a few hours of downpours in the mountains above the lakes. The Desalination plants were never built.

Alaska's Governor has offered California water from the Alaskan Glaciers but we would have to build the pipeline through canada down to California. That would be a major undertaking and would take 10 years and billions but would supply california with water for years. So far California has not taken Alaska up on that.

And of course, if the Alaskan glaciers are vanishing as fast as most of the other glaciers on earth, there may be little or none left by the time the pipe is finished.
