The good news is that the temperatures rose enough to melt what was on the street. Temperatures are single digit but wind is not blowing so hard today. A friend came by today who works at City Hall. She drove her husband's 1-Ton dooley and parked it in front of the bldg for 4 hours. When she moved it, it's weight had not make a dent in the thick ice. I put on my golf shoes when I go into the yard. Kinda cool ... literally. So thankful that we haven't lost elect power in our area :CD Another major storm is predicted to arrive this weekend. I would like to get to a store and post office before it hits ... but won't complain as long as I have elect. Electrical power is a good thing! Dr. Shane Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 We lost power one winter when tempenture dropped below freezing here and it was miserable. So I installed a propane space heater which doesn't need electricity and is actually cheaper to heat the house. So now I don't get too concerned about cold snaps. First, I called my brother in Nebraska and he confirmed that it is getting very cold there, but they don't worry about it, because the town has a generator in case they lose power. Second. Shane, please don't run your propane heater in the house without adequate ventilation. There is a chance of carbon monoxide poisoning! Quote

Here and there you can see dying snowpeople and fort remnants. Today we had really weird fog/mist. Almost like being at the beach. When I went to college, just 10 years ago, all residencial gas heaters were vented. That allowed the carbon monoxude (CO) to be carried out of the house. CO dectectors were to be installed in homes in case the appliance malfunctioned and didn't vent propperly. The only danger of CO poisoning was from a malfunctioning unit. When I bought this heater, the saleswoman told me it was ventless. I raised my eyebrows. I figured I knew more than she did. How could it be ventless? Where would the CO go? She assured me it burned clean and there was a bigger danger of it burning all the oxygen (O2) out of the air than CO poisoning but that it has a O2 sensor to automatically shut it off before it burns all the O2 out of a room. Well, being the skeptic that I am. I bought a CO detector and installed it about 3 feet from the heater. It gives a digital reading of how many CO parts per million are in the room. An alarm goes off when the level reaches 100. It has never left 0! I also installed an outside air duct a couple feet from the heater to provide O2 from outside.
