Hanseng Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Euthanasia has been going on in American hospitals for decades under the guise of "end of life" care. Fairly straightforward protocol. The patient is put on an IV drip. A product such as morphine or dilaudid is administered for "comfort." The patient dies in a few days. Medically unsophisticated [as one physician put it] patients and their families, may, in the face of imminent death from a terminal diagnosis request/demand that "everything" be done, costing thousands upon thousands of dollars for futile treatment, paid for by YOU, the taxpayer, in many cases. If the families had to foot the bill for expensive and useless treatment , which in some cases prolongs suffering, grandma's life might not seem so precious. AIDS presented a tricky scenario. Some patients couldn't take the pain, the blindness, the incapacitation, the hopelessness. They committed suicide. Those who did hold on ultimately received protease inhibitors, a miracle drug which gave them a new lease on life. Actuarial services lost big [in the short term] when protease inhibitors came out. An AIDS patient would come to them and make them beneficiaries of their life insurance policy in exchange for a cash payment. A patient with a $100,000 policy might sign it over for [I'm guessing] $60,000. The company could expect a $40,000 profit in a few months. AIDS patients who responded well to protease inhibitors might live for years, a bust for the actuaries. Draw your own conclusion. Quote
