there buster Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 A quick search at CA turns up many references to Bush as "the beast" "Nazis" "thought police" and "gestapo." Several have claimed he is stamping out freedom as we knew it. In that environment, I wonder if it is wise to show him saying good things about the SDA church. No doubt we'll soon have a thread on how this shows the creeping union of church and state. Quote “the slovenliness of our language makes it easier to have foolish thoughts.” George Orwell
Woody Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Thanks for sharing the video with Bush on SDAs. I hate to bring out the negative since I am a Bush supporter ... But, Bush made one statement that I disagree with. He stated that the US does not promote any one religion. That is not accurate. The US only recognizes only ONE religion. That would be the Catholic Church. It is the only church that the US sends a representitive to. My dear favorite president ... Reagan did that horrible deed. Now you can "claim" that they somehow think of the Vatican as a country ... but I don't buy it based on reality. It is only a very small city ... not a country. It serves only as the head of the church. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Thanks for that about Bush. Some people don't like his policies and that's OK. But let's remember that he's the president of all Americans. He's an honorable man and deserves to be respected despite disagreements people may have. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Dr. Shane Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 On the campaign trail in 2000 Bush said that he doesn't believe in religious tolerance in spite of his religion but because of his religion. He proved that sentiment to be more than words after 9/11 when he actively encouraged Americans not to blame American muslims for the terrorist attacks. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... The people calling President Bush those names must not realize what the real Nazis and the gestapo were like. But seriously, what is neither right nor wise would be to let those kinds of remarks have any influence on whether the President is shown saying good things about the SDA church. He is, after all, the President of all of us. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. The true Christian faith, as Roger Williams and William Penn understood, really does call us to give all people the same freedom of religious expression that we demand for ourselves. That's what America is all about. That's not to say we have always lived up to our ideals, but, thank God, at least that is America's ideal. If anyone thinks it doesn't matter, let him just imagine if it wasn't. Planey Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Did any of you watch the link I posted to Hilary's speech and note how similar it was to Dubya's? Graeme Quote Graeme____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted January 20, 2007 Moderators Posted January 20, 2007 Yes, I did. Maybe they had the same speechwriters. Or maybe both speeches took place at the same event. Hillary's took 2+ minutes, and GWB's only 59 seconds. Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Woody Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 I really doubt that Hilary or Bush really know anything about SDAs. They were just reading what they were told to read. I don't believe either one sounded more sincere than the other. They are both just after support for their political causes. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. bevin Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 It is possible they know SDA'ism through either ADRA or through one of the highly placed SDA chaplains. It is doubtful they know very much about the SDA beliefs or culture Of course all they are doing is looking for votes. They are, after all, American politicians. They are obviously canned speeches - with a few "insert church name here" "insert good works here" slots. /Bevin Quote
Dr. Shane Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 What most elected officials know about the Adventist church is our stand for religious liberty. I believe Hillary was the guest speaker at a Religious Liberty event. Liberty Magazine is sent to many politicians and it distinguishes us from the "Religious Right". Of course the current US Senate chaplin, Barry Black, and many politicians on Capital Hill are familar with him but that doubtfully means they know much about the Adventist church. Bush is not up for re-election so it is not likely he was congratulating us for political gain. However it is quite likely someone else wrote his speech for him. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Administrators Gail Posted January 20, 2007 Author Administrators Posted January 20, 2007 I don't think that the higher-ups in government are ignorant of Adventists (Barry Black, etc). Last year at our singles retreat we hosted Terry Johnsson, who served on the Presidential Honor Guard under 4 presidents. He relates his experience as a positive one as far as relating as a Seventh-Day Adventist goes. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Woody Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Yes ... Terry Johnson has a great story. I have heard him and have read his book. But, his story is not what generally happens in the high parts of government. I would venture to say that Hilary and Bush have had little contact with any SDAs and certainly could not articulate much on their own. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Administrators Gail Posted January 20, 2007 Author Administrators Posted January 20, 2007 I don't know if I can say that any of our experiences in the SDA church follows the general pattern... But- I do thank God for the cracks, the windows of opportunity, that can happen anywhere. We can pray that even in the highest levels of government some might be won to Christ through a positive encounter Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Woody Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 I will give more that just one thumbs up ... I will give Three Thumbs Up for our Christian President George W. Bush. He is a man of God. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

They were just reading what they were told to read. I don't believe either one sounded more sincere than the other. They are both just after support for their political causes. Actually as governor GWB had a sincere, committed SDA on his staff and I understand she went to Washington with his staff. Likewise, I have heard that Hilary has had personal contacts with members of the Adventist church. I have no idea what they really know about us, but perhaps some of their exposure was positive.
