👯‍♀️ We're having fewer twins

A line chart displaying the U.S. twin birth rate from 2015 to 2024, measured in twin births per 1,000 total births. The rate declined from approximately 33.5 in 2015 to 30.1 in 2024, with a noticeable drop occurring around 2019.
Data: CDC. Chart: Brad Jennings/Axios

Over the past decade, the rate of twin births has declined in the U.S., Axios' Carly Mallenbaum (a twin!) writes.

  • Early use of IVF contributed to a twin baby boom. But as fertility treatments advanced, doctors increasingly recommended transferring a single embryo to reduce pregnancy risks.

Fraternal twins can result when two embryos are transferred during IVF or when a woman releases two eggs in the same cycle, which becomes more common with age.
