Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 4, 2007 Members Posted February 4, 2007 I've been wondering about the Bible being spoken of as the Word of God. Lots of people, especially (I've noticed) those of the *name it and claim it* bunch, refer to the *Bible* as the Word. *Read the Word* *Study the Word* *Spread the Word* Doesn't the New Testament state that the *Word* is part of the armor of the Christian? (sorry - I can't find the text...) And James 1:22 says Quote: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what is says.23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at this face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently in the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does. Since the New Testament was not compiled when the *Word* is spoken of in the NT, then does it refer to Christ, as stated in John 1:1? Or is the Old Testament what is meant when the Bible (NT) says to read and study the Word? Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
David Koot Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Interesting question, Pam. Hadn't that of that, ever!!!! I believe it is referring to the OT, which are also spoken of as the Holy Scriptures. By the way, I like your little motto on the bottom of your post--"comes the moment to decide" I think there is a song that has those words, "Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide . . ." Is that where those words come from? Quote
Administrators Gail Posted February 4, 2007 Administrators Posted February 4, 2007 When you mentioned the OT as being the "Word" of that day and whether that was what was studied, I thought of the part in Luke where Jesus was talking to the two fellows walking to Emmaus. Luke 24:25- Then he said unto them, O, fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26- Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27- And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Jesus taught them about Himself using the Old Testament. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

" 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. " Eph.6:13 The Spirit is the "breath" of God. In Hebrew the same word, (ruach, I think) means breath and spirit. The Spirit/Breath of God was hovering above the waters. NIV God 'spoke' what-is into existence, according to Genesis, God 'breathed' into man and he came to life. Mankind is the "temple of the Holy Spirit", the Holy Breath. Quote dAb O frabjous day! Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 5, 2007 Author Members Posted February 5, 2007 Ahh.. thanks for the text about the word of God being part of the armor. But that says the *sword* of the spirit is the word of God. What IS the word of God??? Aliensanctuary Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Quote: Once to Every Man and Nation This is a very powerful hymn. The hymnbooks don't have all of the verses, and combine a few of them. The longer poem, by James Russell Lowell, can be found in a public library, which is where my oldest daughter found it when she was a teenager. Of course, the internet did not exist at that time. What IS the Word of God? Now that's something to think about... We only have a few clues, in a few hundred pages, of what's really out there. We have some snapshots, and a few terse descriptions of something so amazing, something so far from our primitive concept of "heaven" and "religion" that when we actually see it, it will be a shocker. THe Kingdom of God is not what we think it is. Quote The Parable of the Lamb and the Pigpen https://www.createspace.com/3401451
Toni Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 If Jesus taught about Himself using the OT, then did the New Testament authors teach about Christ using the OT, or did they teach using the life of Jesus? The Bible readings that we had for our lessons this morning were from Acts, and I love the NIrV Discoverer's Bible that we use for the kids, it gives a reference after each of the OT quotes that are used (there may be other Bibles that do this, but none of my other Bibles do, so I thought it was really neat!). In just Acts 2, large parts of both Joel and Psalm were quoted by Peter, in chapter 3 Deuteronomy and Genesis are quoted. Chapter 4 verse 11 says, "Scripture says that Jesus is 'the stone you builders did not accept. But is has become the most important stone of all.'" That was from Psalm 118:22. Isn't that cool? :-) Quote Toni

I would say both, as there are LOTS of quotes from the OT in the New Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
LifeHiscost Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Maybe these couple of "words" will make it more plain. "Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." James 1:27 NASB "...nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you." Luke 17:20 NKJV “For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it... therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days..." Deut 30:11-14,19,20 NASB Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
