Moderators Nan Posted March 11, 2007 Moderators Posted March 11, 2007 Redwood, you are very welcome. And Don, yes Marmite is essential for the broth in which to boil the home made gluten. ( I seem to have developed an intolerance to gluten in recent years but NOT to the Marmite!). Quote
Moderators lazarus Posted March 11, 2007 Moderators Posted March 11, 2007 . . . but I still have mine, sitting on the shelf, forlorn and unused. It is a bit strong. Cheers. Beryl Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Sure, the label says Marmite but you haven't got the REAL AUSSIE STUFF!! Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.
Beryl Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Why won't this post ALL of my post? Just because I added "you haven't got the real Aussie stuff", it has thrown a tantrum! Oh, well, maybe this will go through! Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.
Moderators lazarus Posted March 20, 2007 Moderators Posted March 20, 2007 I always try to believe the best about the different peoples in the world but I really find it hard to believe that Aussie marmite can really any more edible than UK marmite. If it was in any way tasty it would just not be marmite. marmite's appeal to the small minority of humans who consume it is because of its nasty taste. If it tastes nasty it must be healthy! There's nothing that can be added to marmite that can make it palatable to the cultured........pallate. I think Beryl, If you're honest with your inner taste buds, you would have to admit that marmite is a gastronomic obscenity! David Koot Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 Indeed. When one thinks of the ingredients--'used' brewer's yeast which has been 'used' to make beer, as I recall--one can only wonder HOW a person could develop a 'taste' for such a 'gastronomic obscenity.' Leave it to the Brits! After all, the Marmite Food Company WAS founded in 1902, in Burton on Trent. Apparently, the Aussie version is an imitation! What WILL they think of next! Quote
Moderators Nan Posted March 20, 2007 Moderators Posted March 20, 2007 The Aussie version is an SDA production, by the Sanitarium Health Food Company. It is not the same as the British version, has all sorts of uses, and if you cannot appreciate it, that is your loss . We do not need converts, we know we like it! As a 2 year old I was caught eating it by the spoonful. It is used on toast, sandwiches, to flavour soups and stews, and my father even made something called 'Marmite Icecream' but that is a whole nother story ) Quote
David Koot Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 The Aussie version is an SDA production, by the Sanitarium Health Food Company. It is not the same as the British version Ahh, then that must explain the difference. SURELY the Sanitarium would not make Marmite from USED brewer's yeast, which had been USED to brew beer!!!! No doubt, that would explain the difference in flavor as well. I wonder if, in fact, the Aussie version relies on torumel yeast, which has a more pleasing flavor? In fact, my mother used to pack yeast sandwiches in our lunches for school! Perhaps something like Marmite?? They were healthful enough, no doubt, but not good for exchanging with other kids' sandwiches!! NO takers there! Quote
Taylor Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 hahaha David and did you grow up putting nutritional yeast on top of food like rice and beans? My parents did. Quote
Moderators Nan Posted March 20, 2007 Moderators Posted March 20, 2007 David has almost certainly not read the "Anne" books by LM Montgomery. In one of them is discussed 'the race that knows Joseph' - those that did not 'know Joseph' just did not understand. I will just have to assume the same thing with those who cannot comprehend the delights and virtues of Marmite! Quote
David Koot Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 hahaha David and did you grow up putting nutritional yeast on top of food like rice and beans? My parents did. I sprinkled nutritional yeast on my breakfast cereal. I experienced the niacin rush, but found that doing it on a regular basis made me impatient and short-tempered!!! And, resulted in an upset stomach. So, that didn't last. Once in awhile, it is okay. I expect that I am sadly deficient in some vitamins. Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted March 20, 2007 Moderators Posted March 20, 2007 Actually, I think the Aussie Marmite has moved on from brewer's yeast now, but I remember as a kid travelling with my Dad to the brewery in the big Sanitarium tanker truck to pick up a load of yeast. It certainly smelled pretty gross at that point... but really, do we believe in guilt by association? It's not the little yeasts fault that people like to drink their excretions... they're just getting on with their lives. And after they've had a good run, Adventists will eat the extract of their corpses! Quote Truth is important
David Koot Posted March 20, 2007 Author Posted March 20, 2007 Eewwwwww, gross!!!!!!!! How shocking! So the Aussie version IS made from USED brewer's yeast. Disgusting! An Adventist institution, using the byproduct of brewing BEER! I take back what I said about the SDA Aussie version being better! Sounds like the same kind of thing the Brits did. Why couldn't someone do something similar with FRESH nutritional yeast, and make a pleasant spread? Quote
