Woody Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 In the news today it was reported that 200 Illegals were caught taking jobs as Janitors in a Michigan resort. These illegals were costing tax payers because they were not paying taxes. It was described as flagrant criminal behavior which has cost tax payers $18.6 million in tax revenues according to the indictment. According to Moskowitz the illegals will be deported. Moderators Bravus Posted February 23, 2007 Moderators Posted February 23, 2007 Mhhmm. Fair enough, I agree. But will the employers - the resort owners - be deported? Jailed? Fined? Slapped on the wrist? Or not even that? What's the whole story? I suspect you've already told it. Quote Truth is important
bevin Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 If the employers were the resort owners, then they would have the TIN's and be paying SS and other taxes. It is more likely the resort had hired a janitorial service, and that was a contracting agency, and the janitors were through them. In this case the resort would not be at fault. It is also possible the illegals had fake SS cards. These cards are absurdly simple to forge - like the old USA money bills, they lack even the most rudimentary security features. /Bevin Quote
Woody Posted February 23, 2007 Author Posted February 23, 2007 Bevin ... You were right.I looked it up. It was a Janitorial Service or contracting agency. And the resort was not at fault. The owners of the Janitorial service face federal fraud charges because of all this. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Bravus Posted February 24, 2007 Moderators Posted February 24, 2007 OK, fair enough. I suspect a certain amount of winking on the part of the resort owners, but winking is not a crime, yet... Hope the employers do get caught. Despite what people might think, I'm not a supporter of illegal immigration. But I just think it's the 'bottom end of the ladder' that gets all the penalties and all the blame. Even if SS cards are easily forged, it wouldn't take that much checking on the part of employers to detect these people. Let's face it, they hire them because they're cheap and scared and easy to keep in line. So when penalties fall on the workers and fail to fall on the employers, it's an example of institutionalised injustice. Quote Truth is important
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 If they're US citizens, they won't be deported, but they certainly should be arrested. They must have known they were hiring illegals, if they weren't paying withholding taxes on them. So they are just as much criminals, and even more in my opinion, as the illegal aliens they were employing. They should throw the book at them. I have two friends...one from China the other from Japan. It took over 3 years for them to become citizens. Both had to learn English and pass a test on American history. Yet when it comes to the Mexicans illegally coming over, our leaders turn a blind eye. That's practicing discrimination based of race. But we really know what the real issue is? Lot's of money for Corporate America! I don't fully blame the Mexicans....Yes, they are breaking the law, but since the law isn't enforced in their eyes they can't be breaking it. Really it's Washington and Corporate America who are causing all the problems! Why? Favoritism..... Robert Quote
Administrators Naomi Posted February 24, 2007 Administrators Posted February 24, 2007 This is a portion of a news article about only one hospital in the US who delivers babies. Parkland Hospital is in Dallas and the stats are for 2004, I am unable to locate current numbers but have been informed that the number of births increased by more than 1/3 in 2005, again in 2006. This may be off topic, but the pointis that someone has to come up with the dollars to pay for the services. If they are to work here, they need to contribute. Quote: More than 80 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland last year had Hispanic surnames. The hospital does not focus on whether these women are legal residents of the U.S. Federal law requires hospitals to care for any woman who shows up in labor. "We are the safety net hospital for Dallas County, and these folks are residents of our county," said Dr. Ron Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Parkland. The hospital spent almost $71 million to deliver the babies born there in 2004, with Dallas County taxpayers covering about 40 percent of the cost and federal and state funds making up the difference – and then some. Moderators Bravus Posted February 24, 2007 Moderators Posted February 24, 2007 Racism, plain and simple and unadorned and ugly. What this statement says is 'people with Hispanic names are sponging off the system'. More blaming of the victims of a broken system. Quote Truth is important

Dr. Shane Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Most illegals working in the US are paying taxes becuase they are working with illegal documents. Because these documents are illegal, they are not filing taxes at the end of the year and getting a refund. So that means they are paying in more than an American citizen doing the same job who would be getting a tax refund at the end of the year. The Bush Administration understand that corporate America is hiring illegals because there are not enough Americans to fill the jobs. I suspect that is why this administration does not prosecute corporate violators like they could. Bush supports work visas to fill this demand. The solution is three-fold. 1. Stop the flow of illegals across the border. This means more border patrol and fencing certain areas. 2. Start a work-visa program. This would allow immigrants to come in for a three-year period of time to work. They would have to pass a health and criminal background screening. 3. Punish employers that violate the law. Woody Posted February 25, 2007 Author Posted February 25, 2007 The paper indicated that these illegals were getting paid cash under the table. No taxes were being paid. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Dr. Shane Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Taxes still get paid. Let me explain. Say I am a cleaning business owner and my business grosses $150,000 in a year. I have two employees that earn $20,000. So my payroll is $40,000/year. I use $25,000 worth of cleaning supplies, fuel and other operating expenses. I pay myself $60,000. That leaves a profit of $25,000 for the company. The company must pay taxes on that profit and I must pay taxes on my salary. Now lets say instead of paying my employees $20,000 each, I hire two illegals and pay them only $15,000 each. Since they are undocumented I would not be able to deduct their salaries as an expense. That would mean my company profit would now show at $65,000, my salary would show $120,000 or the additional $40,000 would be split between the two. Either way it would be taxed at a higher rate than it would be if two legal workers earning it. Does that make sense? Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
