Oregon's last World War I veteran dies

February 24, 2007

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon's last living World War I veteran, Howard Ramsey, has died in his sleep at age 108. Ramsey had been in an assisted living center in southeast Portland.

One of his two granddaughters, Sandra Linnell, said he spoke of his service with pride. Ramsey, a corporal, was a truck driver in France who ferried officers, carried water to troops on the front lines and returned the bodies of soldiers killed in battle.

His granddaughter said he got the job because he knew how to drive at a time when many people did not.

He enlisted in 1916 and returned to the Portland area in about 1920.

He was prominently mentioned in a speech in 2005 by Vice President Dick Cheney marking the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Veteran's Administration.
