Dr. Shane Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 I got a new job this week and owe it all to God. A few years ago I was laid off and quickly accepted a job for a company I had heard a lot of bad things about. When I accepted the job my boss's brother had just quit working for him and I was kind of filling in that space. Well last May his brother came back but to work in a different capacity. No major conflict in roles. However it is a Hispanic-owned company and this brother has never been shy about his hatred for white people. I am not exaggerating. He has stated that if he had still worked for the company I would have never been hired because he only looks out for his own people. He frequently threatened to fire me when I disagreed with him. Things had been progressively getting worse over the past few months so I have started looking for another job. Although I have had reservations about the academics and legalism in Adventist schools, I told God that if it was He provided me with a new job, I would send my children to church school. Well, he not only provided me with a new job, it comes with an increase in pay that will more than cover the cost of tuition for church school. No there was a little conflict. My ex-boss was known as being ruthless and hard. I had seen him fire people and he bragged about not caring about anyone's feelings except his wife's. Last week he asked me if I was looking for another job and I dodged his questions in order to misled him to believe I was not. However I was so shifty in my answers I figured he walked away not believing me. Once I was offered the position, I told him the next day and offered to stay on for another two and a half weeks to help ease the transition. He blew up, flew off the handle and told me to leave. Today when I picked up my check I was told he would never give me a good recommendation because I lied to him. They even told me they were happy with my performance but because I lied to them they would never tell anyone that. I told them the reason I misled them was because I hadn't been offered a job, because of the Sabbath-issue I had reason to believe I wouldn't be offered a job and feared I would be fired for looking for another job. Furthermore, I told them, my "lie" didn't change anything. They didn't do anything different as a result, nor did I. So while I am happy I have a new job, I hate leaving the last one like that. I have never left a job on bad terms but I am not sure anything I would have done would have made a difference. I am 90% sure that had I told them I was looking for a job, they would have fired me (and my secretary there agrees with that). They certainly were not going to ask me what it would take to keep me on. I think it has to do a lot with the machismo that so many males, especially Hispanics, struggle with. Dr. Shane Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Tomorrow I am headed up to Victoria, Texas for two or three days to fill out all the paperwork, take a physical, get set up with a computer, fax machine, etc and get some training about how the company does various administrative things. They told me to bring my wife and kids with me so we are all packed and ready to leave at about 5:30am. I may not be checking in here until we get back. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Dr. Shane Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 I am back now. I have a lot to organize and get doing. It really is the job of my dreams. It is more than I could have ever thought to ask for. God is abundantly good to me, much more than I am deserving of. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
