So...let's have a game called "Who's the Heathen?" Those who say they preach the gospel that Jesus taught can be the panel members. Among the contestants will be *heathens* chosen by those who seem to be able to discern such disgusting humans. **cough** The rest of the forum can be the audience. The prize can be chosen from Door #1, Door #2, or Door #3. The prizes will vary from a set of EGW books, listening to a sermon by your favorite preacher, or a short course in heathenology.

Sounds like something parents/teachers did when we were kids...

Forced apologies tend toward meaninglessness anyway.

I'm glad you used the word "tend' Clio. It does seem to depend on how much pride one has. When quite young my Dad forced me and my brother back to the scene of the "crime" and forced us to apologize for something we never would have done on our own. While it didn't seem to do much good at the time, beyond satisfying my Dad's sense of right, in later years it made it much easier to realize we weren't going to self destruct if we admitted we were wrong.

I wonder if our Heavenly Father doesn't sometimes force us into situations where we at last see our pathetic stiff neck attitude towards others, bringing us (maybe) abashedly to reconciliation.

" Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison." Matthew 5:23-25 NKJV

"So from now on, we do not think about what people are like by looking at them. We even thought about Christ that way one time. But we do not think of Him that way anymore. For if a man belongs to Christ, he is a new person. The old life is gone. New life has begun. All this comes from God. He is the One Who brought us to Himself when we hated Him. He did this through Christ. Then He gave us the work of bringing others to Him." 2 Corinthians 5:16-18 NLV

Maybe some biblical scribes who were writing down the scripture got the word wrong. Instead of becoming more like God, we are to become more like dogs. They never require an apology. They love you no matter what you do or say.

Someone once said to me, explanations are very seldom needed by your friends. And your enemies don't believe them anyway.

OTOH, explanations aren't really apologies, I think. They're just meant to tell why we had a good reason for doing what another thinks is wrong.

It is very important to go through this to gain understanding of how the other thinks. It is actually more valuable than apologizes. Many times hurt comes from good intentions. But the other person does not realize the good intentions. We need to spend the time to understand how the other thinks. This is healing for both sides. And it helps prevent problems from happening again.

Indeed. That type of approach--sarcasm--is scary. Imagine what it would be like to be faced with that on a daily basis? That is something I have considered when getting to know individuals. If they treat others with sarcasm, then, I conclude, my turn will come! Wouldn't want to be subjected to that.

Indeed, if you see someone who is sarcastic or unkind...beware as you may be next.

The other thing to consider is that sarcasm and unkindness is often a coverup for insecurities or pain of some sort and maybe they truely need a friend.

I'm glad you brought our attention to that fact, brother, for one of the ways Jesus brings peace to His child's heart is to reveal where the individual is with whom they are confronted. Just as fear is the basic foundation to the anger in the heart of man, so sarcasm is a kissing cousin of ridicule and anger.

The Christian's defense....? the full armor of God.

"This you know, my beloved brethren But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;

for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God." James 1:19,20 NASB

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

2 Timothy 1:7 KJV

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love." 1 John 4:18 NASB

I guess that last one pretty well covers all of us at any given moment. :)
