Neil D Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Dave and John et al who are thinking on answer the above question....., Ok, I know the bible is the standard, but of what? behavior? Life? God's will? Doctrines? What good are these things? We all know that, of themselves, they do not produce the thing we want most... If the end result of the bible is Character, [which will throw a big monkey wrench in many a conservative person's thinking and maybe strain the brain], then the standard is Love. That means the bible is showing us how to love.... And what better method of loving than to nuture, which all women are especially gifted in doing....... I know that there is this...doctrine/God's will/primative Godliness thingy...but I have seen more fights over what that is to the nth degree ...and how does that show God's love? Sorry, I look at things somewhat skewed....or maybe it has always been crooked, and I am looking at it straight.....? Moderators John317 Posted December 29, 2007 Moderators Posted December 29, 2007 ...I'll take a whack at trying to answer your question--although not as a conservative or a liberal, but for myself. Simply this . . . I don't make or recognize a distinction as far as what the Bible says. I believe the Bible tells us God's will, and that ALL of that is important. A big part of that, I believe, is understanding how the Bible's teachings apply today. Without a doubt, much of what the Bible records has cultural aspects. Cultures change. Part of Bible study is understanding what are timeless principles, and what was cultural in those times--and, what lessons may be glean from those cultural aspects, to apply in our own cultural situations. So, in summary, I recognize and accept all Scripture as inspired by God and needing to be followed. Following Scripture, for me, means understanding the meaning, the principles, the relevance and application to my particular situation.... Would you care to show us how you apply this to 1 Cor. 14: 33-36 or maybe to 1 Cor. 6: 9-10? Perhaps just the principle of the Sabbath should be obeyed-- i.e., one in seven-- and not the "letter". After all, isn't one proof of the Christian's liberty that the church can decide what day of the week to keep holy for God? Don't SDAs prove that they lack spiritual maturity when they argue that at Christ's return, God will not save Christians who don't go to church during a particular 24-hour period? If I'm a gay Christian and I love Christ with all my heart, is it really true that our loving God would destroy me if I am living in a monogamous relationship with someone who just happens to be a male? Is God honestly all that particular about His law? Doesn't the New Testament teach that love is the fulfillment of the law? So if I have love.... what does the "letter" matter? Regards, "John 3: 17" Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
LifeHiscost Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Yeah ... I don't EVER want someone to have me pegged. That would not be truth ... for I don't even have myself pegged. I keep changing. I'm surprised at you, Redwood. I thought you were another one not like others. "The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican." Luke 18:11 KJV Just jokin'. "And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away, because it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED.' "Even though all may fall away, yet I will not." Mark 14:27,29 NASB Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 The progressive (or liberal) person is generally anxious for change. This can be good. This can also be bad. The conservative person faces a changing world by utilizing things that have worked in the past--call it frame of reference. This can be good. This can also be bad. Let's use a journey to illustrate: The liberal person looks at the map and responds "Is that all the farther we have gotten!!?" Then they step on the gas to add distance between their point of origin and present location. The conservative person looks back and says "Hey, some important things fell off of our car. Let's go retrieve them." oG An astute observation. Taking the word "astute" to mean "shrewd", that fits right into Jesus' advice. "Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." Matthew 10:16 KJV Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Following Scripture, for me, means understanding the meaning, the principles, the relevance and application to my particular situation. Dave I'd say, by and large, I subscribe to those ideas. OTOH, perhaps I've gone somewhat liberal in accepting one of the more recent translation's definitive difference of application to a long held belief. "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; " 2 Timothy 3:16 NASB "For all scripture inspired of God is profitable to teach, to reprove, to chastise, [for] to learn in rightwiseness, " 2 Tim 3:16 WYC The word 'is', I believe, is not included in the oldest manuscripts, but is added at a later time for the perception of clarifying. Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 So if I have love.... what does the "letter" matter? Regards, "John 3: 17" I'm assuming that would be at least partially qualified by these statements for the body of Christ. "Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:" Acts 10:34 KJV " Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28 KJV Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!

Taylor Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Well...for one...ways of looking at things, reading Neil's questions has given me some insight into some questions that people do wonder about. I don't know.... I am sure I will have a deeper answere later. Quote
Woody Posted January 1, 2008 Author Posted January 1, 2008 You are exactly right. I do love the probing questions that Neil has. We have to be challenged and Neil does a great job of that. Otherwise ... we would just continue in the old rut of thinking. Some times we miss things unless we have "fresh" questions. Very good. Continue on fellows.
