I haven't looked up that one ... but I was wondering if that was the reason that our titles disappeared. I want my "Swiss and Swedish American" title back. In their early days they were not even keen on titles like "Mr", "Mrs", etc, and would simply refer to each other as John Smith or on a first name basis. I must say I don't like titles. I get uncomfortable when patients call me "Dr Jones" and I much prefer to be addressed by my first name. And when someone says Mrs Lee I have to really try to work out who they are talking about (as I still use my maiden name!). When one of the Drs at the hospital is away, they will put on the board "Dr X covering Dr Y till further notice" When I am away, they say " 'Nan' away, Dr K covering". I hope that reflects the good relationship I have with midwives.:) Quote

One exception is from kids: I know we're all egalitarian now and so on, but a Christian parenting class we attended when the kids were small suggested that calling adults 'Mr X' and 'Mrs Y' is an appropriate sign of respect from children, and also gives them a 'rite of passage' into adulthood when they begin using adults' first names. That makes sense to me. And if I ever go back to teaching high school, I'll have them call me Dr Geelan rather than Mr Geelan, because I worked hard for my PhD, and also because it helps give me some extra 'cred' as a science teacher. I think the formality of 'Brother' and 'Sister' has perhaps been so often used to veil hostility that to me they now sound hostile rather than respectful, hence the preference for first names.
