This is how it works (in my example the Republican will be the villain but both parties are guilty of this.) A Republican supporter (not the candidate) makes a false accusation. The Democrat candidate is outraged (or their supporters are). The Republican candidate allows the media to cover all the outrage for a couple of days. Then IN AN ACT TO KEEP THE STORY IN THE NEWS, the Republican candidate denounces the false accusation. Even when an accusation is false, and EVERYBODY knows it is false, it still does damage as long as it is in the news. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
