I really love the Adventist culture. Being vegetarian is part of the Adventist culture that I really enjoy. Within Adventist circles not everyone eats the same. And there are some diet police preacher that think everyone should eat like them. That is not the intent of this thread. There are many different types of vegetarian in the church and I take no issue with anyone - not even the meat eaters. Diet shouldn't be a burden ballchain and we certainly shouldn't beat each other up over it pillowfight

It might be in your neck of the woods ... but I think the latest stats say that the majority of SDAs are NOT vegetarians.

I thought I could never do it as I LOVE fish, and I was FURIOUS to find that they discontinued Loma Linda Ocean Platter! gah Does anyone know of a similar product?????

My parents and my sister give me heck of a hard time for it. ahahaha. When I go out to eat with my sister she taunts me with a piece of chicken saying "Come on, I won't tell anyone! I know you want to". :)

In the USA about 50% of Adventists are vegetarian BUT that is using the lacto-octo or vegan labels. When we add the "semi" and "almost" labels, I am sure that number increases.

In Latin America and Africa (where most Adventists live) vegetarians are a small minority. My guess would be 10% - 20%.

Right now I'm between being a began and a vegetarian. I have heard that even dairy products are harmful, and have cut way back.

Mostly vegan because my body had developed an intollerance for dairy.

It is interesting that you used the word intolerance. I believe that is the same word that Ellen White used for going without meat. She had an intolerance for going with out it and she readily admitted it.

Lacto-octo: Did you perhaps mean Lacto-ovo--one how eats dairy and eggs.

The "Octo" in lacto-octo means the numeral eight.

Yes, that was a struggle for her, but in all of my study on the subject, there were only a couple of times when she was travelling and nothing else was available, that she ate some meat. She did not insist on others in her household taking her stand.

I cook vegan, and find its not difficult to stay vegan when eating out. I dont ask at other peoples homes whether what they serve is vegan or not. Same for potlucks. I think in todays world, if you are interested in health at all you can see why its advantageous to be vegan, or at least vegetarian. Listen to the news!!!!

Our results so far are showing that 82% consider themselves some type of vegetarian.

It is interesting now that currently the poll shows that 50% are some kind of meat eaters.

In my case, I am forced due to circumstances beyond my control to be a meat eater on occassion...would prefer to be veggie all the way.....

I like pitching a big tent. I really don't like the idea of people looking down their noses at others and telling them they are not a "real" vegetarian because they eat meat occasionally or because they eat fish. Health reform is progressive. Each has their own path. I was born into a meat-eating family. I then became lacto-ovo, then a vegan, then went back to lact-ovo and now am a semi-vegetarian.

It does seem our poll here is showing 50% to be vegan or lacto-ovo (which is what official Adventist studies show for North America) However when we add the categories of "semi" and "almost" we see that number jump up closer to 80%. Certainly that shows something positive about the vegetarian culture within Adventism.

OR ... Perhaps it shows that many of us are just poor and can't afford as much meat as we would like.
