fccool Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 Nop, he did not. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/10/showless-joe-mc.html He's too busy signing the book and record deals from the people who are jumping on this political celebrity bandwagon. fccool Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 "Fake News Gets It Right" ? Wow! Why watch the news when we have SNL and The Daily Show? I like Jon Stewart, because the comedic aproach let's him point out things that other newscasters don't do. He cracks down on much of the political hypocrisy. I think it's valuable to show it to people. He does not discriminate either when it comes to laughing at people. Quote
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted October 30, 2008 Administrators Posted October 30, 2008 "Fake News Gets It Right" ? Wow! Why watch the news when we have ... The Daily Show? Don't be so hasty to diminsh its significance and impact: Quote: Television ratings show that the program generally has 1.45 to 1.6 million viewers nightly, a high figure for cable television... During the 2004 U.S. presidential election, the show received more male viewers in the 18-34 year old age demographic than Nightline, Meet the Press, Hannity & Colmes and all of the evening news broadcasts. Because of this, commentators such as Howard Dean posit that Stewart serves as a real source of news for young people, regardless of his intentions. Nightline anchor Ted Koppel has said that "A lot of television viewers—more, quite frankly, than I'm comfortable with—get their news from the Comedy Channel on a program called The Daily Show." * * * In late 2004, the National Annenberg Election Survey at the University of Pennsylvania ran a study of American television viewers and found that fans of The Daily Show had a more accurate idea of the facts behind the 2004 presidential election than most others, including those who primarily got their news through the national network evening newscasts and through reading newspapers.... A more recent survey, released by the Pew Research Center on April 15, 2007, indicates that regular viewers of The Daily Show tend to be more knowledgeable about news than audiences of other news sources. Approximately 54% of The Daily Show viewers scored in the high knowledge range, followed by Jim Lehrer's program at 53% and Bill O'Reilly's program at 51%, significantly higher than the 34% of network morning show viewers... The Project for Excellence in Journalism released a content analysis report suggesting that The Daily Show comes close to providing the complete daily news. A 2006 study published by Indiana University tried to compare the substantive amount of information of The Daily Show against prime time network news broadcasts, and concluded that when it comes to substance, there is little difference between The Daily Show and other news outlets. The study contended that, since both programs are more focused on the nature of "infotainment" and ratings than on the dissemination of information, both are broadly "equal" in terms of the amount of substantial news coverage they offer. - Wikipedia Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." Dr. Shane Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Thing is, there's good recent research showing that many young people *do* get much of their news coverage from the Daily Show. So, like it or not, it will be a significant factor in this election. 20% of eligible voters between 18 and 24 years old actually go to the polls and vote. That is less than half of the ones that are actually registered to vote. Since it is not a demographic that votes as a block, they are not a significant factor. The black community is about 13% of the population and is a more significant factor than the youth vote is. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Moderators Bravus Posted October 31, 2008 Author Moderators Posted October 31, 2008 It'll be different this time, I confidently predict. Quote Truth is important
Dr. Shane Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 I have seen that confident prediction every Presidential election since I first voted in 1988. I think the highest turn out for that demographic has been 24%. Most of the time it is slightly under 20%. Most Americans in general are not news junkies, like those of us participating in this forum. Regular season football games often get higher ratings than Presidential debates. This uninterested factor is multiplied within the youth. There is a reason that politicians pander to demographic groups like senior citizens, gun owners, gay activists and racial minorities. It is because these groups turn out in high numbers to vote OR they vote as a block. The youth group does neither. If comedy programs do anything for the youth, they convince them not to take the political process serious and thus end up discouraging them from voting. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted October 31, 2008 Administrators Posted October 31, 2008 Read more carefully, Shane. The survey shows that Daily Show viewers are generally better informed and more knowledgable about the news and issues. One of the parts I left out, was John Stewart's own serious comments about the show where he indicates that as being a major assumption of the show. THe viewers are better informed and more aware of the real news, or they wouldn't get the humor of it all. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
Dr. Shane Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 First, I didn't say the viewers are uniformed. I said that only people that have shallow minds are going to be influenced by comedy. A person can be well-informed and still have a shallow mind. A person can also be uniformed and be one that thinks things through. Those that are uniformed do not grasp the humor in political jokes. When I was 21 I took my date, an 18 year old girl, to a Jay Leno performance. I didn't stop laughing from the time it started to the time it ended. I don't think she chuckled but perhaps a few times. She was a typical person of her age. Her concerns in life were more superficial and politics simple didn't interest her. As a result, Jay Leno wasn't that funny. While those that are well informed will find political humor entertaining, few decide who to vote for based on an SNL skit, Jay Leno or John Stewart. Chris Matthews, Larry King and Bill O'Reilly have real influence with voters to whereas comedians are just funny. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... fccool Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Yet, Jon Stewart's introspective is very valuable IMO. He can get away with much more when commenting on certain events, and pointing out the absurdity. It's not simply making fun for the sake of fun... such as SNL fake news. Stewart does not make anything up. He simply puts a comedic spin on things and exposes certain things the media are not willing to touch on. McCain has been on both, daily show and Colbert Report quite a bit, so I think it is serious enough for politicians to consider engaging in. Shows like O'Reilly/Olberman/Limbaw are a one way highway in a land of political punditry... these are one man's opinion which cuts off the microphones of the dissidents. It's not in any way informing. To be adequately informed you have to approach the argument from every angle and let the viewer make a decision. I think that Daily Show does that well. enough to be called a news show. Of course it is a narrow information channel, but nevertheless it is one. Quote
Dr. Shane Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Quote: McCain has been on both, daily show and Colbert Report quite a bit, so I think it is serious enough for politicians to consider engaging in. McCain will be on SNL tomorrow night. That doesn't mean he thinks people should take it seriously. Quote: Shows like O'Reilly/Olberman/Limbaugh are a one way highway in a land of political punditry... Those shows are not all in the same category. O'Reilly invites guests on his program that disagree with him, Sometimes he shouts at them but they get their opinions out. Limbaugh rarely has guests and chooses his callers (by his own admission) by choosing those that make him look good. I don't get MSNBC so have never been able to watch Olberman to make much of a judgment call on him. I know he wants to be the liberal O'Reilly but don't know if he has high-profile, conservative guests on his program to balance his own liberal views. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... fccool Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Here's one of the reasons I do like Daily Show and Jon Stewart. fccool Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Or even stuff like this... you are not going to find news organizations discussing this.
