bygjymbo Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Easton's Bible Dictionary's defines familiar Spirit as: Quote: Sorcerers or necormancers, who professed to call up the dead to answer questions, were said to have a "familiar spirit" ... The word "familiar" is from the Latin familiaris, meaning a "household servant," and was intended to express the idea that sorcerers had spirits as their servants ready to obey their commands. Fred Flintstone was a witch. He had a familiar spirit called "The Great Gazoo" that only he and his friend Barney could see. Gazoo had magical powers and was forced to do their bidding. Fred and Barney also belonged to a Masonic-like organization called "The Royal Order of the Water Buffalo. .......................................... On local TV on Saturday morning, it seems like ALL the cartoons have a supernatural theme. There's "Trolls", about teenage dolls who perform ceremonies with charms and amulets that give them powers. There's "Care Bears" who each have a different power (according to the insignia on thier bellies) to impart their will on others. Sabrina the Teenage Witch...obviously occult oriented. "Critter Gitters" is about a professor and his group of children who rescue animals and their associates from make-believe, high-drama situations. One episode involved a "ghost-dog". The ending of the story PROVED it's existance. How about "The Dead Zone", about a guy who can see the future. or "Charmed", about a coven of witches, or "Buffy" who battles vampires or "Smallville" that's full of supernatural occurences. "Situation comedies" are nothing more than a group of ridiculous characters involved in a series of lies and deceit. ....................................................... If you open your eyes, even a little, you can see how far "principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spitual wickedness in high places" have influenced society and entered our very homes. They started with us, as children, and continue to indoctrinate our children. How and why do we let this happen? Who are these program directors and sponsors and studio executives who pollute minds to earn a profit? Can we trust ANYTHING that these vile men broadcast? Quote
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted November 26, 2008 Members Posted November 26, 2008 I *like* the Flintstones. Fred Flintstone was not a witch. The Royal Order of the Water Buffalo might as well be the Elks Club or some other philanthropic society of today. The Great Gazoo did not appear on the series until much later when other programs (such as Bewitched) came onto the scene of television - the producers were following the trend. And NO, that was not the right thing to do. And despite the Great Gazoo's appearance, I do not consider the Flintstones in the category of the occult. It is not what led me into witchcraft. **snort** NOTE: I am only commenting on "The Flintstones." Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Doug Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 "Situation comedies" are nothing more than a group of ridiculous characters involved in a series of lies and deceit. Nearly all of the situations in sitcoms would be solved if people were honest. Quote
Guest Bruno Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 TV is the work of the devil. It deludes our minds, and takes us away from God. Nothing good can come of it. We must all throw out our TV's. I think BygJymbo has it right. There's NOTHING that we can trust that is conveyed on the airwaves (or today that would be cable lines, or satellite signals). Kill your TV! Oh, I don't mean "kill"; thou shalt not kill. Just get rid of it and replace it with a bible. Quote

There are very good shows out there on PBS, The History Channel, the Weather Channel, NOVA. Then how about 3ABN? Then there is the news. Most of the time it isn't always pleasant but ignoring it does not make it go away. Quote

Moderators Bravus Posted November 26, 2008 Moderators Posted November 26, 2008 While I agree with the idea of getting rid of your TV - we have never had one at our house - I worry about the 'demon behind every bush' approach. Whatever happened to 'whatsoever things...' and dwelling on what is beautiful and true, rather than sniffing out what is evil wherever we can? Quote Truth is important
bygjymbo Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 ...demon behind every bush' approach Why does pointing something out automatically make you a fanatic?? If someone told you that your house was on fire, would you call them a pyrophiliac? .......................................... Quote

Moderators Bravus Posted November 26, 2008 Moderators Posted November 26, 2008 Thanks cricket. Yeah, jymbo, I wasn't saying 'fanatic' necessarily, just that obviously someone - maybe not you - has spent a fair bit of time searching out every occult reference in every TV program. To me that says they're focusing their energy on ferreting out the evil, rather than seeking the good, and to me that's an unhealthy way to live and spend energy. But to each his own. bygjymbo Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 It didn't take any time at all to comprise that list. And I truly watch very little TV. Thing is, it's so obvious that it slaps you in the face. Quote

Dr. Shane Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Well,,, it is hard to criticize a show with humans and dinosaurs cohabiting together. Especially when the dinosaurs are trained. I have discovered that Christian TV has so many good programs on it that there is little time to watch other programs. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Stan Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 The media is not evil, it is the choice of the messages people choose to watch/read/listen to. The printing press can have the same things, destroy all books as some are nasty. Woody Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 If we are going to talk about the virtues of TV ... I am on the side that says Pro Football and the Sunday Ticket on Direct TV is a must. I didn't fork out the extra hundred bucks to have it in HD ... but I am considering it. And Bravus ... my flat screen is on the wall but is not as big as the wall. carolaa Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I guess we won't have a TV in our house, either, as soon as they all go digital. No explosion necessary. Quote
Dr. Shane Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 If you have cable or satellite TV you will not be affected when the signal goes digital. That includes the 3ABN/Hope Dish. carolaa Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 That would be us. We don't watch enough TV to justify in our minds the cost of cable or satellite. I'm curious to see if we even notice it's gone. If so, we may get an adapter. Quote
Dr. Shane Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 The addition of a 3ABN/Hope dish is bound to enrich any Christian's spiritual life. There are some churches that buy the systems for new members. Those that don't have space for a dish can get the 3ABN/Hope IPTV system if they have high-speed internet. It really changed my spiritual life although it took me about a year to gain a real appreciation for it. BYW: the satellite dish has no monthly fees ever. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor...
