Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted January 10, 2009 Moderators Posted January 10, 2009 Looking over the lip of Half Dome in a little crevice on the lip and realizing I was on a decline with sand underneath my feet and it was 2000 feet straight down on some nasty looking rocks. I edged back SLOWLY and climbed back head first back into the crevice. I was 17. Not very smart then. Risk taker I was. Well, that reminds me... I actually climbed to the top of Half Dome a few years ago. Scary! And the trip back down was even scarier. Glad I did it then, because I sure wouldn't try it now. Yes climbing up Half Dome on those steps made of two by fours bolted to the rock face with a rope railing was scary. More so if you looked down at the valley floor. Something you could not help doing if you were coming down. I will not do that again. Once is enough. Quote Riverside CA

Ellen Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Boy, I don't think anything I have done qualifies as adventurous. I had so many plans to learn to fly and to white water and finish college. I did "elope" after 5 years of engagement - it doesn't sound adventurous, but at the time it was - there's a story to go with that, you can be sure. Quote

This is the lip of Half dome. Look along the rim just to the left of the far right man standing and one step down. Just below that you will see a dark spot like a cave. I believe it was just such a hole I crawled into from above and crawled out to look over the edge. It may have been that spot. I know it was on the lip where I did crawl out onto that ledge. http://www.donklosterman.com/Yosemite/y2065.jpg Quote Riverside CA
Beryl Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Back in 1948 at college, in a "missionary service" group of 4 (2 male, 2 female) 3 of us were dropped off at the spot we had a Kids' program. The 4th member came on his bike. The truck forgot to pick us up on the way back, but Bill had the solution -- one on the "parcel carrier" at the back, one on the cross bar, and one on the handle bar, with Bill doing the peddling, a journey of about 5 miles over an unsealed road. A ride I will never forget -- I was the "handle bar passenger!" -- and yes, it was scary fun! And we were reprimanded -- for such stupidity! Did they expect us to walk home?? Beryl Quote "Grace is God doing for us, in us and through us that which He requires of us but which is impossible for us to do in or for ourselves." But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9.
Lineman Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Like some of you have already said, what I did sometimes was not adventurous, but just plain stupid. I remember going to the top of Half Dome when I was a kid too. Coming down I thought I would be smart and take a short cut 'cause I knew that the trail made a lot of switch backs and I was bound to run into one. Never found the trail until I got to the river, but kept hoping that I would not run into a bear. Same Pathfinder trip, climed a cliff up about 40' without a rope and then looked down, realized that if I slipped there would be nothing to stop me until I hit the bottom. Chose to get down ASAP About the same period in life I climed on top of an old steel bridge and started walking across the top beam. Looked down into the river and saw that the water was only about 6" deep and realized that if a gust of wind came up I was going down. Crawled down right away. GreatLakesGramma Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Lineman, I'm glad you came to your senses on the cliff and bridge, and got down before it was too late.
