Amazon Kindle / Kindle 2 eBook

Personally, I think the only real disadvantage to owning one is the inflexibility of use. I like to write in my books (annotating and high-lighting text), and I often ear-mark pages of interest or import. This will become difficult to do with a digital book.

The Kindle website says:

Bookmarks and Annotations

By using the QWERTY keyboard, you can add annotations to text, just like you might write in the margins of a book. And because it is digital, you can edit, delete, and export your notes. Using the new 5-way controller, you can highlight and clip key passages and bookmark pages for future use. You'll never need to bookmark your last place in the book, because Kindle remembers for you and always opens to the last page you read.

My new Kindle 2 is en route and I expect delivery before 4/1. I am most excited and hope to provide a first person review some time this week.

What do I know so far?

> Amazon now has several versions of the Bible available. I use a Franklin KJV now and appreciate the search features but not the small screen.

> Amazon also has a growing list of SOP books, some for a crazy low price, like $1.99!

> The internet access exists to a limited degree, and does offer messaging/emails for $0.10 each

> There are now approx. 250,000 book available, some for free, most for cheap, with new releases at $9.95 and a 1-minute download. I intend to build a nice reference library, more than anything else.

> The K2 holds 1500 books!

I'll share my experiences as I learn.

Yes, please do that Les. I am interested in getting one if you have a good overall experience with it.

OK, Kids...

I received the Kindle 2 yesterday and here are my first takes:

>> My public apologies to Stan and the Forum. I ordered the K2 before Stan's post that the Forum receives a commission on units ordered through the link below. I would have gladly done that had I known.

>> The K2 arrived in way less time than Amazon's delivery forecast and comes with a dual-use cord, the plug that enters the K2 is the mini-USB plug and the other end of the cord is a standard 110v 2-prong plug for wall receptacles. The cool part is that the plug detaches from the cord and exposes a standard USB plug. This permits the K2 to be attached to a PC for file transfers (more on that later) and battery charging.

>> There is an indicator light that glows green when the charge is complete. It took about 75 minutes to reach a full charge out of the box. You may begin using the K2 while it is charging. Under normal use, the battery is supposed to last 1-2 weeks between charges. There is a battery level indicator in the display.

>> I began by reading the 'welcome' message on the K2 from the pres of Amazon. The text has 6 settings for the font size, so choosing a size to suit is easy. The fact that there is no back light in the display is not a problem. The display is very easy to read and I had no trouble getting used to it.

>> It took a very short time to get acclimated to the controls. The 'next page', 'previous page' and 'home' buttons are flush with the sides of the unit and, since I read the reviews, I was careful not to handle the K2 whereby I could accidentally press the buttons. I could see where they can be pressed when the reader (me) is not paying attention. The joystick is very handy and easy to use. It allows for movement of the cursor much like a tab key, once you have navigated to where you need to be, you simply press straight down on the joystick. There are times when pressing the 'enter' key is desirable for certain choices.

>> That brings me to the alpha-numeric QWERTY keyboard. I like it. The buttons first seem very small, but they are spaced far enough apart that I can type on it more easily than my BB Storm. When doing a search on the Kindle, the keyboard makes the job easy and fast.

>> I was quite interested in the free internet access that comes with the K2. It works! But there are drawbacks that you need to be aware of... The biggest is no color graphics. That, and many websites are are not formatted for the screen layout of the Kindle browser. That doesn't mean you cannot access them, but it means they do not look like what you will expect. I accessed my websites to test the graphics and features that I have on my pages. My Live Chat feature doesn't work on the K2 but you can navigate around the web by clicking the links as in any browser.

>> The search feature. That is a major deal for me as I love to research! Pressing the 'menu' button takes you to choices, not the least of them is 'search'. When you select that, you are taken to a page with a text bar for entry of your search string. Then (and here's the best part) you can choose from using that search string in 'My Items' (the books and periodicals you have downloaded), the 'Kindle Store' (for online purchases), 'Google' (yep, direct on the web), 'Dictionary' (included with the K2), Wikipedia (also direct on the web), and 'go to web', for a quick navigation to a URL address. In addition to these searches, while you are reading on the Kindle, you can highlight a word or phrase and initiate a search direct from the screen.

>> I set about purchasing 2 versions of the Bible and several books of SOP. The books are downloaded immediately into the Kindle. It literally takes 80 seconds or less to download a book. The 5 books I purchased total less than $30.00. Nearly $20 of that was just for the NIV and NKJV Bibles. I have room for 1495 more books, so I have a way to go. There are around 250,000 books to choose from, so I will have fun deciding my next purchases. I purchased The Great Controversy for $1.72.

>> If you are into periodicals and online blogs, you may purchase subscriptions to those. I think the prices are higher than they need to be, but the convenience may be worth the price. An example would be the USA Today at $11.99 a month. That's a terrific price for daily downloads... $144 a year compared to $190 for daily paper delivery, but downloading could be dirt cheap and still be profitable to Gannett.

My immediate first impression... worth the wait! This will be a tremendous tool, both now and in the future as more publishers 'get with it'. That's it for now. I'll entertain questions!

A larger Kindle could upend textbooks, periodicals

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/books/2009-05-05-kindle_N.htm?csp=15

Quote:
Amazon.com is widely expected to unveil a new Kindle electronic book device with a larger screen Wednesday, which would be geared for textbooks, magazines and newspapers and possibly shake up the economics of multiple industries at once.

The Seattle-based online retailer is not giving details about what it will announce at its press event at Pace University in New York, but the company has not disputed widespread reports that a larger Kindle is on tap. The most recent version of the Kindle was announced at New York's Morgan Library & Museum in February.

That Kindle, which costs $359 and can wirelessly download books to be read on its grayscale screen, already includes several features that could aid textbook reading, like the ability to highlight and bookmark passages. Users can tap the Kindle's typewriter-layout keyboard to look up words and annotate text.

Newspaper and magazine lovers can also buy subscriptions to publications that are wirelessly delivered to the device, too.

But the current device's screen, 6 inches on the diagonal, is more suited to paperback books than larger reading material.

If Amazon reveals a bigger device better suited for digital textbooks and periodicals, the rollout could help students get educational materials more cheaply and give newspapers and magazines a better way to sell digital versions of their content.

The kindle is probably a good thing, but I've reached my budget limit on gadgets.

I have a pocket pc pda thsat I bought in 2003. Back then pda were in. Now that same pda is outdated. it runs good, but it is basically obsolete. Still, it is preety good for reading and carrying ebooks. I don't think you can get 1400 on it, maybe a couple hundred at best. but it is compact, fits in my pocket.

with all that in mind, I won't be looking into getting a kindle.

I can see where the kindle would be good for students though.
