I don't like the word boast, because no matter what it is you are boasting about, it still makes it sound like you are tooting your own horn:

"Hey guys, I KNOW the Lord [unlike you guys]. That makes me SUPERIOR!"

I know that is not what it means, but it's the way that particular combination of words hits me.

Better to boast OF the Lord. Of WHAT I understand and know about Him. I think that is what the verse really means. But DGrimm's post made me think about how Scripture can be so misused as it is so often. That both good and bad boasting can come from the same verse, because of how someone interprets it.

SO is there good boasting as well as bad boasting????

Absolutely! That is what Jeremiah is talking about. Boast in the Lord!!! Maybe if more Adventists would boast about knowing the Lord we would have more Adventists. Many are afraid to boast because they might offend someone.

IF we could just boast in the generic sense of what God has done for us instead of feeling the need to make everyone SDAs vs. Christians .... we might have better success.

Just a thought.

Romans 10:13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

I don't think the message is the problem, it's the way it is often presented.

Do you wish that you didn't know the truth as it is taught in the Adventist church? Which truth would you like to have removed from your mind/heart? Do you think other people would rather have less truth as well? It is hard to know how and when to give people the truth. In fact I believe it is impossible to do without much prayer and much patience and even more love. Everybody is different and there is no 'one' way to do it.

I say how ever the Holy Spirit moves a person they need to obey. I see a lot of Hispanic believers telling the world what Jesus has done for them. They tell them in the work place, grocery store and over their next-door neighbor's fence. They are on fire for the Lord and not ashamed to tell people about the Sabbath.

I really don't like to sit in judgment on the way others testify and share their faith.

Personally .... I DO.

I see too many destructive abusive ways. At some point it has to be stopped when it is driving people away. As I have shared ... we bring our neighbor to church and church functions. Many a time ... we have had to do some fast talkin' to undo severe damage from some 'on fire' SDAs.

So ... unfortunately .... we do have to judge and see the damage.

Stan tells us to treat the new comers here kindly. Perhaps this would be similar. Maybe I will have to consider this and not provide any initiations.

Seriously ... we have to be gentle with new babes and nonbelievers. We neede to treat them differently.

Shane, telling everyone you meet what God has done for you is great. Telling them that God loves them and has the answer for their problems and questions is also good. But surely you have known somebody who's idea of witnessing is to go around pointing out other people's shortcomings or erroneous beliefs, and tell them they are headed for Hell if they don't change. Or even a somewhat milder version of that.

In the first instance you are sharing your own experience. That draws people's interest. In the second case, you are offering people a solution to their own inner longings. But in the third, you are insulting, offending, and immunizing them against the working of the Holy Spirit within their own hearts.

How you witness does matter.

Sometimes, it's true, God does impress someone to rebuke a specific sin in someone they know. That is rare, but if someone needs just that, God will inspire someone to do it, and convict the guilty one. But most of the time when people "witness" that way, it is in their own initiative, with self-righteous and legalistic motives. Then it is not the Holy Spirit inspiring them. It is a different spirit.

I am not sitting in judgment on the way others testify and share their faith. I'm describing what I used to think it meant to be a witness, before I was born again, and God began to teach me the right way to reach others for Him. And I know I was never alone in this kind of wrong thinking.

And if God ever made me fully aware of the results of my so-called witnessing, I would probably become very depressed.
