Joshua 1:8

Have the book of this Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may carefully keep everything that is written in it. Then you will prosper in your dealings, then you will have success.

Thanks.

What is a legalist? Legalism is self-righteousness.

Legalism is not obedience.

He wasn't saying that keeping the law would save you. Just that you will be successful if you obey God. Which is true.

Why do you think God gave the law? Was it something arbitrary just to make things hard for us? I think NOT!

God is a God of love. His law is love - all of it. He gave it to us in love, because He made us and He knows what is best for us. Jesus said that He came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. (John 10:10) That is what God has always wanted for us. And that is what the law is for - to show us the way to have that abundant life He wants so much for us. If we believe Him we will keep His commandments, because we trust that He knows best what will make us happy and fulfilled.

When we chose to go against His laws, we are telling Him that we know better than He does. And we also are telling Him to stay out of our lives, we want to run it our own way. It breaks His heart, especially to watch us suffer the consequences of our own choices, but He loves us so much that He respects our freedom to choose for ourselves, so He does that very hard thing for a loving Father to do, of letting us have our way, and receive what we have chosen.

God, through Moses, gave the Israel the Old Covenant. Does that mean that God has two methods for gaining heaven? No, the giving of the law was never as a means of salvation, but rather it was given to make mankind's situation hopeless so that they would seek the righteousness that comes by faith "in Christ Jesus".

Sure, but at the same time he says, "those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." That's the aim....

Yes... But...

Legalism is very different to Obedience...

We have been crucified with Christ, but we are also raised with Christ...

We're raised with Christ to greater heights...

To do His WILL...

Not our own WILL...

New life in Christ--now that is really awesome...

Legalism is simply "some form of obedience apart from faith whereby you suppose you are made right with God".

Because it is "apart from faith" it is therefore a "thought crime". The same outward act of honoring parents or rest on Sabbath can be "by-faith-alone obedience to the Gospel" OR "legalism" depending on the person.

When someone try to keep, to obey God's holy Law (e.g.: Keeping the Sabbath holy)....It is NOT unusual if there is also a choir to attack the person and sending a message: LEGALISM !!!

Yet if somone always in strickly keeping the laws or rules of any sports, businesses, cities, their jobs or any laws in traffics/highways...there must be also a choir sending a message:

GOOD PERSON

GOOD CITIZEN

What a liberal theology---> too fanatics in campaigning and teaching to obey every man-made laws/rules very strickly (yes, too fanatics) but unfortunately too easy to disrespect and loosen the necessity of obedience, and also too fast to attack and misrepresent someone's obedience of God's holy Law as LEGALISM.

Okey, time for playing basketball now. Please teach me how to become a legalist player.

God bless you and bless your obedience to any rules/laws of your job.

And may your boss not attacking your obedience as LEGALISM.

Legalism Is:

following man made rules instead of God given principles of living.

With that in mind, why is it that legalism is often attached to sabbath keeping, and not to Sunday worship, which is obviosly the result of man made rules?

Legalism is strict adherence to the law in order to gain heaven.

Self-righteousness is thinking that you are actually keeping the law.

So, the next time I am in a conflict with someone, and I refrain from killing them, am I am legalist? Or a law abiding christian? I think the latter.

Depends on which laws you want to follow, because in some cases, it looks like God says go ahead and kill 'em:

Exodus 32:27

Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side ... and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.

1 Samuel 15:2-3

Thus saith the Lord of hosts ... go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare him not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

I don't know your motive for not killing someone. Is it because you might go to jail (which is fear based and hence the wrong motive) or is it because you let the HS override your nature because you want to glorify God. If the latter, well, that's good, but in and of itself that's only a small part of the law.

The law is exceedingly broad and even takes the desires and motives into account. Basically the law requires no self-love, but instead agape love. Anything short of this is falling short of the law's requirements and hence you cannot be saved by your strict obedience to the law.

God: "Do not Kill"

God: "But if I say you can kill, kill"

Hmmm?

I know it looks like a contradiction, but...

Murder, killing is where someone takes life from another person. It goes against the moral law. Since the law is supposedly a reflection of God's character then God doesn't kill.

So what's up?

Under law vs. under grace.

You see "under law" the sinner must die. Under "grace" the sinner died in the humanity of Christ. The quote you gave is in relationship to the law. God, through Moses, gave the "old covenant", which was "obey and live, disobey and die". Then Israel (out of pride) entered that OC with their eyes fully open. So when one outwardly sinned they had to answer the law. There was no grace.

Hence, we are either "under law" or "under grace". Under law there is only condemnation for none of us are fully meeting it's requirements even though, through the Spirit, we are growing.

plently of grace in the old covenant.

Exodus 34:9

And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O LORD, let my LORD, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

Psalm 84:11

For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
