Moderators lazarus Posted April 8, 2009 Moderators Posted April 8, 2009 Pirates are holding an American ship (Maersk Alabama) and captain/crew hostage on the high seas. The question IS : What is Obama going to do about it? Wow! Obama fixed it even before you started the thread. Inspired by Obama's great leadership the crew retook the ship it seems. The crew of a U.S.-flagged freighter has regained control of the ship from pirates who seized it off Africa, but its captain is being held hostage, the freighter's second officer said Wednesday. Capt. Richard Phillips is being held in the Maersk Alabama's 28-foot lifeboat after the pirates reneged on plans to exchange him for a captured pirate, Ken Quinn told CNN in a ship-to-shore phone interview. Woody Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 Not crew, just the captain. From the sound of it the crew have a pirate hostage and the pirates have the captain hostage. Time for a parlay. Sorry ... the fair and balanced news that I watch is reporting two crew members are being held by the pirates in addition to the caption. I will admit that during early stages of news ... it is hard to know for sure the facts. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. They consider it 'fixed' when the pirates are holding crew and the captain for ransom. Wow ... what a 'fix'. Be interesting. Do the americans in the battleship on it's way arrest them if and when they release the captain? Will the pirates have access to american justice system, complete with free legal counsel? Send them to Gitmo,No can't do that. Treat them as POW's? Can't do that. They are nothing but thugs. Geneva convention apply?NOPE. Maybe we could convince Obama and Barney Frank to release these "misguided" gentleman with the prisoners in Gitmo in their area. I am sure they wouldn't mind Apologize to them because our cargo ship got in their way? Understand maybe they are poor and it is our fault. Do we just negotiate ,win the release of the captain, and wave them on their way? Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. bonnie Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 There is relevant international law and penalties for piracy. I know it may be a new concept, but what the US should and must do is uphold the rule of law. No it is not a new concept, what is the new concept is that liberals have never known a dictator they don't admire,or a terrorist that needs understanding. If I remember correctly it is a little murky as to what is international law. Isn't it true that some countries have a little problem with the pirates as they really don't know what to do. It is entirely possible being turned over to the legal process in their own country they could be beheaded or have their hands chopped of. Maybe we should follow suit as the dictators are so greatly admired. Never fear, many believe we will be struck again. Maybe the apologizing and bowing before others will put a stop to that but doubtful. Iran was really impressed with the invitation to talk. Iran now has an american prisoner. I think espionage carries a death penalty in Iran. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Moderators lazarus Posted April 8, 2009 Moderators Posted April 8, 2009 Redwood you have to admit that going from 20+ hostages to just 1 in a matter of hours is a stunning stroke of leadership on Obama's part. This could have been a much worse if Obama had not ordered those crew members to fightback and those warships to go immediately to the area. Come on Red, he's doing really well in this early test. Moderators Bravus Posted April 9, 2009 Moderators Posted April 9, 2009 And bonnie will accuse me of twisting what she said, but it's pretty clear to me at least that what the words she wrote *mean* is that she wants some US armed force to just go in and kill 'em all. Moderators lazarus Posted April 9, 2009 Moderators Posted April 9, 2009 Redwood All my comments have been tongue in cheek. Its early days. If all the captives were free I doubt that you would have given Obama credit. If they had died I'm sure you all would have said it was Obama's fault. Come on dude this is getting ridiculous. I didn't the same vow that Bravus did........so remember when the Chinese bought down that Ep3 spy plane. The Chinese picked it clean and President Bush did......er......not that much. The men and women in the armed forces near or on the scene will be doing what they have been trained to do. They will be keeping the White House informed. Moderators Bravus Posted April 9, 2009 Moderators Posted April 9, 2009 I would object to going in and killing all the pirates just the same way I would object to solving every bank robbery hostage situation by going in and killing everyone. There are laws and procedures for a reason, and justice is important. Killing someone in the process of freeing the hostages, if there is absolutely no other alternative, is one thing, but bonnie is making disparaging noises about any kind of trial or justice at all. Any time there's a problem, that's the solution. You have a certain arrogance concerning me. Or you deliberately try to put the slant that will seem to show you superior in your moral outlook position you seem convinced you portray. Never said one word about the armed forces going in to kill them all. An honest man will not exaggerate or say what he knows not to be true. As to this.....Any time there's a problem, that's the solution. You would have a difficult time backing this up but that doesn't seem to hinder you at all. The armed force going in now is after the fact. Besides armed forces should bother you. After the fact isn't a whole lot of good. This cargo ships should have the ability to protect themselves whether by private security force or a armed crew. You may not think american citizens have the right to protect themselves but we will just have to disagree. The taking of a US flag ship is serious. If we do not have the ability, the will or the right to protect our citizens or take out Somali pirates we deserve what we get. Assuming you will claim to be an honest man you will not have any problem backing up this statement......... *mean* is that she wants some US armed force to just go in and kill 'em all. Any time there's a problem, that's the solution. Again taking preventative measures first is a lot more effective than chasing pirates across the ocean. But I will wait for you to show where I have said "Kill them all,and that is my solution anytime to a problem Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. You've done it consistently in almost every post this week: it doesn't take a prophet or the son of a prophet to guess you might do it again. If not 'kill them', what does this mean? Quote: ...take out Somali pirates we deserve what we get. I'm honestly not trying to twist your words, just reflect them back. You didn't explicitly say 'kill them' but you disparaged every other alternative possibility. So, I will stand aside: please lay out your proposed solution clearly and simply. No,Bravus said I did. I have no faith in Obama in this.Maybe he will surprise me, for the captain's sake. As long as the hands of the crew and captains of these ships are tied there is little to prevent this from happening. Maybe getting the captain released will be possible. We cannot use Gitmo if they are captured. As the terrorist in 9/11 we must understand why they hate us. Are we obligated to give them a trial here complete with tax paid for legal counsel? If they do go in and the pirates are killed it might get someone's attention. That is not saying they should go in and kill at will. In these situations people die. People like this bring it on themselves. They believe somehow they have a right to terroize, rob and kill. Hopefully it won't be the innocent. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. So, I will stand aside: please lay out your proposed solution clearly and simply. If I did not say kill them then don't decide you know that is what I meant. Men may die in this and it may be the pirates. If so they have brought this on themselves. It is not a wish they die. Take them out means "take them out" of the ability to terrorize and rob and loot. How that can be done after the fact or if, time will tell.If we do not act forcefully in some way we do deserve what we get. Forcefully is not a tactful word for kill. I hope I am wrong but I do not think Obama is up to the challenge. I will be the first to acknowledge I am if wrong. Some years ago my husband and I lost our home in a tornado. Completely gone. Much damage and people killed. We lived on a large island and looters (our pirates} started within an hour coming in across the lake in boats. This was thrus night. Fri morning we were all shocked to see the national guard in force, looked like an invasion. The governor had called them out with "orders to shoot on sight" any looter. Had a very chilling effect on the looters and they soon lost they taste for looting. It seemed pretty harsh to kill looters but the danger they brought to themselves and all of us that had lost everything was pretty harsh as well. Would I have wanted someone shot,NO. But it would have been brought on by their own lawlessness. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. bonnie Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Not that it is something you might be able to accept. I much prefer to see them in prison for life. But that is unlikely . They would never get life and will be out doing so again. I would not want to be the one that exposed them to having hands chopped off or have their head cut off. Returning them to the custody of their police force might have a chilling effect on future actions.
