Cosmin M. Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Why don't alcoholics just switch to non-alc. beer? I mean, isn't it the same taste? Quote

Woody Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Our local hardware store has their own brand name root beer. Oh ... it is hard to resist. MMMMMM Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Dr. Shane Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 I like it too but rarely drink it because of the high sugar content. I only drink the diet or sugar-free versions. I would get very fat, very fast if I drank the high fructose corn syrup mixtures. I don't know about other countries but I have never come across root beer in any Latin American countries. Is this just an American drink. Oh, and yes, I occasionally drink non-alcoholic beer. However root beer tastes much better and the diet variety is much lower in calories. Kountzer Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 A baseball sports writer was expressing his anger about the baseball pitcher who was killed in Calif by a drunk driver. The writer told how his legs were mangled in an accident caused by a drunk driver. He went on to say that he doesn't hate alcohol, and he listed a number of well known, and high priced alcoholic spirits that he likes and keeps in his house. his anger was directed at people who drink then get behind the wheel of a vehicle. When I read all that I thought that is what is wrong with this society on this issue. Americans want to consume alcohol. If there is a party or special event, the occasion will be called a bust unless plenty of alcohol is present. They build bars, nite clubs, convenience stores, etc, close to the roads so that driving patrons have easy access. They want these people to have access because selling alcohol is big business. The consumption of alcohol generates a lot of money. The down side/dark side is it is very easy to leave a party or bar legally drunk and then go get behind the wheel of a car. It is extremely easy. This country wants its cake and be able to eat it too. They want to consume alcohol and make money from it, but they don't want to deal with the cosequences of drunk driving. Members phkrause Posted April 11, 2009 Members Posted April 11, 2009 Shane, my wife used to like to get into all these crazy kind of diets. Well one time she got these tapes from a study done at the University of Utah or what ever the name of the Mormon School is. They did a test on diet sodas and found that they mess up your metabolism. Now this was quite a number of years ago. I threw them out awhile back. And by the way it did mess up her metabolism, and she didn't loose any weight either. I think people sometimes don't realize that you need to exercise in conjuction with eating properly. That one or the other doesn't work by themselves. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Members phkrause Posted April 11, 2009 Members Posted April 11, 2009 I've drank that also and yes it tasted very good. Moderators Gerr Posted April 11, 2009 Moderators Posted April 11, 2009 I don't know about Latine America, but in the Philippines, which has Latin influence, root beer comes under the name sarsaparilla, if I remember correctly. Quote
Dr. Shane Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 ... study done at the University of Utah or what ever the name of the Mormon School is. When that myth was being spread, it was blamed on Nutrasweet, which has mostly been replaced by Spenda now. Those spreading the myth were trying to promote Saccharin - which is also a safe product. It is true that studies have found the more diet soda a person drinks the more overweight they are likely to be. However that is because overweight people are more likely to drink diet soda. It is not because the diet soda is causing them to be overweight. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Moderators Bravus Posted April 12, 2009 Moderators Posted April 12, 2009 It is actually quite easy to drink responsibly without driving drunk, with just a little pre-planning. Not to mention that driving while on the phone has been shown to impair driving as much as alcohol. Anyone here been guilty of that one? In Australia root beer is also called sarsparilla, and has been around at least since I was a nipper. Quote Truth is important
Members phkrause Posted April 12, 2009 Members Posted April 12, 2009 Well Shane says that its a myth, but according to the research that they did, diet soda's effected your metabolism. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Dr. Shane Posted April 12, 2009 Author Posted April 12, 2009 Quote: In Australia root beer is also called sarsparilla That only makes since because root beer is made with sarsaparilla root. Its origins actually go much further back than prohibition but prohibition was a big boost to root beer because the breweries that had been brewing beer could use their same equipment to make root beer. Quote: driving while on the phone has been shown to impair driving as much as alcohol That is more of an argument against cell phone use in cars than in favor of alcohol use in public areas where driving frequently occurs afterward. I believe that any public place that serves alcohol should be required to take the customer's keys (or driver's license if they claim they did not drive) when serving them a drink. When the customer is prepared to leave they must than pass a breathalyzer (conveniently located) to get their keys or license back. If they fail they must produce a sober driver that will take them home or call a taxi. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
