Liz Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I'm with GLG, I wanted to find out what the plant/weed turned out to be. Oh well, at least you still have your poppies. Members phkrause Posted August 16, 2009 Members Posted August 16, 2009 Since it looks like we'll never know, lets just call it "Big Weed". :) :) hee hee hee hee hee pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Woody Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 I am sorry about Redwood's Weed. I would like to have continued this saga but I was not consulted in this weed matter. I do still have some mini-weed matters. IOWs ... if there are any volunteers out there that are still wanting to pull weeds .... come on over. Just don't pull up my poppies. Administrators Gail Posted August 16, 2009 Administrators Posted August 16, 2009 I was so sorry to read of the demise of Redwood's weed. I was thinking there was some material for a new horror B-movie. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

GreatLakesGramma Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Just the same, I'm going to save the picture to show my dad. If whatever that weed is grows around here, he'll know what it is, even without the flowers. He's a farmer, son of a farmer, grandson of a farmer, etc. He's lived much of his life outdoors, knowing and dealing with plants. Lewis
Dottie Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 GLG and all- - FYI I think that the plant looked as if it was a thistle. I looked up thistles in Wikipedia and the only one that seemed to grow about as tall as the one Redwood described is "Onopordum," which is said to grow up to 3 meters high. Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 HEY GREATLAKESGRAMMA SO is that were you get you green thumb????? SMILE SMILE SMILE SMILE SMILE dgrimm60 Yep! You know it! GreatLakesGramma Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Dottie, I looked up Onopordum in my wildflower book, & it doesn't look anything like Redwood's plant. It has very narrow leaves, and heavy triangular spines running down a winged stem. Redwood, was it a spiny plant? Did it prick, sting, make you itch, or cause a rash when you touched it? Did it have a strong smell? What was the stem like? round? square? heavy? woody? Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
Woody Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 Hey GLG ... I will look forward to hearing the report from your Dad. And as far as your questions ... I don't know. I didn't touch it. I'll have to ask Blanche. But all of the weeds of Redwood's are "woody". Ha Ha. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

GreatLakesGramma Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I am sorry to have to disappoint you all, and I'm pretty disappointed myself, but my dad doesn't know what this plant is. He has never seen one before. I guess those don't grow in Michigan. It could be something non-native from someone's birdseed. A bird could have carried it over there to eat it, then got startled by something and dropped it. Or it could be some mutant from some secret government experiments, escaped from their secret lab, ready to over-run the earth, but from which Blanche and the church men have saved the world. Or not. Thanks for trying GLG. This is the second expert who has never seen it. The local Master Gardener from this area said the same thing. It had to be an illegal alien.
