I received this from a friend and thought it was good:

Liberal or Conservative

If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn`t buy one.

If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat.

If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy.

A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful.

Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.

A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.

Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.

A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.

A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed.

If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor and then sues.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.

A liberal will delete it because he's "offended".

Whoops ... I forgot one more:

If a conservative gets soaked by the credit card ... he stops using it.

If a liberal gets soaked by the credit card ... he stops all others from being able to use it.

Yes. Just check out the credit card discussion for a prime example of it.

Redwood I hate to wake you, but I am considered a liberal by most of my friends and if I were to pick which of those I do I pick the first sentence on each point. My point is that the labels conservative for republicans and liberal for democrats doesn't amount to a hill of beans, there just labels and nothing more. Because I know more democrats that are conservative in everything they do and republicans that are liberal in all they do. How do you explain that? I'm sorry but I've never cared for labels and never will. At least not to me.

Labels do not fit in many cases however sometimes we have to use them for effective communication.

The credit card remark is certainly off base. Dave Ramsey is as against credit cards as one can be and he is a very conservative Republican. He supported Mike Huckabee for president in 2008.

pk ... I admit that some might be off. But the point of this is to demonstrate that it is the Demos who want to make laws to ban things generally. Republicans in general believe in free choice. I realize that there are some areas that do not hold true. But in general this is true.

Yes Richard. As a Seventh day Adventist ... one reason why I am a republican is that I believe in small government. I don't want the demos imposing their desires on me and my religion.

I have to agree with CoAspen on this guys. There's always been a religious agenda inside the Republican party.

Democrats have always had their own agenda as well. You are seeing it every day with the power grabs they are trying for.

Let's not forget when Obama thought God was a handy partner he didn't hesitate.

There is no reason a president need hang his religious convictions in a tree till he is no longer president. It is when any leader tries to enforce his religious conviction on the US citizens that is when it is wrong.

Amen Bonnie, I think their religion is Socialism. Global warming also requires a religous type of belief.

Both sides have their agendas to force their morality on others. The reason I have to flush my toilet twice is because liberals won't let manufacture's build a good toilet anymore.

This is why Seventh-day Adventist should be moderates. We should be somewhere in the middle. Each person can vote as they like but I think it is a mistake to be loyal to any one political party. I vote for the candidate, not the party.

Yeah I've heard that before. You tell me which party he is, and I can tell you almost excactly how he thinks.

You're right about the reason they can't make a good toilet anymore.

Can you show me where it says a SDA should be a moderate?

I have little inclination to ever vote democrat. I cannot accept most of what they stand for. Nor do I accept their method of achieving their aim. The health care bill comes to mind.

When you vote for a candidate you vote for the party,no way around it.

A democrat no matter how disguised is a democrat and not likely to stray to far from the shepherd. Look what happened to Lieberman.

It would be nice if many of the republicans could somehow lean how to grow a spine before election in 2010.

...Can you show me where it says a SDA should be a moderate?...

"Let your moderation be known unto all men." - Phillipians 4:5

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

Neither my King James version or my New King James version reads as you have posted.

Both say......

"Let your gentleness be known to all men.The Lord is at hand"

It is interesting tho you have to admit. For me,I am not moderate in my drinking alcohol,in my drug use,in my faithfulness to my husband,I don't moderately steal from others so I must not qualify as a moderate SDA according to Tom and the way he has used this text.

That is from the KJV - See http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians+4&version=KJV

By the way, do a search of EGW to see what positive things she has to say about being conservative.

And maybe compare her views on moderation in all things...

And finally, take into account that she describes the Pharisees as seeing Jesus as being "too liberal."

I'm just saying...

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

By the way, do a search of EGW to see what positive things she has to say about being conservative.

Do a word study of how Ellen White used "conservative" in her writings and tell us what she meant by it.

Below are two examples. Notice the definition in the parenthesis as given by the Ellen White Estate:

Quote:
The work which the church has failed to do in a time of peace and prosperity she will have to do in a terrible crisis under most discouraging, forbidding circumstances. The warnings that worldly conformity has silenced or withheld must be given under the fiercest opposition from enemies of the faith. And at that time the superficial, conservative [ELLEN WHITE IS NOT HERE DISTINGUISHING THEOLOGICAL CONSERVATIVES FROM THEIR LIBERAL COUNTERPARTS; SHE IS DESCRIBING THOSE WHO PUT "WORLDLY CONFORMITY" FIRST AND GOD'S CAUSE SECOND.] class, whose influence has steadily retarded the progress of the work, will renounce the faith.--5T 463 (1885). {LDE 174.3}

Consider the context of her use of "conservative":

Quote:

Great efforts have been made to secure the patronage of the wealthy. The Sanitarium has not been a success, and will not prove such, unless those who are connected with it shall give it a different mold. If this institution shall be conducted as it has been, with so little of the influence of the Holy Spirit, it will not answer the purpose of God, and will be rejected by him. It was Satan's device to lead to a great expenditure of means in building and furnishing, when there were not sufficient funds to sustain such an outlay. Those who were responsible for this heavy debt, felt that extra effort must be made to secure patients; hence a conservative spirit has come in; little by little has the transforming been going on in the Sanitarium, until the object for which it was started has been almost lost. {PH100 55.2}

In order to meet the real wants of the people, the stern motives of religious principle must be a controlling power. But it is not thus. When Christians and worldlings are brought together, the Christian element is not to assimilate with the unsanctified. The contrast must be kept sharp and positive between the two. They are servants of two masters. One class strive to keep the humble path of obedience to God's requirements,--the path of simplicity, meekness, and humility,--imitating the Pattern, Christ Jesus. The other class are in every way the opposite of the first. They are servants of the world, eager and ambitious to follow its fashions in extravagant dress and in the gratification of appetite. This is the field in which Christ has given those connected with the Sanitarium their appointed work. We are not to lessen the distance between us and worldlings by coming to their standard, stepping down from the high path cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in. But the charms exhibited in the Christian's life,--the principles carried out in our daily work, in holding appetite under the control of reason, maintaining simplicity in dress, and engaging in holy conversation,--will be a continual light shining upon the pathway of those whose habits are false. {PH100 55.3}

It would be a mistake, then, to assume that her use of the word was the same as ours today. As a matter of fact, Ellen White's use of the word conservative was quite different from the way it is commonly used in our own day.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
