Members phkrause Posted December 3, 2009 Members Posted December 3, 2009 Isaiah 11:1-16(Good News Translation) Thursday December 3, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Isaiah 11:1-16: Today’s passage is a prophecy of hope for the Israelites who have been oppressed by the Assyrians. Isaiah describes a future king who will come from the line of David. He will be wise, just and powerful, living in obedience to the LORD. He will bring such peace that even dangerous animals will no longer be threats. By his rule, all people will come to know and love God. Today's Scripture: Isaiah 11:9 On Zion, God’s sacred hill, there will be nothing harmful or evil. The land will be as full of knowledge of the LORD as the seas are full of water. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1The royal line of David is like a tree that has been cut down; but just as new branches sprout from a stump, so a new king will arise from among David's descendants.2The spirit of the LORD will give him wisdom and the knowledge and skill to rule his people. He will know the LORD's will and honor him, 3and find pleasure in obeying him. He will not judge by appearance or hearsay; 4he will judge the poor fairly and defend the rights of the helpless. At his command the people will be punished, and evil persons will die.5He will rule his people with justice and integrity.6Wolves and sheep will live together in peace, and leopards will lie down with young goats. Calves and lion cubs will feed together, and little children will take care of them.7Cows and bears will eat together, and their calves and cubs will lie down in peace. Lions will eat straw as cattle do. 8Even a baby will not be harmed if it plays near a poisonous snake.9On Zion, God's sacred hill, there will be nothing harmful or evil. The land will be as full of knowledge of the LORD as the seas are full of water.10A day is coming when the new king from the royal line of David will be a symbol to the nations. They will gather in his royal city and give him honor.11When that day comes, the Lord will once again use his power and bring back home those of his people who are left in Assyria and Egypt, in the lands of Pathros, Ethiopia, Elam, Babylonia, and Hamath, and in the coastlands and on the islands of the sea.12The Lord will raise a signal flag to show the nations that he is gathering together again the scattered people of Israel and Judah and bringing them back from the four corners of the earth.13The kingdom of Israel will not be jealous of Judah any more, and Judah will not be the enemy of Israel.14Together they will attack the Philistines on the west and plunder the people who live to the east. They will conquer the people of Edom and Moab, and the people of Ammon will obey them.15The LORD will dry up the Gulf of Suez, and he will bring a hot wind to dry up the Euphrates, leaving only seven tiny streams, so that anyone can walk across.16There will be a highway out of Assyria for those of his people Israel who have survived there, just as there was for their ancestors when they left Egypt. Reflect The image of the stump may mean that David’s royal dynasty has been threatened and reduced in power. Or it may refer to a future time when the line of Judah’s kings descended from David would be removed from the throne. However, it is clear that this future king will rule as God rules—with justice, mercy, compassion and peace. What does this passage mean to you? Pray Lord God, you have promised your people a future filled with justice, mercy, compassion and peace. Help me follow the way of Christ in bringing these things into our world. In your holy name I pray, Amen. Prayer Concern Hungry children Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted December 4, 2009 Author Members Posted December 4, 2009 Isaiah 25:1-12(Good News Translation) Friday December 4, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Isaiah 25:1-12: Today’s passage is a prayer of thanks to God. It describes promises fulfilled, including the elimination of threats from enemies and shelter for those in need. It then offers a vision of God bringing new life as the LORD destroys the power of death, and promises that the people will celebrate in the presence and protection of God. Today's Scripture: Isaiah 25:1a LORD, you are my God; I will honor you and praise your name. You have done amazing things. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1LORD, you are my God; I will honor you and praise your name. You have done amazing things; you have faithfully carried out the plans you made long ago.2You have turned cities into ruins and destroyed their fortifications. The palaces which our enemies built are gone forever.3The people of powerful nations will praise you; you will be feared in the cities of cruel nations.4The poor and the helpless have fled to you and have been safe in times of trouble. You give them shelter from storms and shade from the burning heat. Cruel enemies attack like a winter storm,5like drought in a dry land. But you, LORD, have silenced our enemies; you silence the shouts of cruel people, as a cloud cools a hot day.6Here on Mount Zion the LORD Almighty will prepare a banquet for all the nations of the world—a banquet of the richest food and the finest wine.7Here he will suddenly remove the cloud of sorrow that has been hanging over all the nations.8The Sovereign LORD will destroy death forever! He will wipe away the tears from everyone's eyes and take away the disgrace his people have suffered throughout the world. The LORD himself has spoken.9When it happens, everyone will say, He is our God! We have put our trust in him, and he has rescued us. He is the LORD! We have put our trust in him, and now we are happy and joyful because he has saved us.10The LORD will protect Mount Zion, but the people of Moab will be trampled down the way straw is trampled in manure.11They will reach out their hands as if they were trying to swim, but God will humiliate them, and their hands will sink helplessly.12He will destroy the fortresses of Moab with their high walls and bring them tumbling down into the dust. Reflect Reread 25:7-8. The “cloud of sorrow” or “burial clothes” (as stated in the Contemporary English Version) may refer to clothes worn by those who are in mourning, or to the strips of linen cloth used to wrap a dead body. If the people are in burial clothes, it is because Israel has been defeated by other nations. The image of God unraveling burial clothes also suggests bringing someone back to life from death. What images in this text are most powerful to you? Why? Pray Lord, you are my God, and I praise you for doing the wonderful things you planned and promised. You are a place of safety for all who are in need. Thank you for saving me. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 6, 2009 Author Members Posted December 6, 2009 Malachi 3:1-4(Good News Translation) Sunday December 6, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Malachi 3:1-4: Malachi was written around 470-440 BC after the rebuilding of the temple and while Judah was under Persian control. The people kept forgetting that God loved them, so God's rules and rituals seemed to be hard and demanding. Malachi prophesied in order to remind people of God's love and to call people back to joyful obedience to God. In today's passage, Malachi speaks to the people's concern that God doesn't care about them by saying that God will send a special messenger to destroy evil. Today's Scripture: Malachi 3:1a The LORD Almighty answers, "I will send my messenger to prepare the way for me." How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1The LORD Almighty answers, I will send my messenger to prepare the way for me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger you long to see will come and proclaim my covenant.2But who will be able to endure the day when he comes? Who will be able to survive when he appears? He will be like strong soap, like a fire that refines metal.3He will come to judge like one who refines and purifies silver. As a metalworker refines silver and gold, so the LORD's messenger will purify the priests, so that they will bring to the LORD the right kind of offerings.4Then the offerings which the people of Judah and Jerusalem bring to the LORD will be pleasing to him, as they used to be in the past. Reflect For Malachi, the "messenger" is a person who would prepare the people for the LORD's coming or return. He would prepare them by making sure that the priests and the people brought proper gifts and sacrifices to the temple and that they got rid of any foreign idols. Many years later, the early Christians described John the Baptist as this "messenger" (Matthew 11:10; Mark 1:2; Luke 1:76; 7:27). What can you do to prepare once again for the birth of Christ in this Advent season? Pray Lord God, amid the holiday hustle and bustle, too often we forget the true purpose of our Christmas celebrations. Prepare my heart and mind for the birth of Christ, that my Christmas celebration may be a true expression of faith. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 7, 2009 Author Members Posted December 7, 2009 Malachi 4:1-6(Good News Translation) Monday December 7, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Malachi 4:1-6: Today's passage predicts a day of judgment. Malachi says that there will be a time when the Lord will use fire to punish evil people. But those who honor the name of God will experience great victory and freedom. God will empower the faithful to bring justice to the land. Malachi reminds the people to remember the laws and commandments, and says that God promises to send the prophet Elijah to lead people in love. Today's Scripture: Malachi 4:1a, 2a The LORD Almighty says, ... "But for you who obey me, my saving power will rise on you like the sun and bring healing like the sun's rays." How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1The LORD Almighty says, The day is coming when all proud and evil people will burn like straw. On that day they will burn up, and there will be nothing left of them.2But for you who obey me, my saving power will rise on you like the sun and bring healing like the sun's rays. You will be as free and happy as calves let out of a stall.3On the day when I act, you will overcome the wicked, and they will be like dust under your feet.4Remember the teachings of my servant Moses, the laws and commands which I gave him at Mount Sinai for all the people of Israel to obey.5But before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes, I will send you the prophet Elijah.6He will bring fathers and children together again; otherwise I would have to come and destroy your country. Reflect Fire has several meanings in the Bible. It is a sign of God's presence, for example, when God spoke to Moses through the burning bush (Exodus 3:2). It was important in the worship of God in Israel's temple, both burning on the altar as a sign of God's presence and in the making of offerings (Leviticus 6:12-15). Also, it was a symbol of God's anger (Psalms 79:5; 89:46). Finally, God used it to purify or test the people (Psalm 66:12; Isaiah 43:2). What does fire mean in the context of this passage? Pray Lord, there are times when I feel as though I am experiencing "trial by fire"-as though I am being tested in faith. Remind me that the flame of your love burns continuously in my heart, that my faith and obedience may be sparked anew. Amen. When people come to be baptized, he challenges them to repent of their sins and to share with those in need. He also instructs tax collectors and soldiers to treat people justly. He then tells how Jesus will come and baptize them with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Today's Scripture: Luke 3:6 'The whole human race will see God's salvation!' How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1It was the fifteenth year of the rule of Emperor Tiberius; Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip was ruler of the territory of Iturea and Trachonitis; Lysanias was ruler of Abilene,2and Annas and Caiaphas were High Priests. At that time the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.3So John went throughout the whole territory of the Jordan River, preaching, Turn away from your sins and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins.4As it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah: Someone is shouting in the desert: Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!5Every valley must be filled up, every hill and mountain leveled off. The winding roads must be made straight, and the rough paths made smooth.6The whole human race will see God's salvation!7Crowds of people came out to John to be baptized by him. You snakes! he said to them. Who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send?8Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins. And don't start saying among yourselves that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these rocks and make descendants for Abraham!9The ax is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire.10The people asked him, What are we to do, then?11He answered, Whoever has two shirts must give one to the man who has none, and whoever has food must share it.12Some tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, Teacher, what are we to do?13Don't collect more than is legal, he told them.14Some soldiers also asked him, What about us? What are we to do? He said to them, Don't take money from anyone by force or accuse anyone falsely. Be content with your pay.15People's hopes began to rise, and they began to wonder whether John perhaps might be the Messiah.16So John said to all of them, I baptize you with water, but someone is coming who is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.17He has his winnowing shovel with him, to thresh out all the grain and gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out.18In many different ways John preached the Good News to the people and urged them to change their ways.19But John reprimanded Governor Herod, because he had married Herodias, his brother's wife, and had done many other evil things.20Then Herod did an even worse thing by putting John in prison. Reflect John offers a vision of the Lord, through whom paths will be straightened and mountains and valleys will be leveled. This "leveling" stands for equality and justice, marking the promise that all will have access to God's grace, mercy, and justice. What does John's message have for people today? Pray Holy God, in this Advent season, help me prepare the way of the Lord, that all will see the saving power of God. Make your grace known to all people, and help us experience your love anew. Amen. Travelers to Jerusalem probably used the psalm as they passed the city's gates or as they arrived in the temple area. It offers a prayer for peace and a commitment to the good of the city. Today's Scripture: Psalm 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the LORD's house." How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the LORD's house.2And now we are here, standing inside the gates of Jerusalem!3Jerusalem is a city restored in beautiful order and harmony.4This is where the tribes come, the tribes of Israel, to give thanks to the LORD according to his command.5Here the kings of Israel sat to judge their people.6Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you prosper.7May there be peace inside your walls and safety in your palaces.8For the sake of my relatives and friends I say to Jerusalem, Peace be with you!9For the sake of the house of the LORD our God I pray for your prosperity. Reflect Reread 122:5. The royal palace of King David and his descendants was in Jerusalem. As king of the universe, God wills "justice." It was the responsibility of the earthly kings, David and his descendants, to establish justice on earth. Whose responsibility is it to establish justice on earth now? What is the role of the church in calling for justice? What is the role of individual Christians in seeking justice? Just as servants seek mercy from their masters, the psalmist seeks mercy from God. This prayer for help for the whole people probably fits well into the period after the Babylonian exile. Although the people had returned to the land, other nations still ruled over them and caused them problems. Today's Scripture: Psalm 123:1 LORD, I look up to you, up to heaven, where you rule. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1LORD, I look up to you, up to heaven, where you rule.2As a servant depends on his master, as a maid depends on her mistress, so we will keep looking to you, O LORD our God, until you have mercy on us.3Be merciful to us, LORD, be merciful; we have been treated with so much contempt.4We have been mocked too long by the rich and scorned by proud oppressors. Reflect This psalm was likely sung by travelers to Jerusalem. They sing about lifting their eyes to God. In doing so, they shift their focus from the suffering they are experiencing and direct it toward God's love and mercy. How can shifting your focus away from your struggles and toward God help keep you grounded in faith? Pray Oh Lord my God, I lift my eyes to you amid the struggles of my life. Keep me focused on your will and your word, that I may trust in your love always. Amen. It expresses thanks for God's protection in the face of violence. It also names God as the creator and protector of all. The circumstances of the "attack" in this psalm are not known, but it appears that the prayer of the peoples have been answered. Today's Scripture: Psalm 124:8 Our help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1What if the LORD had not been on our side? Answer, O Israel!2If the LORD had not been on our side when our enemies attacked us,3then they would have swallowed us alive in their furious anger against us;4then the flood would have carried us away, the water would have covered us,5the raging torrent would have drowned us.6Let us thank the LORD, who has not let our enemies destroy us.7We have escaped like a bird from a hunter's trap; the trap is broken, and we are free!8Our help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. Reflect Psalms 120-134 are psalms that were probably used by worshipers as they were going up the hills to Jerusalem for festivals. The psalms are short and easy to memorize. What songs of faith inspire and energize you for worship? What songs strengthen you along your faith journey? What songs remind you of God's grace and love? What songs bring you closer to God during this season of Advent? Pray Lord, thank you for the gift of music. As in previous psalms this week, this psalm celebrates God's protection for the people traveling to Jerusalem for religious festivals. Just as God's city is protected by mountains, God's people are protected by God's loving arms. Though wickedness exists, God's love endures and strengthens. The psalm ends with a prayer for justice. Today's Scripture: Psalm 125:4 LORD, do good to those who are good, to those who obey your commands. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which can never be shaken, never be moved.2As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, now and forever.3The wicked will not always rule over the land of the righteous; if they did, the righteous themselves might do evil.4LORD, do good to those who are good, to those who obey your commands.5But when you punish the wicked, punish also those who abandon your ways. Peace be with Israel! Reflect This psalm suggests that faith is the appropriate response to God's loving protection. What images come to mind when you read this psalm? How do you experience God's protection in your life? Has this sense of protection increased your faith? Pray Lord, you protect your people by holding them in your arms now and forever. Members phkrause Posted December 13, 2009 Author Members Posted December 13, 2009 Revelation 1:1-20(Good News Translation) Sunday December 13, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Revelation 1:1-20: The word translated as "revelation" comes from the Greek word "apokalypsis," meaning a revealing or an unveiling. The book of Revelation belongs to a kind of writing called apocalyptic literature. In today's passage, John tells how he received a message from an angel sent by Christ who received it from God. He offers a blessing to all who read this prophecy and introduces the main theme of the book: Jesus has conquered death, rules over all earthly powers, and will come again to judge all people. Then he tells about his vision of the risen Lord. Today's Scripture: Revelation 1:8 "I am the first and the last," says the Lord God Almighty, who is, who was, and who is to come. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1This book is the record of the events that Jesus Christ revealed. God gave him this revelation in order to show to his servants what must happen very soon. Christ made these things known to his servant John by sending his angel to him,2and John has told all that he has seen. This is his report concerning the message from God and the truth revealed by Jesus Christ.3Happy is the one who reads this book, and happy are those who listen to the words of this prophetic message and obey what is written in this book! For the time is near when all these things will happen.4From John to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace be yours from God, who is, who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits in front of his throne,5and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first to be raised from death and who is also the ruler of the kings of the world. He loves us, and by his sacrificial death he has freed us from our sins6and made us a kingdom of priests to serve his God and Father. To Jesus Christ be the glory and power forever and ever! Amen.7Look, he is coming on the clouds! Everyone will see him, including those who pierced him. All peoples on earth will mourn over him. So shall it be!8I am the first and the last, says the Lord God Almighty, who is, who was, and who is to come.9I am John, your brother, and as a follower of Jesus I am your partner in patiently enduring the suffering that comes to those who belong to his Kingdom. I was put on the island of Patmos because I had proclaimed God's word and the truth that Jesus revealed.10On the Lord's day the Spirit took control of me, and I heard a loud voice, that sounded like a trumpet, speaking behind me.11It said, Write down what you see, and send the book to the churches in these seven cities: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.12I turned around to see who was talking to me, and I saw seven gold lampstands,13and among them there was what looked like a human being, wearing a robe that reached to his feet, and a gold band around his chest.14His hair was white as wool, or as snow, and his eyes blazed like fire;15his feet shone like brass that has been refined and polished, and his voice sounded like a roaring waterfall.16He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came out of his mouth. His face was as bright as the midday sun.17When I saw him, I fell down at his feet like a dead man. He placed his right hand on me and said, Don't be afraid! I am the first and the last.18I am the living one! I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I have authority over death and the world of the dead.19Write, then, the things you see, both the things that are now and the things that will happen afterward.20Here is the secret meaning of the seven stars that you see in my right hand, and of the seven gold lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. Reflect Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, were sometimes used to mean "first" and "last" in a list of things. John uses this expression twice in Revelation: in the beginning of the book (1:8, 17) and toward the end of the book (21:6). The prophet Isaiah uses a similar expression to describe the completeness of God (Isaiah 44:6; 48:12). What does the idea of God being the Alpha and Omega mean to you? Pray Lord, you are indeed the Alpha and Omega, the one who is and was and is coming. You are God All-Powerful, and I praise you! Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 14, 2009 Author Members Posted December 14, 2009 Revelation 4:1-11(Good News Translation) Monday December 14, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Revelation 4:1-11: John reports his vision of the Holy One on the throne who is being praised by four living creatures and by 24 elders. The number of elders most likely represents the sum of the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles of Jesus. Together, these symbolize all of God's chosen people. Today's Scripture: Revelation 4:11a "Our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power." How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1At this point I had another vision and saw an open door in heaven. And the voice that sounded like a trumpet, which I had heard speaking to me before, said, Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.2At once the Spirit took control of me. There in heaven was a throne with someone sitting on it.3His face gleamed like such precious stones as jasper and carnelian, and all around the throne there was a rainbow the color of an emerald.4In a circle around the throne were twenty-four other thrones, on which were seated twenty-four elders dressed in white and wearing crowns of gold.5From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. In front of the throne seven lighted torches were burning, which are the seven spirits of God.6Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. Surrounding the throne on each of its sides, were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and behind.7The first one looked like a lion; the second looked like a bull; the third had a face like a human face; and the fourth looked like an eagle in flight.8Each one of the four living creatures had six wings, and they were covered with eyes, inside and out. Day and night they never stop singing: Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was, who is, and who is to come.9The four living creatures sing songs of glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever. When they do so,10the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives forever and ever. They throw their crowns down in front of the throne and say,11Our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. For you created all things, and by your will they were given existence and life. Reflect The four living creatures are similar to the creatures the prophet Ezekiel saw in a vision (Ezekiel 1:5-11). Over the centuries, these creatures became associated with the four Gospel writers. These living creatures represent the people of God, just as the four creatures in Daniel represent the evil empires that try to rule the world (Daniel 7). The many eyes likely symbolize that they can see everything in every direction. The lion, bull, human, and eagle faces probably represent authority, strength, wisdom, and swiftness, all things valued in creation. These creatures never stop praising God. How can John's vision of worship inspire your worship? Pray Holy, holy, holy are you Lord, who was and is and is coming! You are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. You created all things and care for all things. Thank you for your great love. Amen. But then a lamb appears and takes the scroll, as all beings in heaven and on earth rejoice. Today's Scripture: Revelation 5:13b "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be praise and honor, glory and might, forever and ever!" How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who sits on the throne; it was covered with writing on both sides and was sealed with seven seals. 2And I saw a mighty angel, who announced in a loud voice, Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll? 3But there was no one in heaven or on earth or in the world below who could open the scroll and look inside it. 4I cried bitterly because no one could be found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside it. 5Then one of the elders said to me, Don't cry. Look! The Lion from Judah's tribe, the great descendant of David, has won the victory, and he can break the seven seals and open the scroll. 6Then I saw a Lamb standing in the center of the throne, surrounded by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb appeared to have been killed. It had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God that have been sent through the whole earth. 7The Lamb went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who sits on the throne. 8As he did so, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each had a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God's people. 9They sang a new song: You are worthy to take the scroll and to break open its seals. For you were killed, and by your sacrificial death you bought for God people from every tribe, language, nation, and race. 10You have made them a kingdom of priests to serve our God, and they shall rule on earth. 11Again I looked, and I heard angels, thousands and millions of them! They stood around the throne, the four living creatures, and the elders, 12and sang in a loud voice: The Lamb who was killed is worthy to receive power, wealth, wisdom, and strength, honor, glory, and praise! 13And I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, in the world below, and in the sea—all living beings in the universe—and they were singing: To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be praise and honor, glory and might, forever and ever! 14The four living creatures answered, Amen! And the elders fell down and worshiped. Reflect Today's passage contains poignant symbolism. The scroll represents God's plan for the future. To break the seals is to cause these events to happen. The lamb represents Christ. The lamb shows signs of once having been slaughtered, just as Christ once died but became alive again. This lamb image is based, in part, on Isaiah 53:7, which talks about a servant of God who is silent like a lamb about to be slaughtered. Other New Testament passages describe Jesus as a sacrificial lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7; 1 Peter 1:19). How are symbols useful in telling a story? Pray Loving God, your Word speaks to us in so many ways: symbols, visions, stories, poetry, sayings and more. Thank you for the many ways in which you teach us your will and your way. Amen. Then he sees a large crowd representing the whole community of God's people. They have "washed their robes and made them white with the blood of the Lamb" meaning that Christ has forgiven them. The white clothes show that their lives have been made pure. The crowd worships God together. Today's Scripture: Revelation 7:10B "Salvation comes from our God, who sits on the throne, and from the Lamb!" How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds so that no wind should blow on the earth or the sea or against any tree. 2And I saw another angel coming up from the east with the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels to whom God had given the power to damage the earth and the sea. 3The angel said, Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees, until we mark the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads. 4And I was told that the number of those who were marked with God's seal on their foreheads was 144,000. They were from the twelve tribes of Israel, 5-8twelve thousand from each tribe: Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. 9After this I looked, and there was an enormous crowd—no one could count all the people! They were from every race, tribe, nation, and language, and they stood in front of the throne and of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 10They called out in a loud voice: Salvation comes from our God, who sits on the throne, and from the Lamb! 11All the angels stood around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures. Then they threw themselves face downward in front of the throne and worshiped God, 12saying, Amen! Praise, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever! Amen! 13One of the elders asked me, Who are these people dressed in white robes, and where do they come from? 14I don't know, sir. You do, I answered. He said to me, These are the people who have come safely through the terrible persecution. They have washed their robes and made them white with the blood of the Lamb. 15That is why they stand before God's throne and serve him day and night in his temple. He who sits on the throne will protect them with his presence. 16Never again will they hunger or thirst; neither sun nor any scorching heat will burn them, 17because the Lamb, who is in the center of the throne, will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Reflect In this passage, an angel puts the seal of the living God on 144,000 people. This mark may have been like the design on a king's signet ring, used to put the king's seal on official papers or to mark the king's personal property. It is a sign of ownership. The number 144,000 is a symbolic number for the twelve tribes of Israel multiplied by twelve and then by one thousand. Among other things, the number twelve was considered a symbol of completeness. This group represents the complete people of God. Yet we know that the complete community of God grows with every generation. How do we mark God's ownership of us today? Pray Holy God, baptize me with the power of the Holy Spirit and anoint me with your word, that I may become a living member of your holy community. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 17, 2009 Author Members Posted December 17, 2009 Revelation 14:1-20(Good News Translation) Thursday December 17, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Revelation 14:1-20: Today we start reading a section that begins with a vision of the Lamb worshiping with those who bear his name. They have been rescued by Christ and are the first of many who will share in the new life of God's people. The vision continues with a description of how God will judge everyone. Those who worship the beast will face God's anger and punishment. Today's Scripture: Revelation 14:7 "Honor God and praise his greatness! For the time has come for him to judge all people. Worship him who made heaven, earth, sea, and the springs of water!" How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1Then I looked, and there was the Lamb standing on Mount Zion; with him were 144,000 people who have his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. 2And I heard a voice from heaven that sounded like a roaring waterfall, like a loud peal of thunder. It sounded like the music made by musicians playing their harps. 3The 144,000 people stood before the throne, the four living creatures, and the elders; they were singing a new song, which only they could learn. Of the whole human race they are the only ones who have been redeemed. 4They are the men who have kept themselves pure by not having sexual relations with women; they are virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been redeemed from the rest of the human race and are the first ones to be offered to God and to the Lamb. 5They have never been known to tell lies; they are faultless. 6Then I saw another angel flying high in the air, with an eternal message of Good News to announce to the peoples of the earth, to every race, tribe, language, and nation. 7He said in a loud voice, Honor God and praise his greatness! For the time has come for him to judge all people. Worship him who made heaven, earth, sea, and the springs of water! 8A second angel followed the first one, saying, She has fallen! Great Babylon has fallen! She made all peoples drink her wine—the strong wine of her immoral lust! 9A third angel followed the first two, saying in a loud voice, Those who worship the beast and its image and receive the mark on their forehead or on their hand 10will themselves drink God's wine, the wine of his fury, which he has poured at full strength into the cup of his anger! All who do this will be tormented in fire and sulfur before the holy angels and the Lamb. 11The smoke of the fire that torments them goes up forever and ever. There is no relief day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, for anyone who has the mark of its name. 12This calls for endurance on the part of God's people, those who obey God's commandments and are faithful to Jesus. 13Then I heard a voice from heaven saying, Write this: Happy are those who from now on die in the service of the Lord! Yes indeed! answers the Spirit. They will enjoy rest from their hard work, because the results of their service go with them. 14Then I looked, and there was a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was what looked like a human being, with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15Then another angel came out from the temple and cried out in a loud voice to the one who was sitting on the cloud, Use your sickle and reap the harvest, because the time has come; the earth is ripe for the harvest! 16Then the one who sat on the cloud swung his sickle on the earth, and the earth's harvest was reaped. 17Then I saw another angel come out of the temple in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18Then another angel, who is in charge of the fire, came from the altar. He shouted in a loud voice to the angel who had the sharp sickle, Use your sickle, and cut the grapes from the vineyard of the earth, because the grapes are ripe! 19So the angel swung his sickle on the earth, cut the grapes from the vine, and threw them into the wine press of God's furious anger. 20The grapes were squeezed out in the wine press outside the city, and blood came out of the wine press in a flood two hundred miles long and about five feet deep. Reflect Reread 14:18-19. The prophets of Israel spoke of God's people as a vineyard where grapes are grown (Isaiah 5). They also compared God's judgment on the people for their disobedience to the harvesting of grapes (Joel 3:13). Similar images are used here to describe what will happen to people who reject God. How do these images contrast with the images of God's followers? What can we learn from this passage today? Pray Holy Lord, I yearn to be among your precious people. Yet too often I fail to follow your word. Forgive me for the times when I worship false idols rather than following you. Redeem my life that I may live by your word. Amen. He sees people who have defeated the beast and are now worshiping God. The sacred tent opens and the smoke of God's anger pours out. Today's Scripture: Revelation 15:3b "Lord God Almighty, how great and wonderful are your deeds! King of the nations, how right and true are your ways!" How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1Then I saw in the sky another mysterious sight, great and amazing. There were seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last ones, because they are the final expression of God's anger. 2Then I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire. I also saw those who had won the victory over the beast and its image and over the one whose name is represented by a number. They were standing by the sea of glass, holding harps that God had given them 3and singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb: Lord God Almighty, how great and wonderful are your deeds! King of the nations, how right and true are your ways! 4Who will not stand in awe of you, Lord? Who will refuse to declare your greatness? You alone are holy. All the nations will come and worship you, because your just actions are seen by all. 5After this I saw the temple in heaven open, with the Sacred Tent in it. 6The seven angels who had the seven plagues came out of the temple, dressed in clean shining linen and with gold bands tied around their chests. 7Then one of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven gold bowls full of the anger of God, who lives forever and ever. 8The temple was filled with smoke from the glory and power of God, and no one could go into the temple until the seven plagues brought by the seven angels had come to an end. Reflect The book of Revelation contains many messages for those early Christians who had to suffer or die for their faith. Through this book, they learned that, in spite of the cruel power of the Roman Empire, Jesus, the Lamb of God, would ultimately overcome. In today's passage, the image of the beast likely symbolizes the Roman Empire and its emperors, who insisted on being worshiped as gods. How might today's passage have given hope to the early Christians? Pray Living God, so many people around the world face deep suffering and oppression by those who misuse their power. John's vision celebrates God's victory and describes a wedding feast. Then John sees a rider on a white horse who appears to be a military leader going to war. The rider wears many crowns, symbolizing his authority, and his robe is covered in the blood of sacrifice. Today's Scripture: Revelation 19:6b,7a "Praise God! For the Lord, our Almighty God, is King! Let us rejoice and be glad; let us praise his greatness!" How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a large crowd of people in heaven, saying, Praise God! Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God! 2True and just are his judgments! He has condemned the prostitute who was corrupting the earth with her immorality. God has punished her because she killed his servants. 3Again they shouted, Praise God! The smoke from the flames that consume the great city goes up forever and ever! 4The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. They said, Amen! Praise God! 5Then there came from the throne the sound of a voice, saying, Praise our God, all his servants and all people, both great and small, who have reverence for him! 6Then I heard what sounded like a crowd, like the sound of a roaring waterfall, like loud peals of thunder. I heard them say, Praise God! For the Lord, our Almighty God, is King! 7Let us rejoice and be glad; let us praise his greatness! For the time has come for the wedding of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself for it. 8She has been given clean shining linen to wear. (The linen is the good deeds of God's people.) 9Then the angel said to me, Write this: Happy are those who have been invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb. And the angel added, These are the true words of God. 10I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, Don't do it! I am a servant together with you and with other believers, all those who hold to the truth that Jesus revealed. Worship God! For the truth that Jesus revealed is what inspires the prophets. 11Then I saw heaven open, and there was a white horse. Its rider is called Faithful and True; it is with justice that he judges and fights his battles. 12His eyes were like a flame of fire, and he wore many crowns on his head. He had a name written on him, but no one except himself knows what it is. 13The robe he wore was covered with blood. His name is The Word of God. 14The armies of heaven followed him, riding on white horses and dressed in clean white linen. 15Out of his mouth came a sharp sword, with which he will defeat the nations. He will rule over them with a rod of iron, and he will trample out the wine in the wine press of the furious anger of the Almighty God. 16On his robe and on his thigh was written the name: King of kings and Lord of lords. Reflect Reread 19:5-10. The wedding day of the Lamb is a day of celebration when Christ (the Lamb) and his people (the bride) will be united. It also signals that God is about to defeat evil for all time. Israel's prophets used the idea of marriage as a way to describe the relationship between God and the people of Israel (see Isaiah 54:1-8; Ezekiel 16:7-8; Hosea 2:19-20). In the New Testament, the church is pictured as the wife of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-32). How is the relationship between Christ and the Church like a marriage? Pray Praise the Lord! Thank you God, for the loving relationship between Jesus and the Church. May we fully commit our lives to Christ, trusting that as we give, we will grow in faith and love. Amen. Isaiah says that God's people will be delivered through divine intervention. God is coming to the people through the birth of a child who will one day be their ruler. As promised, Israel's king will come from the family of David, and will rule with justice and peace. Today's Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, "Wonderful Counselor," "Mighty God," "Eternal Father," "Prince of Peace." How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1There will be no way for them to escape from this time of trouble. The Future King The land of the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali was once disgraced, but the future will bring honor to this region, from the Mediterranean eastward to the land on the other side of the Jordan, and even to Galilee itself, where the foreigners live. 2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, but now light is shining on them. 3You have given them great joy, Lord; you have made them happy. They rejoice in what you have done, as people rejoice when they harvest grain or when they divide captured wealth. 4For you have broken the yoke that burdened them and the rod that beat their shoulders. You have defeated the nation that oppressed and exploited your people, just as you defeated the army of Midian long ago. 5The boots of the invading army and all their bloodstained clothing will be destroyed by fire. 6A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7His royal power will continue to grow; his kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David's successor, basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time. The LORD Almighty is determined to do all this. Reflect Judah was in trouble. Assyria had already invaded, robbed and ruined much of Syria and the northern kingdom of Israel, which had broken away from the southern tribes of Judah almost two hundred years earlier. King Ahaz of Judah tried to become friendly with the Assyrian king, but to no avail-Assyria attacked Judah as well. In this passage, Isaiah encourages the king and people of Judah to remain steadfast as they wait for a new ruler. For the people of Judah, this expected ruler may have been Hezekiah. But people of the Christian tradition read this passage with a longer lens and believe Isaiah was predicting the birth of Jesus. What does this passage mean to you? Pray Lord, the light of your love casts out the deepest darkness. Thank you for the ways in which you enter into the world through children. May we know your love by the light that shines through their eyes, that we may remember and celebrate the gift of the true light of the world, Jesus Christ. Amen. Then the focus shifts to events surrounding Jesus' birth. One important event is the birth of John the Baptist, who, as an adult, preaches a message that is intended to get people ready to receive Jesus. Today's Scripture: Luke 1:15 John will be great in the Lord's sight. ... From his very birth, he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1Dear Theophilus: Many people have done their best to write a report of the things that have taken place among us. 2They wrote what we have been told by those who saw these things from the beginning and who proclaimed the message. 3And so, Your Excellency, because I have carefully studied all these matters from their beginning, I thought it would be good to write an orderly account for you. 4I do this so that you will know the full truth about everything which you have been taught. 5During the time when Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife's name was Elizabeth; she also belonged to a priestly family. 6They both lived good lives in God's sight and obeyed fully all the Lord's laws and commands. 7They had no children because Elizabeth could not have any, and she and Zechariah were both very old. 8One day Zechariah was doing his work as a priest in the Temple, taking his turn in the daily service. 9According to the custom followed by the priests, he was chosen by lot to burn incense on the altar. So he went into the Temple of the Lord, 10while the crowd of people outside prayed during the hour when the incense was burned. 11An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar where the incense was burned. 12When Zechariah saw him, he was alarmed and felt afraid. 13But the angel said to him, Don't be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son. You are to name him John. 14How glad and happy you will be, and how happy many others will be when he is born! 15John will be great in the Lord's sight. He must not drink any wine or strong drink. From his very birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, 16and he will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17He will go ahead of the Lord, strong and mighty like the prophet Elijah. He will bring fathers and children together again; he will turn disobedient people back to the way of thinking of the righteous; he will get the Lord's people ready for him. 18Zechariah said to the angel, How shall I know if this is so? I am an old man, and my wife is old also. 19I am Gabriel, the angel answered. I stand in the presence of God, who sent me to speak to you and tell you this good news. 20But you have not believed my message, which will come true at the right time. Because you have not believed, you will be unable to speak; you will remain silent until the day my promise to you comes true. 21In the meantime the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he was spending such a long time in the Temple. 22When he came out, he could not speak to them, and so they knew that he had seen a vision in the Temple. Unable to say a word, he made signs to them with his hands. 23When his period of service in the Temple was over, Zechariah went back home. 24Some time later his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and did not leave the house for five months. 25Now at last the Lord has helped me, she said. He has taken away my public disgrace! Reflect Reread 1:1-4. In this brief introduction, the author of Luke shows that he is aware that others have tried to tell the story about Jesus' miracles and teachings and about how Jesus died and was raised to life. Such stories are called "Gospels," an Old English word that is a translation of the Greek word euangelion, meaning "good news." Why did Luke decide to retell these stories? How do we go about sharing the good news of the birth of Christ today? Pray Prince of Peace, the story of your birth is good news for all people. He will be a great and eternal ruler. Then Mary visits Elizabeth, and they experience the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Mary sings a song of praise, celebrating God's care for those in need. Today's Scripture: Luke 1:46, 47 Mary said, "My heart praises the Lord; my soul is glad because of God my Savior." How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 26In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth. 27He had a message for a young woman promised in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David. Her name was Mary. 28The angel came to her and said, Peace be with you! The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you! 29Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message, and she wondered what his words meant. 30The angel said to her, Don't be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to you. 31You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king, as his ancestor David was, 33and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end! 34Mary said to the angel, I am a virgin. How, then, can this be? 35The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God's power will rest upon you. For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God. 36Remember your relative Elizabeth. It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old. 37For there is nothing that God cannot do. 38I am the Lord's servant, said Mary; may it happen to me as you have said. And the angel left her. 39Soon afterward Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea. 40She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42and said in a loud voice, You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord's mother comes to visit me? 44For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness. 45How happy you are to believe that the Lord's message to you will come true! 46Mary said, My heart praises the Lord; 47my soul is glad because of God my Savior, 48for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me happy, 49because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; 50from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him. 51He has stretched out his mighty arm and scattered the proud with all their plans. 52He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. 53He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with empty hands. 54He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors, and has come to the help of his servant Israel. 55He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham and to all his descendants forever! 56Mary stayed about three months with Elizabeth and then went back home. Reflect Reread 1:46-55. Mary's song is a prayer that praises God and is like the song that Hannah sang when God gave her a son (1 Samuel 2:1-10). Mary's song is also known by some Christians as the Magnificat, which in Latin means "magnify." This song introduces an important theme in Luke: God is a friend of poor people. Which lines in Mary's song are most poignant to you? Why? Pray God, you are indeed all-powerful! You have done great things and your name is holy. In today's passage, the child is born. Instead of naming him after his father, Elizabeth and Zechariah agree that his name is John. Then Zechariah regains his voice. He praises the Lord for fulfilling his promises and offers a vision of what his son would do. Today's Scripture: Luke 1:78 Our God is merciful and tender. He will cause the bright dawn of salvation to rise on us. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 57The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby, and she gave birth to a son. 58Her neighbors and relatives heard how wonderfully good the Lord had been to her, and they all rejoiced with her. 59When the baby was a week old, they came to circumcise him, and they were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. 60But his mother said, No! His name is to be John. 61They said to her, But you don't have any relative with that name! 62Then they made signs to his father, asking him what name he would like the boy to have. 63Zechariah asked for a writing pad and wrote, His name is John. How surprised they all were! 64At that moment Zechariah was able to speak again, and he started praising God. 65The neighbors were all filled with fear, and the news about these things spread through all the hill country of Judea. 66Everyone who heard of it thought about it and asked, What is this child going to be? For it was plain that the Lord's power was upon him. 67John's father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he spoke God's message: 68Let us praise the Lord, the God of Israel! He has come to the help of his people and has set them free. 69He has provided for us a mighty Savior, a descendant of his servant David. 70He promised through his holy prophets long ago 71that he would save us from our enemies, from the power of all those who hate us. 72He said he would show mercy to our ancestors and remember his sacred covenant. 73-74With a solemn oath to our ancestor Abraham he promised to rescue us from our enemies and allow us to serve him without fear, 75so that we might be holy and righteous before him all the days of our life. 76You, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his road for him, 77to tell his people that they will be saved by having their sins forgiven. 78Our God is merciful and tender. He will cause the bright dawn of salvation to rise on us 79and to shine from heaven on all those who live in the dark shadow of death, to guide our steps into the path of peace. 80The child grew and developed in body and spirit. He lived in the desert until the day when he appeared publicly to the people of Israel. Reflect When Zechariah first learns that Elizabeth will have a baby, he can hardly believe it. Amid his doubt, he loses his voice. At the circumcision of his baby John, Zechariah's voice is restored and he proclaims a new vision of hope for the fulfillment of God's promises. What did it mean for Zechariah to lose and recover his voice? What connections does this story have to your life? Pray Holy God, there are times when I fail to recognize your promises and sing your praises. Help me find my voice, that I may speak your word and sing of your glory. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 25, 2009 Author Members Posted December 25, 2009 Luke 2:1-20(Good News Translation) Thursday December 24, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Luke 2:1-20: Today's passage recounts the story of the birth of Jesus. The emperor of Rome orders people to return to their hometowns to be counted in a census. Mary and Joseph must to return to Joseph's hometown of Bethlehem, even though she is pregnant. She gives birth there in Bethlehem, laying the baby in a manger because there is no room for them in the local inn. That night, shepherds in fields nearby encounter an angel who tells them that a Savior has been born. The shepherds rush to Bethlehem, where they meet Mary, Joseph and the baby. They tell Mary and Joseph what the angel said, and everyone wonders what it means. Today's Scripture: Luke 2:11 This very day in David's town your Savior was born - Christ the Lord! How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria. 3Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown. 4Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. 5He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant, 6and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. 7She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger—there was no room for them to stay in the inn. 8There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, 10but the angel said to them, Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. 11This very day in David's town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord! 12And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. 13Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: 14Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased! 15When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us. 16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger. 17When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. 18All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said. 19Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them. 20The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them. Reflect Imagine traveling for miles by donkey while nine months pregnant, then giving birth to your first child without so much as a bed on which to lie. Mary's birth of Jesus was an act of perseverance, strength, and courage. Birth is a painful struggle under the best of circumstances; Mary brought a Savior into the world under the most difficult of conditions. Bringing Jesus into the world was not easy then, and it is not easy now. Yet God provides the strength and courage we need to make Jesus present in the world today. How is God calling you to bring Christ into a needy world? Pray Glorious God, tonight we remember the night so many years ago when you entered into the world as a baby. Inspire me anew to bring Christ into the world today, sharing the good news of your grace and love through him. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 25, 2009 Author Members Posted December 25, 2009 John 1:1-18(Good News Translation) Friday December 25, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction John 1:1-18: The first chapter of John describes who Jesus is. An opening hymn identifies Jesus as the Word of God in human form. The Word was present with God when God created and gave life to everything. This Word became human so people could see what God is really like. John the Baptist proclaims that he is indeed the "real light" - the Messiah and the Son of God. Today's Scripture: John 1:14a The Word became a human being and, full of grace and truth, lived among us. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 1In the beginning the Word already existed; the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2From the very beginning the Word was with God. 3Through him God made all things; not one thing in all creation was made without him. 4The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out. 6God sent his messenger, a man named John, 7who came to tell people about the light, so that all should hear the message and believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came to tell about the light. 9This was the real light—the light that comes into the world and shines on all people. 10The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through him, yet the world did not recognize him. 11He came to his own country, but his own people did not receive him. 12Some, however, did receive him and believed in him; so he gave them the right to become God's children. 13They did not become God's children by natural means, that is, by being born as the children of a human father; God himself was their Father. 14The Word became a human being and, full of grace and truth, lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father's only Son. 15John spoke about him. He cried out, This is the one I was talking about when I said, He comes after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born. 16Out of the fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another. 17God gave the Law through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is the same as God and is at the Father's side, he has made him known. Reflect Reread 1:1-3. This same phrase is used at the very beginning of Genesis 1, which describes how God created all things. The Greek word logos translated here as "Word" also means "reason" or "purpose." In the Jewish Scriptures (Old Testament), God used Wisdom to create the world (Proverbs 8:22-31). The Word also shows God's power, a power that was able to create simply by speaking." In today's passage, the Word refers to Jesus Christ, who brings God's message to all people and reveals God's power and purpose. What might this Word offer for people living today? Pray Living Word, by God's grace you entered into the world, revealing God's glory in new ways. Through Jesus Christ, we have experienced your undeserved kindness and truth. May your light shine through me, that I may be a vessel of God's grace and peace. Thank you for your love. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 26, 2009 Author Members Posted December 26, 2009 Luke 2:21-40(Good News Translation) Saturday December 26, 2009 Called to be Free to Spread Tidings of Joy Introduction Luke 2:21-40: Mary's baby is circumcised and named Jesus. When the time comes for Jesus to be presented at the Temple, Simeon offers a prayer of prophecy that alludes to the salvation that will come through Christ. He tells Mary that she will suffer as Jesus is rejected. Then Anna prophesizes about Jesus, praising God for the hope that Jerusalem will be set free. After the rituals are completed, Joseph and Mary return home to Nazareth, where Jesus grows up. Today's Scripture: Luke 2:30, 31 With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples. How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today? Today's Reading 21A week later, when the time came for the baby to be circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he had been conceived. 22The time came for Joseph and Mary to perform the ceremony of purification, as the Law of Moses commanded. So they took the child to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, 23as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every first-born male is to be dedicated to the Lord. 24They also went to offer a sacrifice of a pair of doves or two young pigeons, as required by the law of the Lord. 25At that time there was a man named Simeon living in Jerusalem. He was a good, God-fearing man and was waiting for Israel to be saved. The Holy Spirit was with him 26and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah. 27Led by the Spirit, Simeon went into the Temple. When the parents brought the child Jesus into the Temple to do for him what the Law required, 28Simeon took the child in his arms and gave thanks to God: 29Now, Lord, you have kept your promise, and you may let your servant go in peace. 30With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: 32A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles and bring glory to your people Israel. 33The child's father and mother were amazed at the things Simeon said about him. 34Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, This child is chosen by God for the destruction and the salvation of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God which many people will speak against 35and so reveal their secret thoughts. And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart. 36-37There was a very old prophet, a widow named Anna, daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She had been married for only seven years and was now eighty-four years old. She never left the Temple; day and night she worshiped God, fasting and praying. 38That very same hour she arrived and gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were waiting for God to set Jerusalem free. 39When Joseph and Mary had finished doing all that was required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to their hometown of Nazareth in Galilee. 40The child grew and became strong; he was full of wisdom, and God's blessings were upon him. Reflect Luke is the only one of the four Gospels that tells about Jesus' childhood or youth. What might Jesus have been like as a child? What might he have done for fun? Do you think his parents ever had to discipline him? How do you think he was like or different from other children? Pray Loving God, thank you for the child Jesus, who lived and laughed and played among children. Bless all the children of the world that they may come to know your love through the baby Jesus. Amen.
