Luke 7:36-50(Good News Translation)

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 7:36-50: Jesus goes to a Pharisee's home for dinner. A sinful woman arrives, cries at Jesus' feet, dries his feet with her hair, and pours perfume on them. The Pharisee thinks that Jesus is not a prophet because he is allowing the woman to touch him. Jesus tells him a parable about forgiveness and then forgives her sins.

Today's Scripture: Luke 7:50

Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

36A Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him, and Jesus went to his house and sat down to eat. 37In that town was a woman who lived a sinful life. She heard that Jesus was eating in the Pharisee's house, so she brought an alabaster jar full of perfume 38and stood behind Jesus, by his feet, crying and wetting his feet with her tears. Then she dried his feet with her hair, kissed them, and poured the perfume on them. 39When the Pharisee saw this, he said to himself, “If this man really were a prophet, he would know who this woman is who is touching him; he would know what kind of sinful life she lives!” 40Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Yes, Teacher,” he said, “tell me.” 41“There were two men who owed money to a moneylender,” Jesus began. One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other owed him fifty. 42Neither of them could pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Which one, then, will love him more? 43“I suppose,” answered Simon, “that it would be the one who was forgiven more.” “You are right,” said Jesus. 44Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I came into your home, and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45You did not welcome me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing my feet since I came. 46You provided no olive oil for my head, but she has covered my feet with perfume. 47I tell you, then, the great love she has shown proves that her many sins have been forgiven. But whoever has been forgiven little shows only a little love. 48Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49The others sitting at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50But Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Reflect

The Jewish people believed that it was very important to show hospitality to guests. Since most people wore open sandals, guests in a home were usually offered water so they could wash their feet. Guests were also greeted with a kiss on the cheek and often had olive oil poured on their heads. Why do you think hospitality was important to Jesus? What is the meaning of the parable he told?

Pray

Dear Jesus, too often I fail to welcome the stranger in my midst, thereby failing to welcome you. Forgive me for the times when I have shunned others, and open my heart to those in need of your grace. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 9:1-17: Jesus gives his disciples power and sends them out to preach and heal. He instructs them on how to behave, and they go through all the villages preaching the Good News. Herod hears what is happening and gets worried about who Jesus is and what his actions mean. When the apostles return, crowds gather with them. Jesus feeds five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish.

Today's Scripture: Luke 9:2

Then he sent them out to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1Jesus called the twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases. 2Then he sent them out to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick, 3after saying to them, Take nothing with you for the trip: no walking stick, no beggar's bag, no food, no money, not even an extra shirt. 4Wherever you are welcomed, stay in the same house until you leave that town; 5wherever people don't welcome you, leave that town and shake the dust off your feet as a warning to them. 6The disciples left and traveled through all the villages, preaching the Good News and healing people everywhere. 7When Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about all the things that were happening, he was very confused, because some people were saying that John the Baptist had come back to life. 8Others were saying that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. 9Herod said, “I had John's head cut off; but who is this man I hear these things about?” And he kept trying to see Jesus. 10The apostles came back and told Jesus everything they had done. He took them with him, and they went off by themselves to a town named Bethsaida. 11When the crowds heard about it, they followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about the Kingdom of God, and healed those who needed it. 12When the sun was beginning to set, the twelve disciples came to him and said, “Send the people away so that they can go to the villages and farms around here and find food and lodging, because this is a lonely place.” 13But Jesus said to them, “You yourselves give them something to eat.” They answered, “All we have are five loaves and two fish. Do you want us to go and buy food for this whole crowd?” 14(There were about five thousand men there.) Jesus said to his disciples, “Make the people sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15After the disciples had done so, 16Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, thanked God for them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17They all ate and had enough, and the disciples took up twelve baskets of what was left over.

Reflect

What instructions does Jesus give to his disciples? How do you think these instructions might be helpful in evangelism today? Why did people follow Jesus to Bethsaida? How did Jesus respond? How can his actions help inform those working in evangelism?

Pray

Lord Jesus, you have taught us to share the Good News both through word and action. Empower me with your Holy Spirit to be an agent of your love and grace for others. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

John 17:1-26: Jesus prays, calling for God to bring him glory, that he may give eternal life to all who believe in him. He says that he has shown his followers what God is like. Then he prays for the unity of the church and prays for the safety of his followers. He prays for all people to be one with each other and one with Jesus and God. This unity will help convince the world that Jesus really did come from God.

Today's Scripture: John 17:21b

May they be one, so that the world will believe that you sent me.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1After Jesus finished saying this, he looked up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your Son, so that the Son may give glory to you. 2For you gave him authority over all people, so that he might give eternal life to all those you gave him. 3And eternal life means to know you, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ, whom you sent. 4I have shown your glory on earth; I have finished the work you gave me to do. 5Father! Give me glory in your presence now, the same glory I had with you before the world was made. 6I have made you known to those you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me. They have obeyed your word, 7and now they know that everything you gave me comes from you. 8I gave them the message that you gave me, and they received it; they know that it is true that I came from you, and they believe that you sent me. 9I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those you gave me, for they belong to you. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine; and my glory is shown through them. 11And now I am coming to you; I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world. Holy Father! Keep them safe by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one just as you and I are one. 12While I was with them, I kept them safe by the power of your name, the name you gave me. I protected them, and not one of them was lost, except the man who was bound to be lost—so that the scripture might come true. 13And now I am coming to you, and I say these things in the world so that they might have my joy in their hearts in all its fullness. 14I gave them your message, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15I do not ask you to take them out of the world, but I do ask you to keep them safe from the Evil One. 16Just as I do not belong to the world, they do not belong to the world. 17Dedicate them to yourself by means of the truth; your word is truth. 18I sent them into the world, just as you sent me into the world. 19And for their sake I dedicate myself to you, in order that they, too, may be truly dedicated to you. 20I pray not only for them, but also for those who believe in me because of their message. 21I pray that they may all be one. Father! May they be in us, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they be one, so that the world will believe that you sent me. 22I gave them the same glory you gave me, so that they may be one, just as you and I are one: 23I in them and you in me, so that they may be completely one, in order that the world may know that you sent me and that you love them as you love me. 24Father! You have given them to me, and I want them to be with me where I am, so that they may see my glory, the glory you gave me; for you loved me before the world was made. 25Righteous Father! The world does not know you, but I know you, and these know that you sent me. 26I made you known to them, and I will continue to do so, in order that the love you have for me may be in them, and so that I also may be in them.

Reflect

Today is Ecumenical Sunday, a day when Christian churches recognize ecumenism-the goal of Christian unity. Today's text is one of several that indicates that God's ultimate vision is for all churches to be united in faith. What does the idea of Christian unity mean to you? What interferes with Christian unity?

Pray

Lord, may your church indeed be one in Christ, that the world may know that you sent Jesus and that you love the world as you love him. May your love surround all people as they join together in relationship with you. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 9:18-36: Jesus wants to make it clear to his disciples who he is and what he must do. Peter, John, and James get to see Jesus' true glory as he appears to be speaking with Moses and Elijah on the mountaintop. They hear God identify Jesus as "my Son, whom I have chosen."

Today's Scripture: Luke 9:20b

Peter answered, "You are God's Messiah."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

18One day when Jesus was praying alone, the disciples came to him. “Who do the crowds say I am?” he asked them. 19“Some say that you are John the Baptist,” they answered. “Others say that you are Elijah, while others say that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” 20“What about you?” he asked them. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are God's Messiah.” 21Then Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell this to anyone. 22He also told them, “The Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. He will be put to death, but three days later he will be raised to life.” 23And he said to them all, If you want to come with me, you must forget yourself, take up your cross every day, and follow me. 24For if you want to save your own life, you will lose it, but if you lose your life for my sake, you will save it. 25Will you gain anything if you win the whole world but are yourself lost or defeated? Of course not! 26If you are ashamed of me and of my teaching, then the Son of Man will be ashamed of you when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27I assure you that there are some here who will not die until they have seen the Kingdom of God. 28About a week after he had said these things, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him and went up a hill to pray. 29While he was praying, his face changed its appearance, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30Suddenly two men were there talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah, 31who appeared in heavenly glory and talked with Jesus about the way in which he would soon fulfill God's purpose by dying in Jerusalem. 32Peter and his companions were sound asleep, but they woke up and saw Jesus' glory and the two men who were standing with him. 33As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, how good it is that we are here! We will make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not really know what he was saying.) 34While he was still speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them with its shadow; and the disciples were afraid as the cloud came over them. 35A voice said from the cloud, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen—listen to him!” 36When the voice stopped, there was Jesus all alone. The disciples kept quiet about all this and told no one at that time anything they had seen.

Reflect

The event on the mountaintop in today's passage is known as The Transfiguration. Transfiguration refers to a change in appearance to a more beautiful or spiritual state. In Jesus' transfiguration, the disciples were able to catch a glimpse of his divinity. How was Jesus transfigured in this story? What do you think was the significance of the appearance of Moses and Elijah?

Pray

Lord Jesus, as you surprised your disciples with a glimpse of your glory on the mountaintop, surprise me with a glimpse of your presence. May I recognize you working in my life today. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 9:37-62: The day after The Transfiguration, Jesus is asked to heal a boy with a spirit that attacks him. Jesus responds with frustration over the people's lack of faith and then heals the boy. Then he speaks to the disciples in cryptic language about his death, and gives further teachings. He challenges people to make sacrifices in order to follow him.

Today's Scripture: Luke 9:43

All the people were amazed at the mighty power of God.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

37The next day Jesus and the three disciples went down from the hill, and a large crowd met Jesus. 38A man shouted from the crowd, Teacher! I beg you, look at my son—my only son! 39A spirit attacks him with a sudden shout and throws him into a fit, so that he foams at the mouth; it keeps on hurting him and will hardly let him go! 40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't. 41Jesus answered, “How unbelieving and wrong you people are! How long must I stay with you? How long do I have to put up with you?” Then he said to the man, “Bring your son here.” 42As the boy was coming, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a fit. Jesus gave a command to the evil spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43All the people were amazed at the mighty power of God. The people were still marveling at everything Jesus was doing, when he said to his disciples, 44“Don't forget what I am about to tell you! The Son of Man is going to be handed over to the power of human beings.” 45But the disciples did not know what this meant. It had been hidden from them so that they could not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about the matter. 46An argument broke out among the disciples as to which one of them was the greatest. 47Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he took a child, stood him by his side, 48and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, also welcomes the one who sent me. For the one who is least among you all is the greatest.” 49John spoke up, “Master, we saw a man driving out demons in your name, and we told him to stop, because he doesn't belong to our group.” 50“Do not try to stop him,” Jesus said to him and to the other disciples, “because whoever is not against you is for you.” 51As the time drew near when Jesus would be taken up to heaven, he made up his mind and set out on his way to Jerusalem. 52He sent messengers ahead of him, who went into a village in Samaria to get everything ready for him. 53But the people there would not receive him, because it was clear that he was on his way to Jerusalem. 54When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56Then Jesus and his disciples went on to another village. 57As they went on their way, a man said to Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lie down and rest.” 59He said to another man, “Follow me.” But that man said, “Sir, first let me go back and bury my father.” 60Jesus answered, “Let the dead bury their own dead. You go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.” 61Someone else said, “I will follow you, sir; but first let me go and say good-bye to my family.” 62Jesus said to him, “Anyone who starts to plow and then keeps looking back is of no use for the Kingdom of God.”

Reflect

Reread 9:46-62. Jesus offers a number of challenging teachings in this passage. Which teaching is most challenging to you? Which teachings do you need help to understand? Are there any teachings that you can apply to your life this week?

Pray

Holy Lord, help me to welcome you by welcoming the most vulnerable among us. Make me a true disciple in thought, word, and action that I may share the good news of your love with others. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 10:1-24: Jesus chooses seventy-two followers, sending them out two by two to every town and village where he planned to go. He says that those who see miracles but fail to repent will receive God's judgment. When the followers return, they report that evil spirits obeyed them. Jesus prays, thanking God for revealing the good news to ordinary people.

Today's Scripture: Luke 10:16

Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1After this the Lord chose another seventy-two men and sent them out two by two, to go ahead of him to every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2He said to them, There is a large harvest, but few workers to gather it in. Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest. 3Go! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. 4Don't take a purse or a beggar's bag or shoes; don't stop to greet anyone on the road. 5Whenever you go into a house, first say, “Peace be with this house.” 6If someone who is peace-loving lives there, let your greeting of peace remain on that person; if not, take back your greeting of peace. 7Stay in that same house, eating and drinking whatever they offer you, for workers should be given their pay. Don't move around from one house to another. 8Whenever you go into a town and are made welcome, eat what is set before you, 9heal the sick in that town, and say to the people there, “The Kingdom of God has come near you.” 10But whenever you go into a town and are not welcomed, go out in the streets and say, 11“Even the dust from your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. But remember that the Kingdom of God has come near you!” 12I assure you that on the Judgment Day God will show more mercy to Sodom than to that town! 13How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible for you too, Bethsaida! If the miracles which were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, the people there would have long ago sat down, put on sackcloth, and sprinkled ashes on themselves, to show that they had turned from their sins! 14God will show more mercy on the Judgment Day to Tyre and Sidon than to you. 15And as for you, Capernaum! Did you want to lift yourself up to heaven? You will be thrown down to hell! 16Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” 17The seventy-two men came back in great joy. “Lord,” they said, “even the demons obeyed us when we gave them a command in your name!” 18Jesus answered them, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19Listen! I have given you authority, so that you can walk on snakes and scorpions and overcome all the power of the Enemy, and nothing will hurt you. 20But don't be glad because the evil spirits obey you; rather be glad because your names are written in heaven. 21At that time Jesus was filled with joy by the Holy Spirit and said, Father, Lord of heaven and earth! I thank you because you have shown to the unlearned what you have hidden from the wise and learned. Yes, Father, this was how you were pleased to have it happen. 22“My Father has given me all things. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 23Then Jesus turned to the disciples and said to them privately, How fortunate you are to see the things you see! 24I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, but they could not, and to hear what you hear, but they did not.

Reflect

Reread 10:13. Sackcloth is a dark cloth made of camel's hair or goat's hair. The Greek word for "ashes" in this verse refers to a kind of smoky soot. People wore sackcloth or put ashes on their head in times of deep sadness or when they wanted to show they were sorry for their sins. How do people show they are sorry for the ways in which they turn away from God today?

Pray

Holy and Loving God, forgive me for the times when I fail to live according to your will. Too often I focus on my own selfish desires rather than setting my sights on your way. I'm sorry. Help me turn away from my mistakes, that I may claim new life in you. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 8:19-39: This passage begins with Jesus offering a new teaching on how family is to be defined. Then he and his disciples go out in a boat. Jesus calms a windstorm, then challenges his disciples over their faith. He casts demons out of a man and into a herd of pigs. The pigs rush down a hillside to their death. The people who hear about it are afraid and beg Jesus to leave town.

Today's Scripture: Luke 8:21

Jesus said to them all, "My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and obey it."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

19Jesus' mother and brothers came to him, but were unable to join him because of the crowd. 20Someone said to Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.” 21Jesus said to them all, “My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” 22One day Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they started out. 23As they were sailing, Jesus fell asleep. Suddenly a strong wind blew down on the lake, and the boat began to fill with water, so that they were all in great danger. 24The disciples went to Jesus and woke him up, saying, “Master, Master! We are about to die!” Jesus got up and gave an order to the wind and to the stormy water; they quieted down, and there was a great calm. 25Then he said to the disciples, “Where is your faith?” But they were amazed and afraid, and said to one another, “Who is this man? He gives orders to the winds and waves, and they obey him!” 26Jesus and his disciples sailed on over to the territory of Gerasa, which is across the lake from Galilee. 27As Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a man from the town who had demons in him. For a long time this man had gone without clothes and would not stay at home, but spent his time in the burial caves. 28When he saw Jesus, he gave a loud cry, threw himself down at his feet, and shouted, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God! What do you want with me? I beg you, don't punish me!” 29He said this because Jesus had ordered the evil spirit to go out of him. Many times it had seized him, and even though he was kept a prisoner, his hands and feet tied with chains, he would break the chains and be driven by the demon out into the desert. 30Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is “Mob,” ” he answered—because many demons had gone into him. 31The demons begged Jesus not to send them into the abyss. 32There was a large herd of pigs near by, feeding on a hillside. So the demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he let them. 33They went out of the man and into the pigs. The whole herd rushed down the side of the cliff into the lake and was drowned. 34The men who had been taking care of the pigs saw what happened, so they ran off and spread the news in the town and among the farms. 35People went out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were all afraid. 36Those who had seen it told the people how the man had been cured. 37Then all the people from that territory asked Jesus to go away, because they were terribly afraid. So Jesus got into the boat and left. 38The man from whom the demons had gone out begged Jesus, “Let me go with you.” But Jesus sent him away, saying, 39“Go back home and tell what God has done for you.” The man went through the town, telling what Jesus had done for him.

Reflect

What happens when the disciples in the boat realize Jesus is asleep when a storm is at hand? What do they say? How does Jesus respond to them? Why do you think that he responds the way that he does? What do you think Jesus wanted them to do instead?

Pray

Lord Jesus, when you speak, even the wind and the waves obey you. May I understand and recognize the power of your word as I hope for your promise and trust in your presence. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 8:40-56: When Jesus returns, a man named Jarius asks him to heal his dying daughter. When Jesus is on his way, a sick woman touches him and is healed by the power he releases. He commends the woman for her faith. Then he goes to see the girl, who by now is presumed dead. Jesus says she is simply sleeping and awakens her. He tells the people gathered not to tell anyone what has happened.

Today's Scripture: Luke 8:48

Jesus said to her, "My daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

40When Jesus returned to the other side of the lake, the people welcomed him, because they had all been waiting for him. 41Then a man named Jairus arrived; he was an official in the local synagogue. He threw himself down at Jesus' feet and begged him to go to his home, 42because his only daughter, who was twelve years old, was dying. As Jesus went along, the people were crowding him from every side. 43Among them was a woman who had suffered from severe bleeding for twelve years; she had spent all she had on doctors, but no one had been able to cure her. 44She came up in the crowd behind Jesus and touched the edge of his cloak, and her bleeding stopped at once. 45Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, the people are all around you and crowding in on you.” 46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I knew it when power went out of me.” 47The woman saw that she had been found out, so she came trembling and threw herself at Jesus' feet. There in front of everybody, she told him why she had touched him and how she had been healed at once. 48Jesus said to her, “My daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” 49While Jesus was saying this, a messenger came from the official's house. “Your daughter has died,” he told Jairus; “don't bother the Teacher any longer.” 50But Jesus heard it and said to Jairus, “Don't be afraid; only believe, and she will be well.” 51When he arrived at the house, he would not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother. 52Everyone there was crying and mourning for the child. Jesus said, “Don't cry; the child is not dead—she is only sleeping!” 53They all made fun of him, because they knew that she was dead. 54But Jesus took her by the hand and called out, “Get up, child!” 55Her life returned, and she got up at once, and Jesus ordered them to give her something to eat. 56Her parents were astounded, but Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone what had happened.

Reflect

In New Testament times, there were physicians who helped people when they were sick or injured. Though they had many skills, their knowledge of what caused diseases was limited. They often believed demons caused illnesses because they didn't understand viruses and bacteria. What do the stories of Jesus' healing mean to you? Do you know anyone who has had an experience of healing? How can prayer work with modern medicine?

Pray

Healing God, may all who are suffering and sick know the power of your healing mercy and grace. Strengthen the spirits of those who are ill, and bless the hands of those who care for them. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 18:15-30: Jesus blesses little children, saying that one must enter God's kingdom like a child. Then he speaks with a rich man who asks what he must do to receive eternal life. Jesus responds by telling him that he must sell all he owns and give the money to the poor. The man goes away dejected.

Today's Scripture: Luke 18:17

Jesus said: "Remember this! Whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

15Some people brought their babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. The disciples saw them and scolded them for doing so, 16but Jesus called the children to him and said, Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17Remember this! Whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it. 18A Jewish leader asked Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?” 19“Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. No one is good except God alone. 20You know the commandments: “Do not commit adultery; do not commit murder; do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely; respect your father and your mother.” 21The man replied, “Ever since I was young, I have obeyed all these commandments.” 22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “There is still one more thing you need to do. Sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.” 23But when the man heard this, he became very sad, because he was very rich. 24Jesus saw that he was sad and said, How hard it is for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God! 25It is much harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. 26The people who heard him asked, “Who, then, can be saved?” 27Jesus answered, “What is humanly impossible is possible for God.” 28Then Peter said, “Look! We have left our homes to follow you.” 29“Yes,” Jesus said to them, and I assure you that anyone who leaves home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the Kingdom of God 30will receive much more in this present age and eternal life in the age to come.

Reflect

Today's story is one of Jesus' many statements about the accumulation of wealth and possessions. Why do we find it so difficult to give away the things we have? What is the relationship between wealth and power? Can the power that comes with wealth be used to further God's kingdom? How?

Pray

Lord God, so often I feel like I don't have as much as I need or as much as I want, yet you call me to share your resources freely. Help me to share with others as an expression of my trust in you. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Luke 19:1-10: Today's reading is a story of healing and salvation. Zacchaeus, a tax collector, welcomes Jesus into his home, despite the grumblings of others. Through the encounter, Zacchaeus is transformed, and Jesus forgives him.

Today's Scripture: Luke 19:10

"The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1Jesus went on into Jericho and was passing through. 2There was a chief tax collector there named Zacchaeus, who was rich. 3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was a little man and could not see Jesus because of the crowd. 4So he ran ahead of the crowd and climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus, who was going to pass that way. 5When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and said to Zacchaeus, “Hurry down, Zacchaeus, because I must stay in your house today.” 6Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed him with great joy. 7All the people who saw it started grumbling, “This man has gone as a guest to the home of a sinner!” 8Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Listen, sir! I will give half my belongings to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will pay back four times as much.” 9Jesus said to him, Salvation has come to this house today, for this man, also, is a descendant of Abraham. 10The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

Reflect

What is the role of faith this story? Where do you see healing? Where do you see salvation? Why do people grumble about Jesus helping Zacchaeus? Are there people who are undeserving of God's grace in the world? Why or why not? How does Jesus "seek and save the lost" (19:10)?

Pray

Lord Jesus, you extend your healing grace and salvation beyond the limits of my understanding. Open my mind and heart, that I may share your abundant blessings with those most in need of your love. Amen.

Acts 9:1-25(Good News Translation)

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Acts 9:1-25: Today we begin reading from the book of Acts. Acts begins where Luke ended, telling the story of Jesus' ascension and following the story of the birth and growth of the Church. In today's passage, Saul, a faithful follower of the Law of Moses, is on his way to make trouble for those who had accepted the Lord's way in Damascus. But Jesus stops him on the road and chooses him to preach the good news.

Today's Scripture: Acts 9:20

He went straight to the synagogues and began to preach that Jesus was the Son of God.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1In the meantime Saul kept up his violent threats of murder against the followers of the Lord. He went to the High Priest 2and asked for letters of introduction to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he should find there any followers of the Way of the Lord, he would be able to arrest them, both men and women, and bring them back to Jerusalem. 3As Saul was coming near the city of Damascus, suddenly a light from the sky flashed around him. 4He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why do you persecute me?” 5“Who are you, Lord?” he asked. “I am Jesus, whom you persecute,” the voice said. 6“But get up and go into the city, where you will be told what you must do.” 7The men who were traveling with Saul had stopped, not saying a word; they heard the voice but could not see anyone. 8Saul got up from the ground and opened his eyes, but could not see a thing. So they took him by the hand and led him into Damascus. 9For three days he was not able to see, and during that time he did not eat or drink anything. 10There was a believer in Damascus named Ananias. He had a vision, in which the Lord said to him, “Ananias!” “Here I am, Lord,” he answered. 11The Lord said to him, Get ready and go to Straight Street, and at the house of Judas ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying, 12and in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come in and place his hands on him so that he might see again. 13Ananias answered, Lord, many people have told me about this man and about all the terrible things he has done to your people in Jerusalem. 14And he has come to Damascus with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who worship you. 15The Lord said to him, Go, because I have chosen him to serve me, to make my name known to Gentiles and kings and to the people of Israel. 16And I myself will show him all that he must suffer for my sake. 17So Ananias went, entered the house where Saul was, and placed his hands on him. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord has sent me—Jesus himself, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here. He sent me so that you might see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18At once something like fish scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he was able to see again. He stood up and was baptized; 19and after he had eaten, his strength came back. Saul stayed for a few days with the believers in Damascus. 20He went straight to the synagogues and began to preach that Jesus was the Son of God. 21All who heard him were amazed and asked, “Isn't he the one who in Jerusalem was killing those who worship that man Jesus? And didn't he come here for the very purpose of arresting those people and taking them back to the chief priests?” 22But Saul's preaching became even more powerful, and his proofs that Jesus was the Messiah were so convincing that the Jews who lived in Damascus could not answer him. 23After many days had gone by, the Jews met together and made plans to kill Saul, 24but he was told of their plan. Day and night they watched the city gates in order to kill him. 25But one night Saul's followers took him and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket.

Reflect

Blindness and sight are biblical metaphors used to talk about the experience of deepening one's understanding of Jesus (see also Luke 18:35-43; John 9:1-41). Have you ever had an experience of "seeing" the light of Christ in a new way? What was it like?

Pray

Lord Jesus, there are many ways to know you. Provoke me to experience your presence anew, that I may be a witness to your renewing spirit, bringing your light to those who most need it. Amen.

Colossians 1:1-23(Good News Translation)

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Colossians 1:1-23: Today we begin Paul's letter to the people in Colossae. He greets them and gives thanks to God for all the good things he keeps hearing about the Colossian Christians. He prays that they will honor the Lord and stay deeply rooted in their faith in Christ. Verses 15-20 are probably an early Christian hymn that describes who Jesus is and what he has done.

Today's Scripture: Colossians 1:12

With joy give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to have your share of what God has reserved for his people in the kingdom of light.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1From Paul, who by God's will is an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy— 2To God's people in Colossae, who are our faithful friends in union with Christ: May God our Father give you grace and peace. 3We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you. 4For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all God's people. 5When the true message, the Good News, first came to you, you heard about the hope it offers. So your faith and love are based on what you hope for, which is kept safe for you in heaven. 6The gospel keeps bringing blessings and is spreading throughout the world, just as it has among you ever since the day you first heard about the grace of God and came to know it as it really is. 7You learned of God's grace from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is Christ's faithful worker on our behalf. 8He has told us of the love that the Spirit has given you. 9For this reason we have always prayed for you, ever since we heard about you. We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will, with all the wisdom and understanding that his Spirit gives. 10Then you will be able to live as the Lord wants and will always do what pleases him. Your lives will produce all kinds of good deeds, and you will grow in your knowledge of God. 11-12May you be made strong with all the strength which comes from his glorious power, so that you may be able to endure everything with patience. And with joy give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to have your share of what God has reserved for his people in the kingdom of light. 13He rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us safe into the kingdom of his dear Son, 14by whom we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven. 15Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the first-born Son, superior to all created things. 16For through him God created everything in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen things, including spiritual powers, lords, rulers, and authorities. God created the whole universe through him and for him. 17Christ existed before all things, and in union with him all things have their proper place. 18He is the head of his body, the church; he is the source of the body's life. He is the first-born Son, who was raised from death, in order that he alone might have the first place in all things. 19For it was by God's own decision that the Son has in himself the full nature of God. 20Through the Son, then, God decided to bring the whole universe back to himself. God made peace through his Son's blood on the cross and so brought back to himself all things, both on earth and in heaven. 21At one time you were far away from God and were his enemies because of the evil things you did and thought. 22But now, by means of the physical death of his Son, God has made you his friends, in order to bring you, holy, pure, and faultless, into his presence. 23You must, of course, continue faithful on a firm and sure foundation, and must not allow yourselves to be shaken from the hope you gained when you heard the gospel. It is of this gospel that I, Paul, became a servant—this gospel which has been preached to everybody in the world.

Reflect

What does Paul pray for concerning the Colossians? What does it mean to "live as the Lord wants" (verse 10)? List the key points of the hymn in 1:15-1:20. Choose one point and consider what it means to you.

Pray

Holy and Loving God, make your communities of faith strong, that they may be able to endure their challenges with faith and patience. Help them to grow strong in their knowledge of you, that they may more fully experience the grace of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Acts 10:1-33: Peter experiences a vision telling him that God doesn't think anyone is unclean or unfit. Meanwhile, Cornelius, a Gentile, has a vision in which an angel invites him to send men to see Peter. The two ultimately meet and share their stories.

Today's Scripture: Acts 10:1-33

The voice spoke to him again, "Do not consider anything unclean that God has declared clean."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1There was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, who was a captain in the Roman army regiment called “The Italian Regiment.” 2He was a religious man; he and his whole family worshiped God. He also did much to help the Jewish poor people and was constantly praying to God. 3It was about three o'clock one afternoon when he had a vision, in which he clearly saw an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius!” 4He stared at the angel in fear and said, “What is it, sir?” The angel answered, God is pleased with your prayers and works of charity, and is ready to answer you. 5And now send some men to Joppa for a certain man whose full name is Simon Peter. 6He is a guest in the home of a tanner of leather named Simon, who lives by the sea. 7Then the angel went away, and Cornelius called two of his house servants and a soldier, a religious man who was one of his personal attendants. 8He told them what had happened and sent them off to Joppa. 9The next day, as they were on their way and coming near Joppa, Peter went up on the roof of the house about noon in order to pray. 10He became hungry and wanted something to eat; while the food was being prepared, he had a vision. 11He saw heaven opened and something coming down that looked like a large sheet being lowered by its four corners to the earth. 12In it were all kinds of animals, reptiles, and wild birds. 13A voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat!” 14But Peter said, “Certainly not, Lord! I have never eaten anything ritually unclean or defiled.” 15The voice spoke to him again, “Do not consider anything unclean that God has declared clean.” 16This happened three times, and then the thing was taken back up into heaven. 17While Peter was wondering about the meaning of this vision, the men sent by Cornelius had learned where Simon's house was, and they were now standing in front of the gate. 18They called out and asked, “Is there a guest here by the name of Simon Peter?” 19Peter was still trying to understand what the vision meant, when the Spirit said, Listen! Three men are here looking for you. 20So get ready and go down, and do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them. 21So Peter went down and said to the men, “I am the man you are looking for. Why have you come?” 22“Captain Cornelius sent us,” they answered. “He is a good man who worships God and is highly respected by all the Jewish people. An angel of God told him to invite you to his house, so that he could hear what you have to say.” 23Peter invited the men in and had them spend the night there. The next day he got ready and went with them; and some of the believers from Joppa went along with him. 24The following day he arrived in Caesarea, where Cornelius was waiting for him, together with relatives and close friends that he had invited. 25As Peter was about to go in, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and bowed down before him. 26But Peter made him rise. “Stand up,” he said, “I myself am only a man.” 27Peter kept on talking to Cornelius as he went into the house, where he found many people gathered. 28He said to them, You yourselves know very well that a Jew is not allowed by his religion to visit or associate with Gentiles. But God has shown me that I must not consider any person ritually unclean or defiled. 29And so when you sent for me, I came without any objection. I ask you, then, why did you send for me? 30Cornelius said, It was about this time three days ago that I was praying in my house at three o'clock in the afternoon. Suddenly a man dressed in shining clothes stood in front of me 31and said: Cornelius! God has heard your prayer and has taken notice of your works of charity. 32Send someone to Joppa for a man whose full name is Simon Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner of leather, who lives by the sea. 33And so I sent for you at once, and you have been good enough to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God, waiting to hear anything that the Lord has instructed you to say.

Reflect

What happens in Cornelius' vision? What happens in Peter's vision? What might have been strange or surprising about these visions for these men? What happens when the two meet? What is it like for you to make a connection with someone with a different background and perspective from yours?

Pray

Loving God, open my heart and mind to your Word, that I may open my heart and mind to those with whom you call me into relationship. Create opportunities for conversations of faith that I may learn from others. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Acts 10:34-48: The story of Peter and Cornelius continues. Peter becomes certain that all are equal in God's eyes, Jewish and Gentile followers alike. He retells the story of Jesus, recalling that God called his disciples to share the good news of Christ's salvation. Some Jewish followers are surprised that the Holy Spirit has been given to Gentiles. Peter orders Gentile followers to be baptized.

Today's Scripture: Acts 10:34

Peter began to speak: "I now realize that it is true that God treats everyone on the same basis."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

34Peter began to speak: I now realize that it is true that God treats everyone on the same basis. 35Those who fear him and do what is right are acceptable to him, no matter what race they belong to. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, proclaiming the Good News of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37You know of the great event that took place throughout the land of Israel, beginning in Galilee after John preached his message of baptism. 38You know about Jesus of Nazareth and how God poured out on him the Holy Spirit and power. He went everywhere, doing good and healing all who were under the power of the Devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses of everything that he did in the land of Israel and in Jerusalem. Then they put him to death by nailing him to a cross. 40But God raised him from death three days later and caused him to appear, 41not to everyone, but only to the witnesses that God had already chosen, that is, to us who ate and drank with him after he rose from death. 42And he commanded us to preach the gospel to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God has appointed judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets spoke about him, saying that all who believe in him will have their sins forgiven through the power of his name. 44While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who were listening to his message. 45The Jewish believers who had come from Joppa with Peter were amazed that God had poured out his gift of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles also. 46For they heard them speaking in strange tongues and praising God's greatness. Peter spoke up: 47“These people have received the Holy Spirit, just as we also did. Can anyone, then, stop them from being baptized with water?” 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay with them for a few days.

Reflect

The English word gentile comes from the Latin word for "people." In the Bible, Gentiles are all the peoples who are not Jewish. Jesus reaches out to heal people who are not Jewish (Matthew 8:5-13; Mark 5:1-20; Mark 7:24-37). In today's passage, Peter decides that anyone from any nation who worships God and does right is acceptable to God (10:35). What was important about Peter's vision and his meeting with Cornelius? Are all people treated the same way in your community? In your church? Why or why not?

Pray

God of Grace, too often, people in my community and even my church are shunned because they are different. Forgive me for the times when I fail to reach out to those on the margins. Empower me to embrace them and show them your love. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Acts 11:1-18: Peter reports to the church in Jerusalem. When he arrives, some of the Jewish followers argue with him. They want the Gentile followers to be circumcised, and they criticize Peter for staying and eating with Gentiles. Peter tells them about his vision and explains that God gave the Gentiles the same gift of grace that the Jewish people received.

Today's Scripture: Acts 11:18

When they heard this, they stopped their criticism and praised God, saying, "Then God has given to the Gentiles also the opportunity to repent and live!"

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1The apostles and the other believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2When Peter went to Jerusalem, those who were in favor of circumcising Gentiles criticized him, saying, 3“You were a guest in the home of uncircumcised Gentiles, and you even ate with them!” 4So Peter gave them a complete account of what had happened from the very beginning: 5While I was praying in the city of Joppa, I had a vision. I saw something coming down that looked like a large sheet being lowered by its four corners from heaven, and it stopped next to me. 6I looked closely inside and saw domesticated and wild animals, reptiles, and wild birds. 7Then I heard a voice saying to me, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat!” 8But I said, “Certainly not, Lord! No ritually unclean or defiled food has ever entered my mouth.” 9The voice spoke again from heaven, “Do not consider anything unclean that God has declared clean.” 10This happened three times, and finally the whole thing was drawn back up into heaven. 11At that very moment three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea arrived at the house where I was staying. 12The Spirit told me to go with them without hesitation. These six fellow believers from Joppa accompanied me to Caesarea, and we all went into the house of Cornelius. 13He told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him, Send someone to Joppa for a man whose full name is Simon Peter. 14He will speak words to you by which you and all your family will be saved. 15And when I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came down on them just as on us at the beginning. 16Then I remembered what the Lord had said: “John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 17It is clear that God gave those Gentiles the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ; who was I, then, to try to stop God! 18When they heard this, they stopped their criticism and praised God, saying, “Then God has given to the Gentiles also the opportunity to repent and live!”

Reflect

The Law of Moses said Jewish people were not to spend time with Gentiles or eat food Gentiles had touched. They were shocked that Peter had done this and thought this had made him unclean. Why might it have been difficult for some of the Jewish followers to change their way of thinking about this? Has it ever been difficult for you to change the way you understand God?

Pray

Loving God, it is easy to get stuck in my understanding of your way. I forget that faith is a lifelong journey. Reveal yourself to me anew, that I may have the opportunity to know you more deeply. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Acts 11:19-30: The early followers of Christ face persecution, so they go to other areas, taking the good news about Jesus with them. Saul and Barnabas go to Antioch and receive a prophecy that there will be a famine. The followers of Antioch decide to send support and gifts to the followers in Judea.

Today's Scripture: Acts 11:23

When he arrived and saw how God had blessed the people, he was glad and urged them all to be faithful and true to the Lord with all their hearts.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

19Some of the believers who were scattered by the persecution which took place when Stephen was killed went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, telling the message to Jews only. 20But other believers, who were from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and proclaimed the message to Gentiles also, telling them the Good News about the Lord Jesus. 21The Lord's power was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. 22The news about this reached the church in Jerusalem, so they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23When he arrived and saw how God had blessed the people, he was glad and urged them all to be faithful and true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and many people were brought to the Lord. 25Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul. 26When he found him, he took him to Antioch, and for a whole year the two met with the people of the church and taught a large group. It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians. 27About that time some prophets went from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28One of them, named Agabus, stood up and by the power of the Spirit predicted that a severe famine was about to come over all the earth. (It came when Claudius was emperor.) 29The disciples decided that they each would send as much as they could to help their fellow believers who lived in Judea. 30They did this, then, and sent the money to the church elders by Barnabas and Saul.

Reflect

In today's passage, the followers in Antioch receive word of an impending famine and immediately send help to their fellow believers in Judea. How does your church respond to news of those in need in other places? Why is it important that churches help one another?

Acts 12:1-19(Good News Translation)

Embodying Hope and Celebrating our Unity in Christ Jesus

Introduction

Acts 12:1-19: King Herod is persecuting some members of the church. Peter is arrested and put in jail. An angel appears to him and the chains fall off his hands. Peter leaves with the angel, thinking it is a dream. But when he is able to leave the city and the angel disappears, he realizes that God sent the angel to rescue him. Peter goes to the house where people are praying for him, and everyone is amazed.

Today's Scripture: Acts 12:9

Peter followed him out of the prison, not knowing, however, if what the angel was doing was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1About this time King Herod began to persecute some members of the church. 2He had James, the brother of John, put to death by the sword. 3When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he went ahead and had Peter arrested. (This happened during the time of the Festival of Unleavened Bread.) 4After his arrest Peter was put in jail, where he was handed over to be guarded by four groups of four soldiers each. Herod planned to put him on trial in public after Passover. 5So Peter was kept in jail, but the people of the church were praying earnestly to God for him. 6The night before Herod was going to bring him out to the people, Peter was sleeping between two guards. He was tied with two chains, and there were guards on duty at the prison gate. 7Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood there, and a light shone in the cell. The angel shook Peter by the shoulder, woke him up, and said, “Hurry! Get up!” At once the chains fell off Peter's hands. 8Then the angel said, “Tighten your belt and put on your sandals.” Peter did so, and the angel said, “Put your cloak around you and come with me.” 9Peter followed him out of the prison, not knowing, however, if what the angel was doing was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10They passed by the first guard station and then the second, and came at last to the iron gate that opens into the city. The gate opened for them by itself, and they went out. They walked down a street, and suddenly the angel left Peter. 11Then Peter realized what had happened to him, and said, “Now I know that it is really true! The Lord sent his angel to rescue me from Herod's power and from everything the Jewish people expected to happen.” 12Aware of his situation, he went to the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 13Peter knocked at the outside door, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer it. 14She recognized Peter's voice and was so happy that she ran back in without opening the door, and announced that Peter was standing outside. 15“You are crazy!” they told her. But she insisted that it was true. So they answered, “It is his angel.” 16Meanwhile Peter kept on knocking. At last they opened the door, and when they saw him, they were amazed. 17He motioned with his hand for them to be quiet, and he explained to them how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell this to James and the rest of the believers,” he said; then he left and went somewhere else. 18When morning came, there was a tremendous confusion among the guards—what had happened to Peter? 19Herod gave orders to search for him, but they could not find him. So he had the guards questioned and ordered them put to death. After this, Herod left Judea and spent some time in Caesarea.

Reflect

How does the church respond to what happens to James and Peter? Why did God's message continue to spread even though people tried to stop it? Why does God's message continue to be spread in today's world?

Pray

Lord, the strength of your gospel penetrates the most entrenched systems, the most broken communities and the hardest of hearts. Empower me as your follower to share your good news with those who need to hear it most. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Sharing God's Love

Introduction

Matthew 22:15-46: In today's passage, the Pharisees and Sadducees challenge Jesus. First the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into saying something wrong with a question about taxes. Then the Sadducees ask him about life after death. Then the Pharisees ask which is the most important commandment in the Law. Jesus responds with what is now called The Great Commandment.

Today's Scripture: Matthew 22:36

"Teacher," he asked, "which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

15The Pharisees went off and made a plan to trap Jesus with questions. 16Then they sent to him some of their disciples and some members of Herod's party. “Teacher,” they said, we know that you tell the truth. You teach the truth about God's will for people, without worrying about what others think, because you pay no attention to anyone's status. 17Tell us, then, what do you think? Is it against our Law to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor, or not? 18Jesus, however, was aware of their evil plan, and so he said, You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me? 19Show me the coin for paying the tax! They brought him the coin, 20and he asked them, “Whose face and name are these?” 21“The Emperor's,” they answered. So Jesus said to them, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.” 22When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. 23That same day some Sadducees came to Jesus and claimed that people will not rise from death. 24“Teacher,” they said, Moses said that if a man who has no children dies, his brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children. 25Now, there were seven brothers who used to live here. The oldest got married and died without having children, so he left his widow to his brother. 26The same thing happened to the second brother, to the third, and finally to all seven. 27Last of all, the woman died. 28Now, on the day when the dead rise to life, whose wife will she be? All of them had married her. 29Jesus answered them, How wrong you are! It is because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power. 30For when the dead rise to life, they will be like the angels in heaven and will not marry. 31Now, as for the dead rising to life: haven't you ever read what God has told you? He said, 32“I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” He is the God of the living, not of the dead. 33When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching. 34When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together, 35and one of them, a teacher of the Law, tried to trap him with a question. 36“Teacher,” he asked, “which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37Jesus answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” 38This is the greatest and the most important commandment. 39The second most important commandment is like it: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” 40The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments. 41When some Pharisees gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42“What do you think about the Messiah? Whose descendant is he?” “He is David's descendant,” they answered. 43“Why, then,” Jesus asked, did the Spirit inspire David to call him “Lord”? David said, 44The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right side until I put your enemies under your feet. 45If, then, David called him “Lord,” how can the Messiah be David's descendant? 46No one was able to give Jesus any answer, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Reflect

Jesus and the Pharisees did not see eye to eye. What do you think was the reason for this? Have you ever had to disagree with someone over something you believed in? If so, how did you handle it?

Pray

God of Love, it can be hard to engage in disagreements with others, especially over issues that are important to me. Let all my conflicts be grounded in grace, that in my dealings with others, I may express my love for you. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Sharing God's Love

Introduction

Mark 12:28-44: In today's passage, Jesus again teaches The Great Commandment: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. Then he condemns the teachers of the Law of Moses for their vainglory and swindling.

Today's Scripture: Mark 12:30

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

28A teacher of the Law was there who heard the discussion. He saw that Jesus had given the Sadducees a good answer, so he came to him with a question: “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29Jesus replied, The most important one is this: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31The second most important commandment is this: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” There is no other commandment more important than these two. 32The teacher of the Law said to Jesus, Well done, Teacher! It is true, as you say, that only the Lord is God and that there is no other god but he. 33And you must love God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength; and you must love your neighbor as you love yourself. It is more important to obey these two commandments than to offer on the altar animals and other sacrifices to God. 34Jesus noticed how wise his answer was, and so he told him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” After this nobody dared to ask Jesus any more questions. 35As Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he asked the question, How can the teachers of the Law say that the Messiah will be the descendant of David? 36The Holy Spirit inspired David to say: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right side until I put your enemies under your feet. 37David himself called him “Lord”; so how can the Messiah be David's descendant? A large crowd was listening to Jesus gladly. 38As he taught them, he said, Watch out for the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplace, 39who choose the reserved seats in the synagogues and the best places at feasts. 40They take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers. Their punishment will be all the worse! 41As Jesus sat near the Temple treasury, he watched the people as they dropped in their money. Many rich men dropped in a lot of money; 42then a poor widow came along and dropped in two little copper coins, worth about a penny. 43He called his disciples together and said to them, I tell you that this poor widow put more in the offering box than all the others. 44For the others put in what they had to spare of their riches; but she, poor as she is, put in all she had—she gave all she had to live on.

Reflect

What does it mean to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength? Think of an example of how each of these types of love can be expressed. Are you able to love God in these ways? Why or why not?

Pray

Lord, teach me to love you with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. Reveal your loving spirit in my life that I may know your love and share it with all people. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Sharing God's Love

Introduction

Luke 10:25-42: In today's passage, Jesus tells a story to explain what it means to love your neighbors as yourself. The story of The Good Samaritan helps the teacher of the law understand who his neighbor is. Then Jesus visits Mary and Martha and teaches about priorities.

Today's Scripture: Luke 10:27b

"Love your neighbor as you love yourself."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

25A teacher of the Law came up and tried to trap Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to receive eternal life?” 26Jesus answered him, “What do the Scriptures say? How do you interpret them?” 27The man answered, “ “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind”; and “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” ” 28“You are right,” Jesus replied; “do this and you will live.” 29But the teacher of the Law wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus answered, There was once a man who was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when robbers attacked him, stripped him, and beat him up, leaving him half dead. 31It so happened that a priest was going down that road; but when he saw the man, he walked on by on the other side. 32In the same way a Levite also came there, went over and looked at the man, and then walked on by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan who was traveling that way came upon the man, and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity. 34He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them; then he put the man on his own animal and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. “Take care of him,” he told the innkeeper, “and when I come back this way, I will pay you whatever else you spend on him.” 36And Jesus concluded, “In your opinion, which one of these three acted like a neighbor toward the man attacked by the robbers?” 37The teacher of the Law answered, “The one who was kind to him.” Jesus replied, “You go, then, and do the same.” 38As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him in her home. 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat down at the feet of the Lord and listened to his teaching. 40Martha was upset over all the work she had to do, so she came and said, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself Tell her to come and help me!” 41The Lord answered her, Martha, Martha! You are worried and troubled over so many things, 42but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her.

Reflect

In the story about Mary and Martha, Martha was concerned with practical matters like preparing food and offering hospitality. Mary was more interested in listening to Jesus teach. Why did Jesus praise Mary? What did he want Martha to know? What does this passage mean to you?

Pray

Lord of Life, it is easy for me to get caught up in my busy-ness, trying to accomplish so many things that I fail to focus on those things that are most important. Bring my priorities into focus, that my life may reflect your way. Amen.

Embodying Hope and Sharing God's Love

Introduction

Leviticus 19:1-18: God gives Moses guidelines for how the people of Israel are to live together as God's holy people. They must put God first, work for justice, treat others with honesty and respect, and work for harmony in their interpersonal relationships.

Today's Scripture: Leviticus 19:1,2

The LORD told Moses to say to the community of Israel, "Be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy."

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1The LORD told Moses 2to say to the community of Israel, Be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy. 3Each of you must respect your mother and your father, and must keep the Sabbath, as I have commanded. I am the LORD your God. 4Do not abandon me and worship idols; do not make gods of metal and worship them. I am the LORD your God. 5When you kill an animal for a fellowship offering, keep the regulations that I have given you, and I will accept the offering. 6The meat must be eaten on the day the animal is killed or on the next day. Any meat left on the third day must be burned, 7because it is ritually unclean, and if anyone eats it, I will not accept the offering. 8Any who eat it will be guilty of treating as ordinary what is dedicated to me, and they will no longer be considered my people. 9When you harvest your fields, do not cut the grain at the edges of the fields, and do not go back to cut the heads of grain that were left. 10Do not go back through your vineyard to gather the grapes that were missed or to pick up the grapes that have fallen; leave them for poor people and foreigners. I am the LORD your God. 11Do not steal or cheat or lie. 12Do not make a promise in my name if you do not intend to keep it; that brings disgrace on my name. I am the LORD your God. 13Do not rob or take advantage of anyone. Do not hold back the wages of someone you have hired, not even for one night. 14Do not curse the deaf or put something in front of the blind so as to make them stumble over it. Obey me; I am the LORD your God. 15Be honest and just when you make decisions in legal cases; do not show favoritism to the poor or fear the rich. 16Do not spread lies about anyone, and when someone is on trial for his life, speak out if your testimony can help him. I am the LORD. 17Do not bear a grudge against others, but settle your differences with them, so that you will not commit a sin because of them. 18Do not take revenge on others or continue to hate them, but love your neighbors as you love yourself. I am the LORD.

Reflect

Being a holy people did not simply mean that the Israelites should avoid doing things that would make them unclean. It also meant that they should look out for the needs of others, especially the poor. Are these commandments relevant for us today? How can you apply them in your life?

Pray

God of Grace, teach me to be one of your holy people. Make me an instrument of your peace and love that I may live and serve with justice, faith and hope. Amen.

Deuteronomy 6:1-9(Good News Translation)

Embodying Hope and Sharing God's Love

Introduction

Deuteronomy 6:1-9: Deuteronomy contains two sets of rules. Those appearing in chapters 5-11 are more general and provide the basic laws that will be made more specific in the second set of rules found in 12-26. In today's passage, Moses tells the people that the LORD wants them to obey the rules in the Promised Land. He urges them to listen and obey, that they may become a strong nation. Then he shares the commandment later underscored by Jesus: to love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul and strength.

Today's Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:7

Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1These are all the laws that the LORD your God commanded me to teach you. Obey them in the land that you are about to enter and occupy. 2As long as you live, you and your descendants are to honor the LORD your God and obey all his laws that I am giving you, so that you may live in that land a long time. 3Listen to them, people of Israel, and obey them! Then all will go well with you, and you will become a mighty nation and live in that rich and fertile land, just as the LORD, the God of our ancestors, has promised. 4Israel, remember this! The LORD —and the LORD alone—is our God. 5Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6Never forget these commands that I am giving you today. 7Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working. 8Tie them on your arms and wear them on your foreheads as a reminder. 9Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.

Reflect

What does Moses tell the people to do? Why are they told to write and discuss the laws over and over again? How might this kind of discipline impact their understanding and practice of the law? How might this direction be helpful for your Christian practice?

Pray

Lord, the more I talk about you, the more deeply I can know you. Help me keep your word at the front of my mind that I may deepen my faith and share it with others. Amen.

Galatians 1:1-24(Good News Translation)

Embodying Hope and Sharing God's Love

Introduction

Galatians 1:1-24: Today we begin reading the book of Galatians. Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians because he wanted them to know that he was an apostle of Jesus Christ, and that the message he had given them about Jesus was the only true one. In this letter, he expresses his anger because he has learned that some people were telling the churches in Galatia that they must obey the Law of Moses in order to be God's children. Paul says that both Jews and Gentiles can be God's children.

Today's Scripture: Galatians 1:4

In order to set us free from this present evil age, Christ gave himself for our sins, in obedience to the will of our God and Father.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1From Paul, whose call to be an apostle did not come from human beings or by human means, but from Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from death. 2All the believers who are here join me in sending greetings to the churches of Galatia: 3May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. 4In order to set us free from this present evil age, Christ gave himself for our sins, in obedience to the will of our God and Father. 5To God be the glory forever and ever! Amen. 6I am surprised at you! In no time at all you are deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ, and are accepting another gospel. 7Actually, there is no “other gospel,” but I say this because there are some people who are upsetting you and trying to change the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel that is different from the one we preached to you, may he be condemned to hell! 9We have said it before, and now I say it again: if anyone preaches to you a gospel that is different from the one you accepted, may he be condemned to hell! 10Does this sound as if I am trying to win human approval? No indeed! What I want is God's approval! Am I trying to be popular with people? If I were still trying to do so, I would not be a servant of Christ. 11Let me tell you, my friends, that the gospel I preach is not of human origin. 12I did not receive it from any human being, nor did anyone teach it to me. It was Jesus Christ himself who revealed it to me. 13You have been told how I used to live when I was devoted to the Jewish religion, how I persecuted without mercy the church of God and did my best to destroy it. 14I was ahead of most other Jews of my age in my practice of the Jewish religion, and was much more devoted to the traditions of our ancestors. 15But God in his grace chose me even before I was born, and called me to serve him. And when he decided 16to reveal his Son to me, so that I might preach the Good News about him to the Gentiles, I did not go to anyone for advice, 17nor did I go to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before me. Instead, I went at once to Arabia, and then I returned to Damascus. 18It was three years later that I went to Jerusalem to obtain information from Peter, and I stayed with him for two weeks. 19I did not see any other apostle except James, the Lord's brother. 20What I write is true. God knows that I am not lying! 21Afterward I went to places in Syria and Cilicia. 22At that time the members of the churches in Judea did not know me personally. 23They knew only what others were saying: “The man who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith that he once tried to destroy!” 24And so they praised God because of me.

Reflect

Some in the churches in Galatia were denying that God had chosen Paul to be a messenger of the good news about Jesus Christ. Have you ever encountered someone you believed to be a messenger from God? How could you tell?

Pray

Loving God, you speak to us in so many ways. Help me recognize your servants, that I may listen to them and hear your word. Amen.

Galatians 2:1-21(Good News Translation)

Embodying Hope and Sharing God's Love

Introduction

Galatians 2:1-21: Paul describes his visit to Jerusalem. During the visit, he shared his story and met with leaders to convince them of his understanding of God's grace. James, Peter and John welcomed him, indicating that they affirmed his ministry. Their affirmation was put to the test when Paul confronted Peter about refusing to eat with Gentiles.

Today's Scripture: Galatians 2:20

...so that it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. This life that I live now, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me.

How is this Scripture passage speaking to me today?

Today's Reading

1Fourteen years later I went back to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. 2I went because God revealed to me that I should go. In a private meeting with the leaders I explained the gospel message that I preach to the Gentiles. I did not want my work in the past or in the present to be a failure. 3My companion Titus, even though he is Greek, was not forced to be circumcised, 4although some wanted it done. Pretending to be believers, these men slipped into our group as spies, in order to find out about the freedom we have through our union with Christ Jesus. They wanted to make slaves of us, 5but in order to keep the truth of the gospel safe for you, we did not give in to them for a minute. 6But those who seemed to be the leaders—I say this because it makes no difference to me what they were; God does not judge by outward appearances—those leaders, I say, made no new suggestions to me. 7On the contrary, they saw that God had given me the task of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as he had given Peter the task of preaching the gospel to the Jews. 8For by God's power I was made an apostle to the Gentiles, just as Peter was made an apostle to the Jews. 9James, Peter, and John, who seemed to be the leaders, recognized that God had given me this special task; so they shook hands with Barnabas and me, as a sign that we were all partners. We agreed that Barnabas and I would work among the Gentiles and they among the Jews. 10All they asked was that we should remember the needy in their group, which is the very thing I have been eager to do. 11But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him in public, because he was clearly wrong. 12Before some men who had been sent by James arrived there, Peter had been eating with the Gentile believers. But after these men arrived, he drew back and would not eat with the Gentiles, because he was afraid of those who were in favor of circumcising them. 13The other Jewish believers also started acting like cowards along with Peter; and even Barnabas was swept along by their cowardly action. 14When I saw that they were not walking a straight path in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you have been living like a Gentile, not like a Jew. How, then, can you try to force Gentiles to live like Jews?” 15Indeed, we are Jews by birth and not “Gentile sinners,” as they are called. 16Yet we know that a person is put right with God only through faith in Jesus Christ, never by doing what the Law requires. We, too, have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be put right with God through our faith in Christ, and not by doing what the Law requires. For no one is put right with God by doing what the Law requires. 17If, then, as we try to be put right with God by our union with Christ, we are found to be sinners, as much as the Gentiles are—does this mean that Christ is serving the cause of sin? By no means! 18If I start to rebuild the system of Law that I tore down, then I show myself to be someone who breaks the Law. 19So far as the Law is concerned, however, I am dead—killed by the Law itself—in order that I might live for God. I have been put to death with Christ on his cross, 20so that it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. This life that I live now, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me. 21I refuse to reject the grace of God. But if a person is put right with God through the Law, it means that Christ died for nothing!

Reflect

The Law of Moses said it was wrong to eat certain foods and to share meals with Gentiles or with Jews who did not keep the purity laws. Peter had earlier agreed that these rules were not required of Gentile followers of Jesus (Acts 11:1-18), but appeared to have changed positions here. Why might he have changed positions?

Pray

Gracious God, our love and hospitality are tested when we are in relationship with those who are different from us. Open my heart and mind to those with whom I struggle most. Amen.
