Members phkrause Posted December 5, 2010 Author Members Posted December 5, 2010 December 5, 2010 Matthew 3:1-12 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Giving Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Matthew 3:1-12: Today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel continues the theme of preparing for the advent of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist tells people to turn back to God and get ready for the one God will send (Jesus). Then he will baptize people who repent from their sins. Today’s Scripture: Matthew 3:11 I baptize you with water to show that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. He is much greater than I am; and I am not good enough even to carry his sandals. Today’s Reading 1At that time John the Baptist came to the desert of Judea and started preaching. 2“Turn away from your sins,” he said, “because the Kingdom of heaven is near!” 3John was the man the prophet Isaiah was talking about when he said, “Someone is shouting in the desert, ‘Prepare a road for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!’” 4John's clothes were made of camel's hair; he wore a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5People came to him from Jerusalem, from the whole province of Judea, and from all over the country near the Jordan River. 6They confessed their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan. 7When John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him to be baptized, he said to them, “You snakes—who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send? 8Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins. 9And don't think you can escape punishment by saying that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these rocks and make descendants for Abraham! 10The ax is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire. 11I baptize you with water to show that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. He is much greater than I am; and I am not good enough even to carry his sandals. 12He has his winnowing shovel with him to thresh out all the grain. He will gather his wheat into his barn, but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out. ” Reflect Reread v. 2. The “Kingdom of heaven” refers to the eternal rule of God, who lives in heaven, but whose Kingdom will include everything that happens on earth. What comes to mind when you think of the Kingdom of heaven? Pray Lord Jesus, I am sorry for the ways in which I have failed to live by your Word. Forgive me and make me worthy to serve you. Fill me with your Spirit, that I may share your grace with others. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 8, 2010 Author Members Posted December 8, 2010 December 6, 2010 Malachi 3:1-4 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Giving Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Malachi 3:1-4: Today we begin reading from the book of Malachi. The call of this passage was to tell the Israelites to return to faith, to return to trusting in God, to return to dealing justly and honestly and to return to giving God what was due to him. Malachi says that God will send a special messenger to destroy evil and to make sure that the people bring proper gifts and sacrifices to the temple. Today’s Scripture: Malachi 3:3 He will come to judge like one who refines and purifies silver. As a metalworker refines silver and gold, so the LORD’s messenger will purify the priests, so that they will bring to the LORD the right kind of offerings. Today’s Reading 1The LORD Almighty answers, “I will send my messenger to prepare the way for me. Then the Lord you are looking for will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger you long to see will come and proclaim my covenant.” 2But who will be able to endure the day when he comes? Who will be able to survive when he appears? He will be like strong soap, like a fire that refines metal. 3He will come to judge like one who refines and purifies silver. As a metalworker refines silver and gold, so the LORD's messenger will purify the priests, so that they will bring to the LORD the right kind of offerings. 4Then the offerings which the people of Judah and Jerusalem bring to the LORD will be pleasing to him, as they used to be in the past. Reflect When the Israelites would return and be faithful to God, the blessings of the Lord would be poured out, the blessing of the Lord would be given so that once again people would be able to see by their well being that they belonged to God. Do you bring to God your best offering? Do you deal justly and honestly in everything you do? Pray Generous God, you have filled my life with everything I need. Give me a generous heart that I may offer my gifts to your church, and help those who further your work in the world. Amen. But those who honor the name of God will experience great victory and freedom. God will empower those who are faithful to bring justice to the land. Today’s Scripture: Malachi 4:2 But for you who obey me, my saving power will rise on you like the sun and bring healing like the sun’s rays. You will be as free and happy as calves let out of a stall. Today’s Reading 1The LORD Almighty says, “The day is coming when all proud and evil people will burn like straw. On that day they will burn up, and there will be nothing left of them. 2But for you who obey me, my saving power will rise on you like the sun and bring healing like the sun's rays. You will be as free and happy as calves let out of a stall. 3On the day when I act, you will overcome the wicked, and they will be like dust under your feet. 4Remember the teachings of my servant Moses, the laws and commands which I gave him at Mount Sinai for all the people of Israel to obey. 5But before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes, I will send you the prophet Elijah. 6He will bring fathers and children together again; otherwise I would have to come and destroy your country. ” Reflect The Lord’s coming has two sides in this prophecy: punishment and deliverance. How do you feel about the punishment described in this text? How do you respond to the promises of God’s saving power? Why must fathers and children be reconciled before God can come in power (v. 6)? Pray Loving God, let me be an agent of peace today, a person who works for unity where there is disunity. Remind me that the flame of your love burns continuously, and let me share that spark with all who are in conflict. Amen. He says that God will bring the exiled people home and appoint an honest king to bring justice and greatness to Israel. Today’s Scripture: Jeremiah 23:5 The LORD says, “The time is coming when I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. That king will rule wisely and do what is right and just throughout the land.” Today’s Reading 1How terrible will be the LORD's judgment on those rulers who destroy and scatter his people! 2This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the rulers who were supposed to take care of his people: “You have not taken care of my people; you have scattered them and driven them away. Now I am going to punish you for the evil you have done. 3I will gather the rest of my people from the countries where I have scattered them, and I will bring them back to their homeland. They will have many children and increase in number. 4I will appoint rulers to take care of them. My people will no longer be afraid or terrified, and I will not punish them again. I, the LORD, have spoken. ” 5The LORD says, “The time is coming when I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. That king will rule wisely and do what is right and just throughout the land. 6When he is king, the people of Judah will be safe, and the people of Israel will live in peace. He will be called ‘The LORD Our Salvation. ’ 7“The time is coming,” says the LORD, when people will no longer swear by me as the living God who brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt. 8Instead, they will swear by me as the living God who brought the people of Israel out of a northern land and out of all the other countries where I had scattered them. Then they will live in their own land. ” Reflect Reread v. 5-6. These verses tell of the coming of an ideal king from the line of David who will rule with justice. What virtues do you seek in political leaders today? Can you think of any leaders who uphold these virtues? Pray God of justice, as new leaders prepare to enter the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, empower them to work together for justice and peace. After King Solomon died, the ten northern tribes formed their own kingdom (Israel), while the two southernmost tribes formed the kingdom of Judah. Jeremiah envisions a time when Israel will return to its own land and the tribes will be restored as one nation. Today’s Scripture: Jeremiah 31:3, 4 People of Israel, I have always loved you, so I continue to show you my constant love. Once again I will rebuild you. Once again you will take up your tambourines and dance joyfully. Today’s Reading 1The LORD says, “The time is coming when I will be the God of all the tribes of Israel, and they will be my people. 2In the desert I showed mercy to those people who had escaped death. When the people of Israel longed for rest, 3I appeared to them from far away. People of Israel, I have always loved you, so I continue to show you my constant love. 4Once again I will rebuild you. Once again you will take up your tambourines and dance joyfully. 5Once again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria, and those who plant them will eat what the vineyards produce. 6Yes, the time is coming when sentries will call out on the hills of Ephraim, ‘Let's go up to Zion, to the LORD our God. ’ ” 7The LORD says, “Sing with joy for Israel, the greatest of the nations. Sing your song of praise, ‘The LORD has saved his people; he has rescued all who are left.’ 8I will bring them from the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. The blind and the lame will come with them, pregnant women and those about to give birth. They will come back a great nation. 9My people will return weeping, praying as I lead them back. I will guide them to streams of water, on a smooth road where they will not stumble. I am like a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my oldest son.” 10The LORD says, “Nations, listen to me and proclaim my words on the far-off shores. I scattered my people, but I will gather them and guard them as a shepherd guards his flock. 11I have set Israel's people free and have saved them from a mighty nation. 12They will come and sing for joy on Mount Zion and be delighted with my gifts— gifts of grain and wine and olive oil, gifts of sheep and cattle. They will be like a well-watered garden; they will have everything they need. 13Then the young women will dance and be happy, and men, young and old, will rejoice. I will comfort them and turn their mourning into joy, their sorrow into gladness. 14I will fill the priests with the richest food and satisfy all the needs of my people. I, the LORD, have spoken.” Reflect Jeremiah envisions a time when all the tribes will be restored as one nation of God’s people, and the kingdom of Israel will be rebuilt. What brokenness do you see in our world today? How can healing among nations begin? What can the church do to help? Pray God of unity, your world suffers from brokenness, war and conflict. Jeremiah prophesies that God will appoint a king from the family of David, and that a descendant of David will always rule over Israel. God also promises that David and the priests from the Levi tribe will have many descendants. Today’s Scripture: Jeremiah 33:17, 18 I, the LORD, promise that there will always be a descendant of David to be king of Israel and that there will always be priests from the tribe of Levi to serve me and to offer burnt offerings, grain offerings, and sacrifices. Today’s Reading 14The LORD said, “The time is coming when I will fulfill the promise that I made to the people of Israel and Judah. 15At that time I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. That king will do what is right and just throughout the land. 16The people of Judah and of Jerusalem will be rescued and will live in safety. The city will be called ‘The LORD Our Salvation. ’ 17I, the LORD, promise that there will always be a descendant of David to be king of Israel 18and that there will always be priests from the tribe of Levi to serve me and to offer burnt offerings, grain offerings, and sacrifices. ” 19The LORD said to me, 20“I have made a covenant with the day and with the night, so that they always come at their proper times; and that covenant can never be broken. 21In the same way I have made a covenant with my servant David that he would always have a descendant to be king, and I have made a covenant with the priests from the tribe of Levi that they would always serve me; and those covenants can never be broken. 22I will increase the number of descendants of my servant David and the number of priests from the tribe of Levi, so that it will be as impossible to count them as it is to count the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the seashore. ” 23The LORD said to me, 24“Have you noticed how people are saying that I have rejected Israel and Judah, the two families that I chose? And so they look with contempt on my people and no longer consider them a nation. 25But I, the LORD, have a covenant with day and night, and I have made the laws that control earth and sky. 26And just as surely as I have done this, so I will maintain my covenant with Jacob's descendants and with my servant David. I will choose one of David's descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will be merciful to my people and make them prosperous again. ” Reflect What does God promise to the people in today’s passage? What words might have been most comforting to the exiled people? What words of hope do you need during this Advent season? Pray Lord God, as I wait and meditate on the good news of the birth of your Son, Jesus Christ, remind me of the many promises you have fulfilled for your people. Help me to share the news of your love and faithfulness with those around me, that through you, I may shine a light of hope in darkness. Amen. The desert will bloom and become fertile, the weak will become strong, the impaired will receive new gifts, and water will quench dry lands. Those seeking God will find him and rejoice. Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 35:3, 4 Give strength to hands that are tired and to knees that tremble with weakness. Tell everyone who is discouraged, “Be strong and don’t be afraid! God is coming to your rescue, coming to punish your enemies.” Today’s Reading 1The desert will rejoice, and flowers will bloom in the wastelands. 2The desert will sing and shout for joy; it will be as beautiful as the Lebanon Mountains and as fertile as the fields of Carmel and Sharon. Everyone will see the LORD's splendor, see his greatness and power. 3Give strength to hands that are tired and to knees that tremble with weakness. 4Tell everyone who is discouraged, “Be strong and don't be afraid! God is coming to your rescue, coming to punish your enemies. ” 5The blind will be able to see, and the deaf will hear. 6The lame will leap and dance, and those who cannot speak will shout for joy. Streams of water will flow through the desert; 7the burning sand will become a lake, and dry land will be filled with springs. Where jackals used to live, marsh grass and reeds will grow. 8There will be a highway there, called “The Road of Holiness.” No sinner will ever travel that road; no fools will mislead those who follow it. 9No lions will be there; no fierce animals will pass that way. Those whom the LORD has rescued will travel home by that road. 10They will reach Jerusalem with gladness, singing and shouting for joy. They will be happy forever, forever free from sorrow and grief. Reflect In this passage, the land of God’s people is pictured as blooming and rejoicing because the Lord will bring his people back from exile to live in Zion. The imagery of a blooming desert is also found in Isaiah chapters 40-55. What comes to mind for you when you read this passage? What parts of the earth need renewing today? God’s lasting covenant is compared to a magnificent banquet. Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 55:3 Listen now, my people, and come to me; come to me, and you will have life! I will make a lasting covenant with you and give you the blessings I promised to David. Today’s Reading 1The LORD says, “Come, everyone who is thirsty— here is water! Come, you that have no money— buy grain and eat! Come! Buy wine and milk— it will cost you nothing! 2Why spend money on what does not satisfy? Why spend your wages and still be hungry? Listen to me and do what I say, and you will enjoy the best food of all. 3Listen now, my people, and come to me; come to me, and you will have life! I will make a lasting covenant with you and give you the blessings I promised to David. 4I made him a leader and commander of nations, and through him I showed them my power. 5Now you will summon foreign nations; at one time they did not know you, but now they will come running to join you! I, the LORD your God, the holy God of Israel, will make all this happen; I will give you honor and glory.” 6Turn to the LORD and pray to him, now that he is near. 7Let the wicked leave their way of life and change their way of thinking. Let them turn to the LORD, our God; he is merciful and quick to forgive. 8“My thoughts,” says the LORD, “are not like yours, and my ways are different from yours. 9As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways and thoughts above yours. 10My word is like the snow and the rain that come down from the sky to water the earth. They make the crops grow and provide seed for planting and food to eat. 11So also will be the word that I speak— it will not fail to do what I plan for it; it will do everything I send it to do. 12You will leave Babylon with joy; you will be led out of the city in peace. The mountains and hills will burst into singing, and the trees will shout for joy. 13Cypress trees will grow where now there are briers; myrtle trees will come up in place of thorns. This will be a sign that will last forever, a reminder of what I, the LORD, have done.” Reflect What is promised to those who are thirsty, hungry, or in need? What is the key to partaking in God’s abundant life? What is “the best food of all” (v. 2)? In what ways does God’s Word nurture you each day? Pray Life giving God, you sustain me with your Word, which never fails. Your ways are better than my ways. Forgive me when I seek to rely on my own strength and turn away from you. This section focuses on the people of God living in the city of Jerusalem. The people are challenged to turn away from idols and obey God’s commands. In this passage, Isaiah explains that other nations will become a part of God’s people. Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 56:7 “I will bring you to Zion, my sacred hill, give you joy in my house of prayer, and accept the sacrifices you offer on my altar. My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations.” Today’s Reading 1The LORD says to his people, “Do what is just and right, for soon I will save you. 2I will bless those who always observe the Sabbath and do not misuse it. I will bless those who do nothing evil. ” 3A foreigner who has joined the LORD's people should not say, “The LORD will not let me worship with his people. ” A man who has been castrated should never think that because he cannot have children, he can never be part of God's people. 4The LORD says to such a man, “If you honor me by observing the Sabbath and if you do what pleases me and faithfully keep my covenant, 5then your name will be remembered in my Temple and among my people longer than if you had sons and daughters. You will never be forgotten. ” 6And the LORD says to those foreigners who become part of his people, who love him and serve him, who observe the Sabbath and faithfully keep his covenant: 7“I will bring you to Zion, my sacred hill, give you joy in my house of prayer, and accept the sacrifices you offer on my altar. My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations. ” 8The Sovereign LORD, who has brought his people Israel home from exile, has promised that he will bring still other people to join them. Reflect In this passage, Isaiah says that “foreigners” (non-Israelites) are welcome in New Jerusalem. However, they must follow the same rules as the Israelites, which means following the Sabbath, not worshipping idols, and obeying the Law of Moses. What are the implications of welcoming outsiders into a community? What are the risks? Why do you think God did this? Pray O God, who welcomes all people through Jesus Christ, enable us to be more open and accepting of others who are not of our community. Empower us to be ambassadors for your kingdom by welcoming people into your presence. In your name we pray. Amen. The exiles will be brought back and the people will live in justice and peace. Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 60:19 No longer will the sun be your light by day or the moon be your light by night; I, the LORD, will be your eternal light; the light of my glory will shine on you. Today’s Reading 1Arise, Jerusalem, and shine like the sun; The glory of the LORD is shining on you! 2Other nations will be covered by darkness, But on you the light of the LORD will shine; The brightness of his presence will be with you. 3Nations will be drawn to your light, And kings to the dawning of your new day. 4Look around you and see what is happening: Your people are gathering to come home! Your sons will come from far away; Your daughters will be carried like children. 5You will see this and be filled with joy; You will tremble with excitement. The wealth of the nations will be brought to you; From across the sea their riches will come. 6Great caravans of camels will come, from Midian and Ephah. They will come from Sheba, bringing gold and incense. People will tell the good news of what the LORD has done! 7All the sheep of Kedar and Nebaioth Will be brought to you as sacrifices And offered on the altar to please the LORD. The LORD will make his Temple more glorious than ever. 8What are these ships that skim along like clouds, Like doves returning home? 9They are ships coming from distant lands, Bringing God's people home. They bring with them silver and gold To honor the name of the LORD, The holy God of Israel, Who has made all nations honor his people. 10The LORD says to Jerusalem, “Foreigners will rebuild your walls, And their kings will serve you. In my anger I punished you, But now I will show you my favor and mercy. 11Day and night your gates will be open, So that the kings of the nations May bring you their wealth. 12But nations that do not serve you Will be completely destroyed. 13The wood of the pine, the juniper, and the cypress, The finest wood from the forests of Lebanon, Will be brought to rebuild you, Jerusalem, To make my Temple beautiful, To make my city glorious. 14The descendants of those who oppressed you will come And bow low to show their respect. All who once despised you will worship at your feet. They will call you ‘The City of the LORD,’ “Zion, the City of Israel's Holy God.” 15You will no longer be forsaken and hated, A city deserted and desolate. I will make you great and beautiful, A place of joy forever and ever. 16Nations and kings will care for you As a mother nurses her child. You will know that I, the LORD, have saved you, That the mighty God of Israel sets you free. 17I will bring you gold instead of bronze, Silver and bronze instead of iron and wood, And iron instead of stone. Your rulers will no longer oppress you; I will make them rule with justice and peace. 18The sounds of violence will be heard no more; Destruction will not shatter your country again. I will protect and defend you like a wall; You will praise me because I have saved you. 19No longer will the sun be your light by day Or the moon be your light by night; I, the LORD, will be your eternal light; The light of my glory will shine on you. 20Your days of grief will come to an end. I, the LORD, will be your eternal light, More lasting than the sun and moon. 21Your people will all do what is right, And will possess the land forever. I planted them, I made them, To reveal my greatness to all. 22Even your smallest and humblest family Will become as great as a powerful nation. When the right time comes, I will make this happen quickly. I am the LORD!” Reflect This prophecy appeals to the deepest longings of ancient Israel: when the land was lost and the people of Israel were scattered far and wide, God promised to restore them and bring them home. Have you ever felt lost, scattered, or adrift? Are you separated from the people you love most, or from the places where you feel most secure? What does it mean to you to say that the Lord will be your eternal light (v. 20)? Pray God, thank you for your never-ending love. Your power and your desire to bring us home to you are our constant hope. Turn my thoughts today toward the home you have prepared, and may it offer hope to all who are scattered and lost. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 16, 2010 Author Members Posted December 16, 2010 December 16, 2010 2 Peter 1:1-21 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction 2 Peter 1:1-21: This letter is a defense of the teachings of the early apostles. The letter begins with a greeting to an unknown group of Christians. The writer tells them to live a life pleasing to God, to grow in their faith by cultivating goodness, understanding, self-control and patience. Today’s Scripture: 2 Peter 1:3 God’s divine power has given us everything we need to live a truly religious life through our knowledge of the one who called us to share in his own glory and goodness. Today’s Reading 1 From Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ— To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have been given a faith as precious as ours: 2 May grace and peace be yours in full measure through your knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 God's divine power has given us everything we need to live a truly religious life through our knowledge of the one who called us to share in his own glory and goodness. 4 In this way he has given us the very great and precious gifts he promised, so that by means of these gifts you may escape from the destructive lust that is in the world, and may come to share the divine nature. 5 For this very reason do your best to add goodness to your faith; to your goodness add knowledge; 6 to your knowledge add self-control; to your self-control add endurance; to your endurance add godliness; 7 to your godliness add Christian affection; and to your Christian affection add love. 8 These are the qualities you need, and if you have them in abundance, they will make you active and effective in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But if you do not have them, you are so shortsighted that you cannot see and have forgotten that you have been purified from your past sins. 10 So then, my friends, try even harder to make God's call and his choice of you a permanent experience; if you do so, you will never abandon your faith. 11 In this way you will be given the full right to enter the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 12 And so I will always remind you of these matters, even though you already know them and are firmly grounded in the truth you have received. 13 I think it only right for me to stir up your memory of these matters as long as I am still alive. 14 I know that I shall soon put off this mortal body, as our Lord Jesus Christ plainly told me. 15 I will do my best, then, to provide a way for you to remember these matters at all times after my death. 16 We have not depended on made-up stories in making known to you the mighty coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. With our own eyes we saw his greatness. 17 We were there when he was given honor and glory by God the Father, when the voice came to him from the Supreme Glory, saying, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased!” 18 We ourselves heard this voice coming from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 So we are even more confident of the message proclaimed by the prophets. You will do well to pay attention to it, because it is like a lamp shining in a dark place until the Day dawns and the light of the morning star shines in your hearts. 20 Above all else, however, remember that none of us can explain by ourselves a prophecy in the Scriptures. 21 For no prophetic message ever came just from the human will, but people were under the control of the Holy Spirit as they spoke the message that came from God. Reflect According to the author, becoming more Christ-like is the only way to escape the evil desires and the corrupt influences of the world. Here, acting in faith means doing things that show oneness with God. How can changing your behavior actually change the things you want? What spiritual disciplines might help you in experiencing oneness with God? Pray Lord God, help me to stand firm in the truth you have shared with me – the glory and hope of Jesus Christ. Make me one with you in all I do. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 17, 2010 Author Members Posted December 17, 2010 December 17, 2010 2 Peter 2:1-22 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction 2 Peter 2:1-22: This passage warns Christians to be on guard against false prophets and false teachers who “deny the Master” (2:1). The Lord will be hard on these people, and no good will come of their misdeeds. Today’s Scripture: 2 Peter 2:9 And so the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials and how to keep the wicked under punishment for the Day of Judgment. Today’s Reading 1 False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction. 2 Even so, many will follow their immoral ways; and because of what they do, others will speak evil of the Way of truth. 3 In their greed these false teachers will make a profit out of telling you made-up stories. For a long time now their Judge has been ready, and their Destroyer has been wide awake! 4 God did not spare the angels who sinned, but threw them into hell, where they are kept chained in darkness, waiting for the Day of Judgment. 5 God did not spare the ancient world, but brought the flood on the world of godless people; the only ones he saved were Noah, who preached righteousness, and seven other people. 6 God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, destroying them with fire, and made them an example of what will happen to the godless. 7 He rescued Lot, a good man, who was distressed by the immoral conduct of lawless people. 8 That good man lived among them, and day after day he suffered agony as he saw and heard their evil actions. 9 And so the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials and how to keep the wicked under punishment for the Day of Judgment, 10 especially those who follow their filthy bodily lusts and despise God's authority. These false teachers are bold and arrogant, and show no respect for the glorious beings above; instead, they insult them. 11 Even the angels, who are so much stronger and mightier than these false teachers, do not accuse them with insults in the presence of the Lord. 12 But these people act by instinct, like wild animals born to be captured and killed; they attack with insults anything they do not understand. They will be destroyed like wild animals, 13 and they will be paid with suffering for the suffering they have caused. Pleasure for them is to do anything in broad daylight that will satisfy their bodily appetites; they are a shame and a disgrace as they join you in your meals, all the while enjoying their deceitful ways! 14 They want to look for nothing but the chance to commit adultery; their appetite for sin is never satisfied. They lead weak people into a trap. Their hearts are trained to be greedy. They are under God's curse! 15 They have left the straight path and have lost their way; they have followed the path taken by Balaam son of Beor, who loved the money he would get for doing wrong 16 and was rebuked for his sin. His donkey spoke with a human voice and stopped the prophet's insane action. 17 These people are like dried-up springs, like clouds blown along by a storm; God has reserved a place for them in the deepest darkness. 18 They make proud and stupid statements, and use immoral bodily lusts to trap those who are just beginning to escape from among people who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom while they themselves are slaves of destructive habits—for we are slaves of anything that has conquered us. 20 If people have escaped from the corrupting forces of the world through their knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and then are again caught and conquered by them, such people are in worse condition at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been much better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than to know it and then turn away from the sacred command that was given them. 22 What happened to them shows that the proverbs are true: “A dog goes back to what it has vomited” and “A pig that has been washed goes back to roll in the mud.” Reflect The author writes at length about the corruption of his day. What false teachings and immoralities did the followers of Christ have to deal with? How do you know when something is false or immoral? What false teachings and immoralities prevail in today’s society? Do you encounter these things in your community? If so, how do you and your church deal with them? How do you talk about them with your family and friends? Pray Great teacher, grant me the wisdom to recognize those things that reflect your love, grace, peace and justice in this world. Strengthen me to turn away from those things that fail to glorify you, that I may lead others to your light. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 19, 2010 Author Members Posted December 19, 2010 December 18, 2010 2 Peter 3:1-18 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction 2 Peter 3:1-18: The concluding chapter in this letter focuses on Christ’s return. God promises new heavens and a new earth where God’s righteousness will prevail. Today’s Scripture: 2 Peter 3:13, 14 But we wait for what God has promised: new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will be at home. And so, my friends, as you wait for that Day, do your best to be pure and faultless in God’s sight and to be at peace with him. Today’s Reading 1 My dear friends, this is now the second letter I have written you. In both letters I have tried to arouse pure thoughts in your minds by reminding you of these things. 2 I want you to remember the words that were spoken long ago by the holy prophets, and the command from the Lord and Savior which was given you by your apostles. 3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days some people will appear whose lives are controlled by their own lusts. They will make fun of you 4 and will ask, “He promised to come, didn't he? Where is he? Our ancestors have already died, but everything is still the same as it was since the creation of the world!” 5 They purposely ignore the fact that long ago God gave a command, and the heavens and earth were created. The earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 and it was also by water, the water of the flood, that the old world was destroyed. 7 But the heavens and the earth that now exist are being preserved by the same command of God, in order to be destroyed by fire. They are being kept for the day when godless people will be judged and destroyed. 8 But do not forget one thing, my dear friends! There is no difference in the Lord's sight between one day and a thousand years; to him the two are the same. 9 The Lord is not slow to do what he has promised, as some think. Instead, he is patient with you, because he does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants all to turn away from their sins. 10 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that Day the heavens will disappear with a shrill noise, the heavenly bodies will burn up and be destroyed, and the earth with everything in it will vanish. 11 Since all these things will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people should you be? Your lives should be holy and dedicated to God, 12 as you wait for the Day of God and do your best to make it come soon—the Day when the heavens will burn up and be destroyed, and the heavenly bodies will be melted by the heat. 13 But we wait for what God has promised: new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will be at home. 14 And so, my friends, as you wait for that Day, do your best to be pure and faultless in God's sight and to be at peace with him. 15 Look on our Lord's patience as the opportunity he is giving you to be saved, just as our dear friend Paul wrote to you, using the wisdom that God gave him. 16 This is what he says in all his letters when he writes on the subject. There are some difficult things in his letters which ignorant and unstable people explain falsely, as they do with other passages of the Scriptures. So they bring on their own destruction. 17 But you, my friends, already know this. Be on your guard, then, so that you will not be led away by the errors of lawless people and fall from your safe position. 18 But continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory, now and forever! Amen. Reflect The writer requests everyone not to lose hope and be patient when waiting for the Lord’s return. At the time of this letter, many thought that Christ’s return was immanent. According to the letter, what will the day of the Lord’s return be like? How are followers of Christ to act as they wait for his return? Pray Lord God, you are the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I do not know when you will return, but I know for sure that you will come again. Strengthen my faith and help me to experience your love and grace in your creation. Let your Holy Spirit come and abide in us. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 19, 2010 Author Members Posted December 19, 2010 December 19, 2010 Jude 1:1-25 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Jude: The writer of this short letter is worried about people who claim to be Christ’s followers but who do not live by God’s Word. He encourages the followers of Jesus Christ to defend their faith against those who teach false beliefs and live unscrupulous lives. Today’s Scripture: Jude: 20, 21 But you, my friends, keep on building yourselves up on your most sacred faith. Pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and keep yourselves in the love of God, as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ in his mercy to give you eternal life. Today’s Reading 1 From Jude, servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James— To those who have been called by God, who live in the love of God the Father and the protection of Jesus Christ: 2 May mercy, peace, and love be yours in full measure. 3 My dear friends, I was doing my best to write to you about the salvation we share in common, when I felt the need of writing at once to encourage you to fight on for the faith which once and for all God has given to his people. 4 For some godless people have slipped in unnoticed among us, persons who distort the message about the grace of our God in order to excuse their immoral ways, and who reject Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord. Long ago the Scriptures predicted the condemnation they have received. 5 For even though you know all this, I want to remind you of how the Lord once rescued the people of Israel from Egypt, but afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 Remember the angels who did not stay within the limits of their proper authority, but abandoned their own dwelling place: they are bound with eternal chains in the darkness below, where God is keeping them for that great Day on which they will be condemned. 7 Remember Sodom and Gomorrah, and the nearby towns, whose people acted as those angels did and indulged in sexual immorality and perversion: they suffer the punishment of eternal fire as a plain warning to all. 8 In the same way also, these people have visions which make them sin against their own bodies; they despise God's authority and insult the glorious beings above. 9 Not even the chief angel Michael did this. In his quarrel with the Devil, when they argued about who would have the body of Moses, Michael did not dare condemn the Devil with insulting words, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10 But these people attack with insults anything they do not understand; and those things that they know by instinct, like wild animals, are the very things that destroy them. 11 How terrible for them! They have followed the way that Cain took. For the sake of money they have given themselves over to the error that Balaam committed. They have rebelled as Korah rebelled, and like him they are destroyed. 12 With their shameless carousing they are like dirty spots in your fellowship meals. They take care only of themselves. They are like clouds carried along by the wind, but bringing no rain. They are like trees that bear no fruit, even in autumn, trees that have been pulled up by the roots and are completely dead. 13 They are like wild waves of the sea, with their shameful deeds showing up like foam. They are like wandering stars, for whom God has reserved a place forever in the deepest darkness. 14 It was Enoch, the seventh direct descendant from Adam, who long ago prophesied this about them: “The Lord will come with many thousands of his holy angels 15 to bring judgment on all, to condemn them all for the godless deeds they have performed and for all the terrible words that godless sinners have spoken against him! ” 16 These people are always grumbling and blaming others; they follow their own evil desires; they brag about themselves and flatter others in order to get their own way. 17 But remember, my friends, what you were told in the past by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said to you, “When the last days come, people will appear who will make fun of you, people who follow their own godless desires.” 19 These are the people who cause divisions, who are controlled by their natural desires, who do not have the Spirit. 20 But you, my friends, keep on building yourselves up on your most sacred faith. Pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, 21 and keep yourselves in the love of God, as you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ in his mercy to give you eternal life. 22 Show mercy toward those who have doubts; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; and to others show mercy mixed with fear, but hate their very clothes, stained by their sinful lusts. 24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to bring you faultless and joyful before his glorious presence— 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, might, and authority, from all ages past, and now, and forever and ever! Amen. Reflect The “godless people” were willing to take advantage of God’s kindness and use it as an excuse to behave immorally. Reread v. 21-23. According to the writer, how can the followers of Christ build themselves up in faith? How might these instructions be useful to you? Pray Loving God, you alone can keep me from falling and you alone can bring me into your presence. May glory and majesty be yours, now and forever. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 20, 2010 Author Members Posted December 20, 2010 December 20, 2010 Isaiah 9:1-7 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Isaiah 9:1-7: Today’s passage includes a prophecy. Isaiah says that God’s people will be delivered through divine intervention. God is coming to the people through the birth of a child who will one day be their ruler. As promised, the king of Israel will come from the family of David, and will rule with justice and peace. Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 9:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, but now light is shining on them. Today’s Reading 1 There will be no way for them to escape from this time of trouble. The land of the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali was once disgraced, but the future will bring honor to this region, from the Mediterranean eastward to the land on the other side of the Jordan, and even to Galilee itself, where the foreigners live. 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, but now light is shining on them. 3 You have given them great joy, Lord; you have made them happy. They rejoice in what you have done, as people rejoice when they harvest grain or when they divide captured wealth. 4 For you have broken the yoke that burdened them and the rod that beat their shoulders. You have defeated the nation that oppressed and exploited your people, just as you defeated the army of Midian long ago. 5 The boots of the invading army and all their bloodstained clothing will be destroyed by fire. 6 A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, “Wonderful Counselor,” “Mighty God,” “Eternal Father,” “Prince of Peace.” 7 His royal power will continue to grow; his kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David's successor, basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time. The LORD Almighty is determined to do all this. Reflect What kind of “darkness” does the prophet speak about in v. 2-4? What kind of “light” will shine on the people? What kind of “royal power” will King David’s successor exercise? What will be the nature of his rule? Pray Lord Jesus Christ, come quickly to our darkened world. Shine your light on our nations, uproot injustice from the world, and bring us peace and joy. We long for your advent. Amen. Prayer Concern Pregnant women Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted December 22, 2010 Author Members Posted December 22, 2010 December 21, 2010 Luke 1:1-25 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Luke 1:1-25: The author of Luke dedicates the book to Theophilus (meaning “friend of God”), and then begins the story. An angel appears to an elderly priest and promises that he and his wife will have a son as great as the prophet Elijah. Today’s Scripture: Luke 1:17 “He will go ahead of the Lord, strong and mighty like the prophet Elijah. He will bring fathers and children together again; he will turn disobedient people back to the way of thinking of the righteous; he will get the Lord’s people ready for him.” Today’s Reading 1 Dear Theophilus: Many people have done their best to write a report of the things that have taken place among us. 2 They wrote what we have been told by those who saw these things from the beginning and who proclaimed the message. 3 And so, Your Excellency, because I have carefully studied all these matters from their beginning, I thought it would be good to write an orderly account for you. 4 I do this so that you will know the full truth about everything which you have been taught. 5 During the time when Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife's name was Elizabeth; she also belonged to a priestly family. 6 They both lived good lives in God's sight and obeyed fully all the Lord's laws and commands. 7 They had no children because Elizabeth could not have any, and she and Zechariah were both very old. 8 One day Zechariah was doing his work as a priest in the Temple, taking his turn in the daily service. 9 According to the custom followed by the priests, he was chosen by lot to burn incense on the altar. So he went into the Temple of the Lord, 10 while the crowd of people outside prayed during the hour when the incense was burned. 11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar where the incense was burned. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was alarmed and felt afraid. 13 But the angel said to him, “Don't be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son. You are to name him John. 14 How glad and happy you will be, and how happy many others will be when he is born! 15 John will be great in the Lord's sight. He must not drink any wine or strong drink. From his very birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, 16 and he will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will go ahead of the Lord, strong and mighty like the prophet Elijah. He will bring fathers and children together again; he will turn disobedient people back to the way of thinking of the righteous; he will get the Lord's people ready for him. ” 18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know if this is so? I am an old man, and my wife is old also.” 19 “I am Gabriel,” the angel answered. “I stand in the presence of God, who sent me to speak to you and tell you this good news. 20 But you have not believed my message, which will come true at the right time. Because you have not believed, you will be unable to speak; you will remain silent until the day my promise to you comes true. ” 21 In the meantime the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he was spending such a long time in the Temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them, and so they knew that he had seen a vision in the Temple. Unable to say a word, he made signs to them with his hands. 23 When his period of service in the Temple was over, Zechariah went back home. 24 Some time later his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and did not leave the house for five months. 25 “Now at last the Lord has helped me,” she said. “He has taken away my public disgrace!” Reflect Why do you think Gabriel is upset when Zechariah asks for proof that he is to have a son? What other elderly couple in the Bible had a son in their old age? How should Zechariah have responded to the angel’s words? Have you ever failed to notice a sign from God and doubted his plan for you? Pray Creator God, thank you for sending your word ahead so that we would come to know your Son. Give us the courage and faith to see the signs of your advent and to proclaim the way of your peace. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 22, 2010 Author Members Posted December 22, 2010 December 22, 2010 Luke 1:26-56 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Luke 1:26-56: In today’s passage, the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she will have a son named Jesus, who will be a great and eternal ruler. Then Mary visits Elizabeth, and they experience the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Mary sings a song of praise, celebrating God’s mercy and care. Today’s Scripture: Luke 1:48b – 50 “From now on all people will call me happy, because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him.” Today’s Reading 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth. 27 He had a message for a young woman promised in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David. Her name was Mary. 28 The angel came to her and said, “Peace be with you! The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!” 29 Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message, and she wondered what his words meant. 30 The angel said to her, “Don't be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to you. 31 You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king, as his ancestor David was, 33 and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end! ” 34 Mary said to the angel, “I am a virgin. How, then, can this be?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God's power will rest upon you. For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God. 36 Remember your relative Elizabeth. It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old. 37 For there is nothing that God cannot do. ” 38 “I am the Lord's servant,” said Mary; “may it happen to me as you have said.” And the angel left her. 39 Soon afterward Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea. 40 She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and said in a loud voice, “You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord's mother comes to visit me? 44 For as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness. 45 How happy you are to believe that the Lord's message to you will come true! ” 46 Mary said, “My heart praises the Lord; 47 my soul is glad because of God my Savior, 48 for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me happy, 49 because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me. His name is holy; 50 from one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honor him. 51 He has stretched out his mighty arm and scattered the proud with all their plans. 52 He has brought down mighty kings from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with empty hands. 54 He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors, and has come to the help of his servant Israel. 55 He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham and to all his descendants forever!” 56 Mary stayed about three months with Elizabeth and then went back home. Reflect Reread 1:46-55. Mary’s song is a prayer that praises God. It is similar to Hannah’s song when God gave her a son (1 Samuel 2:1-10). Mary’s song is called the Magnificat, which is Latin for, “magnify.” This song introduces an important theme in Luke: God is a friend of the poor and humble. Which lines in Mary’s song are most poignant to you? Why? Pray All-powerful God, you have done great things and your name is holy. Thank you for your mercy and your care for those who hunger for righteousness, and for the humble. Bless and protect your people around the world today. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 23, 2010 Author Members Posted December 23, 2010 December 23, 2010 Luke 1:57-80 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Luke 1:57-80: When the angel appeared to Zechariah and told him that his wife Elizabeth would bear him a son in their old age, Zechariah doubted and subsequently lost his voice. In today’s passage the child is born, and they name him John. Immediately Zechariah regains his voice. He praises the Lord for fulfilling his promises and offers a vision of what his son would do. Today’s Scripture: Luke 1:78, 79 “Our God is merciful and tender. He will cause the bright dawn of salvation to rise on us and to shine from heaven on all those who live in the dark shadow of death, to guide our steps into the path of peace.” Today’s Reading 57 The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard how wonderfully good the Lord had been to her, and they all rejoiced with her. 59 When the baby was a week old, they came to circumcise him, and they were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. 60 But his mother said, “No! His name is to be John.” 61 They said to her, “But you don't have any relative with that name!” 62 Then they made signs to his father, asking him what name he would like the boy to have. 63 Zechariah asked for a writing pad and wrote, “His name is John.” How surprised they all were! 64 At that moment Zechariah was able to speak again, and he started praising God. 65 The neighbors were all filled with fear, and the news about these things spread through all the hill country of Judea. 66 Everyone who heard of it thought about it and asked, “What is this child going to be?” For it was plain that the Lord's power was upon him. 67 John's father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he spoke God's message: 68 “Let us praise the Lord, the God of Israel! He has come to the help of his people and has set them free. 69 He has provided for us a mighty Savior, a descendant of his servant David. 70 He promised through his holy prophets long ago 71 that he would save us from our enemies, from the power of all those who hate us. 72 He said he would show mercy to our ancestors and remember his sacred covenant. 73-74 With a solemn oath to our ancestor Abraham he promised to rescue us from our enemies and allow us to serve him without fear, 75 so that we might be holy and righteous before him all the days of our life. 76 You, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his road for him, 77 to tell his people that they will be saved by having their sins forgiven. 78 Our God is merciful and tender. He will cause the bright dawn of salvation to rise on us 79 and to shine from heaven on all those who live in the dark shadow of death, to guide our steps into the path of peace.” Reflect When Zechariah first learns that Elizabeth is going to have a baby, he can hardly believe it. His doubt casts him into silence and he goes dumb until the child is born. After John was born and about to be circumcised, at the naming ceremony, Zechariah’s voice is restored and he proclaims a new vision of hope for the fulfillment of God’s promises. What did it mean for Zechariah to lose and recover his voice? Does this event connect to your life in any way? Pray Holy God, there are times when I doubt your plans for me. I fail to recognize your promises and your guidance. Grant me the faith and wisdom to discern your will for me. Help me to find my voice, that I may speak your word and sing your praises. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 24, 2010 Author Members Posted December 24, 2010 December 24, 2010 Luke 2:1-20 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Luke 2:1-20: Joseph and Mary travel to Bethlehem. Mary gives birth to Jesus and lays the baby in a manger because there is no room for them in the local inn. That night, an angel of the Lord appears to some shepherds who were taking care of their flocks in fields nearby and tells them that a Savior has been born. They rush to Bethlehem where they find Mary, Joseph and the baby. Today’s Scripture: Luke 2:10, 11 Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. This very day in David’s town your Savior was born – Christ the Lord! Today’s Reading 1 At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria. 3 Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown. 4 Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David. 5 He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant, 6 and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby. 7 She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger—there was no room for them to stay in the inn. 8 There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, 10 but the angel said to them, “Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. 11 This very day in David's town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord! 12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. ” 13 Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God: 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!” 15 When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger. 17 When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child. 18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said. 19 Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them. 20 The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them. Reflect In this passage, joy and excitement fill the shepherds. How did they go from terror to joy so quickly? What did they hear and see that changed their minds? Dwell on the angels’ words. What feelings do they bring in you? Pray Lord God, my heart is filled with joy when I think of how you sent your Son to us, in humility and in glory. I praise you and thank you for the birth of Jesus Christ my savior, and pray that he will be reborn in my heart this Advent. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 25, 2010 Author Members Posted December 25, 2010 December 25, 2010 John 1:1-18 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction John 1:1-18: The first chapter of John describes Jesus – the Word of God in human form. The Word was with God when God created and gave life to everything. The Word became human and makes God the Father known to all people. John the Baptist proclaimed that Jesus Christ is indeed the “real light” – the Messiah and the Son of God. Today’s Scripture: John 1:14 The Word became a human being and, full of grace and truth, lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father’s only Son. Today’s Reading 1 In the beginning the Word already existed; the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 From the very beginning the Word was with God. 3 Through him God made all things; not one thing in all creation was made without him. 4 The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out. 6 God sent his messenger, a man named John, 7 who came to tell people about the light, so that all should hear the message and believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came to tell about the light. 9 This was the real light—the light that comes into the world and shines on all people. 10 The Word was in the world, and though God made the world through him, yet the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own country, but his own people did not receive him. 12 Some, however, did receive him and believed in him; so he gave them the right to become God's children. 13 They did not become God's children by natural means, that is, by being born as the children of a human father; God himself was their Father. 14 The Word became a human being and, full of grace and truth, lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father's only Son. 15 John spoke about him. He cried out, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, “He comes after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.” ” 16 Out of the fullness of his grace he has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another. 17 God gave the Law through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is the same as God and is at the Father's side, he has made him known. Reflect “The Word was the source of life, and this life brought light to all people” (v. 4). Has this life found you in the midst of the darkness of the world? Are you able to see his light? Today, take time give thanks to Jesus Christ, the Word of God, for coming into our world. Pray Living Word, you entered into the world and revealed God’s glory in new ways. Through you, Jesus Christ, we have experienced undeserved kindness and truth. May your light shine through me, that I may become a vessel of God’s grace and peace. Lord, thank you for your love. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 26, 2010 Author Members Posted December 26, 2010 December 26, 2010 Luke 2:21-40 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Luke 2:21-40: The baby Jesus was taken to Jerusalem to be presented to the Lord. In the Temple, Simeon offers a prayer of thanks and prophesizes of the salvation that is to come through Christ. He tells Mary that she will suffer – a foretelling of all that is to happen to Jesus. Then Anna arrives and gives thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were hoping and waiting for God to set Jerusalem free. After the required rituals, Joseph and Mary return home to Nazareth, where Jesus grows up. Today’s Scripture: Luke 2:30-32 “With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles and bring glory to your people Israel.” Today’s Reading 21 A week later, when the time came for the baby to be circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given him before he had been conceived. 22 The time came for Joseph and Mary to perform the ceremony of purification, as the Law of Moses commanded. So they took the child to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, 23 as it is written in the law of the Lord: “Every first-born male is to be dedicated to the Lord.” 24 They also went to offer a sacrifice of a pair of doves or two young pigeons, as required by the law of the Lord. 25 At that time there was a man named Simeon living in Jerusalem. He was a good, God-fearing man and was waiting for Israel to be saved. The Holy Spirit was with him 26 and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah. 27 Led by the Spirit, Simeon went into the Temple. When the parents brought the child Jesus into the Temple to do for him what the Law required, 28 Simeon took the child in his arms and gave thanks to God: 29 “Now, Lord, you have kept your promise, and you may let your servant go in peace. 30 With my own eyes I have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: 32 A light to reveal your will to the Gentiles and bring glory to your people Israel.” 33 The child's father and mother were amazed at the things Simeon said about him. 34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, “This child is chosen by God for the destruction and the salvation of many in Israel. He will be a sign from God which many people will speak against 35 and so reveal their secret thoughts. And sorrow, like a sharp sword, will break your own heart. ” 36-37 There was a very old prophet, a widow named Anna, daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She had been married for only seven years and was now eighty-four years old. She never left the Temple; day and night she worshiped God, fasting and praying. 38 That very same hour she arrived and gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were waiting for God to set Jerusalem free. 39 When Joseph and Mary had finished doing all that was required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to their hometown of Nazareth in Galilee. Reflect Luke is the only Gospel which gives some events from Jesus’ childhood or youth. What might Jesus have been like as a child? What might he have done for fun? Do you think his parents ever had to discipline him? How do you think he was like or different from other children? Pray Loving God, thank you for the child Jesus, who lived and laughed and played among children. Bless all the children of the world that they may come to know your love through Jesus. Amen. When he sees Jesus, he calls him the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He tells how he saw the Spirit come down on Jesus like a dove. Andrew hears what John says, follows Jesus and talks to Peter about him. Then Jesus chooses Philip and Nathaniel to become disciples as well. Today’s Scripture: John 1:29, 30 “There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.’” Today’s Reading 19 The Jewish authorities in Jerusalem sent some priests and Levites to John to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 John did not refuse to answer, but spoke out openly and clearly, saying: “I am not the Messiah.” 21 “Who are you, then?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No, I am not,” John answered. “Are you the Prophet?” they asked. “No,” he replied. 22 “Then tell us who you are,” they said. “We have to take an answer back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself” 23 John answered by quoting the prophet Isaiah: “I am ‘the voice of someone shouting in the desert: Make a straight path for the Lord to travel!’” 24 The messengers, who had been sent by the Pharisees, 25 then asked John, “If you are not the Messiah nor Elijah nor the Prophet, why do you baptize?” 26 John answered, “I baptize with water, but among you stands the one you do not know. 27 He is coming after me, but I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. ” 28 All this happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I was talking about when I said, “A man is coming after me, but he is greater than I am, because he existed before I was born.” 31 I did not know who he would be, but I came baptizing with water in order to make him known to the people of Israel. ” 32 And John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and stay on him. 33 I still did not know that he was the one, but God, who sent me to baptize with water, had said to me, “You will see the Spirit come down and stay on a man; he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” 34 I have seen it, ” said John, “and I tell you that he is the Son of God.” 35 The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples, 36 when he saw Jesus walking by. “There is the Lamb of God!” he said. 37 The two disciples heard him say this and went with Jesus. 38 Jesus turned, saw them following him, and asked, “What are you looking for?” They answered, “Where do you live, Rabbi?” (This word means “Teacher.”) 39 “Come and see,” he answered. (It was then about four o'clock in the afternoon.) So they went with him and saw where he lived, and spent the rest of that day with him. 40 One of them was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 At once he found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah.” (This word means “Christ.”) 42 Then he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “Your name is Simon son of John, but you will be called Cephas.” (This is the same as Peter and means “a rock.”) 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come with me!” ( 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, the town where Andrew and Peter lived.) 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the book of the Law and whom the prophets also wrote about. He is Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth. ” 46 “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” answered Philip. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, he said about him, “Here is a real Israelite; there is nothing false in him!” 48 Nathanael asked him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you when you were under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 “Teacher,” answered Nathanael, “you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus said, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you when you were under the fig tree? You will see much greater things than this!” 51 And he said to them, “I am telling you the truth: you will see heaven open and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of Man.” Reflect What are the names and titles given to Jesus in this passage? What makes each of these names and titles important? Why do you think John felt so strongly about Jesus’ identity? Why did Andrew and Peter decide to follow Jesus? Why have you decided to follow Jesus? Pray Jesus Christ, I want to follow you like Andrew and Peter. Show me your way, that I may follow you always and experience your grace and love. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 29, 2010 Author Members Posted December 29, 2010 December 28, 2010 John 2:1-12 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction John 2:1-12: Today’s reading recounts the first of seven miracles performed by Jesus in the book of John. Each of these miracles point to Jesus as the true Messiah, the Son of God. In this passage, Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding feast in Cana. Today’s Scripture: John 2:10 “Everyone else serves the best wine first, and after the guests have drunk a lot, he serves the ordinary wine. But you have kept the best wine until now!” Today’s Reading 1 Two days later there was a wedding in the town of Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine had given out, Jesus' mother said to him, “They are out of wine.” 4 “You must not tell me what to do,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” 5 Jesus' mother then told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 The Jews have rules about ritual washing, and for this purpose six stone water jars were there, each one large enough to hold between twenty and thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill these jars with water.” They filled them to the brim, 8 and then he told them, “Now draw some water out and take it to the man in charge of the feast.” They took him the water, 9 which now had turned into wine, and he tasted it. He did not know where this wine had come from (but, of course, the servants who had drawn out the water knew); so he called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone else serves the best wine first, and after the guests have drunk a lot, he serves the ordinary wine. But you have kept the best wine until now!” 11 Jesus performed this first miracle in Cana in Galilee; there he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. 12 After this, Jesus and his mother, brothers, and disciples went to Capernaum and stayed there a few days. Reflect Reread v. 4. Jesus was referring to the time of his death and resurrection, when his true glory, as Son of God would be realized. How might the disciples have received his words? What might have they thought after he turned the water into wine? Pray Lord Jesus Christ, just as you transformed water into wine, transform my life by your love and grace so that I might bring joy to this world. Members phkrause Posted December 29, 2010 Author Members Posted December 29, 2010 December 29, 2010 John 3.1-21 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction John 3.1-21: Jesus teaches that all people who have faith in him will have eternal life in God’s kingdom. God’s kingdom is not just simply any place, but it is where God’s people do what God wants them to do, sharing God’s love and grace with others. Today’s Scripture: John 3:16 For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. Today’s Reading 1 There was a Jewish leader named Nicodemus, who belonged to the party of the Pharisees. 2 One night he went to Jesus and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher sent by God. No one could perform the miracles you are doing unless God were with him.” 3 Jesus answered, “I am telling you the truth: no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born again.” 4 “How can a grown man be born again?” Nicodemus asked. “He certainly cannot enter his mother's womb and be born a second time!” 5 “I am telling you the truth,” replied Jesus, “that no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 A person is born physically of human parents, but is born spiritually of the Spirit. 7 Do not be surprised because I tell you that you must all be born again. 8 The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. It is like that with everyone who is born of the Spirit. ” 9 “How can this be?” asked Nicodemus. 10 Jesus answered, “You are a great teacher in Israel, and you don't know this? 11 I am telling you the truth: we speak of what we know and report what we have seen, yet none of you is willing to accept our message. 12 You do not believe me when I tell you about the things of this world; how will you ever believe me, then, when I tell you about the things of heaven? 13 And no one has ever gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from heaven. ” 14 As Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the desert, in the same way the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its savior. 18 Those who believe in the Son are not judged; but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they have not believed in God's only Son. 19 This is how the judgment works: the light has come into the world, but people love the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds are evil. 20 Those who do evil things hate the light and will not come to the light, because they do not want their evil deeds to be shown up. 21 But those who do what is true come to the light in order that the light may show that what they did was in obedience to God. Reflect Christians in New Testament times believed that God’s people would be raised to a new life because God raised Jesus from death. What does eternal life mean to you? Pray Eternal God, thank you for giving me the possibility of a new life beyond this earthly life, through the death and resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to grow in faithfulness, that I may live in accordance with the rules of your kingdom and share the Good News of eternal life with others. Amen. Members phkrause Posted December 30, 2010 Author Members Posted December 30, 2010 December 30, 2010 Hebrews 1:1-14 (Good News Translation) Embodying Hope and Spreading Joy to Everyone Introduction Hebrews 1:1-14: Today we read from the book of Hebrews. The author tells us that God spoke to our ancestors through prophets, but now he speaks to us through his Son. It is through Jesus Christ that God created the universe and it is Jesus Christ who reflects the glory of God. He also brought about the forgiveness of sins for all human beings and then took his rightful seat at the right side of God, who reigns supreme. Today’s Scripture: Hebrews 1:3 He reflects the brightness of God’s glory and is the exact likeness of God’s own being, sustaining the universe with his powerful word. After achieving forgiveness for the sins of all human beings, he sat down in heaven at the right side of God, the Supreme Power. Today’s Reading 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many ways through the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us through his Son. He is the one through whom God created the universe, the one whom God has chosen to possess all things at the end. 3 He reflects the brightness of God's glory and is the exact likeness of God's own being, sustaining the universe with his powerful word. After achieving forgiveness for the sins of all human beings, he sat down in heaven at the right side of God, the Supreme Power. 4 The Son was made greater than the angels, just as the name that God gave him is greater than theirs. 5 For God never said to any of his angels, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” Nor did God say about any angel, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.” 6 But when God was about to send his first-born Son into the world, he said, “All of God's angels must worship him.” 7 But about the angels God said, “God makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire.” 8 About the Son, however, God said: “Your kingdom, O God, will last forever and ever! You rule over your people with justice. 9 You love what is right and hate what is wrong. That is why God, your God, has chosen you and has given you the joy of an honor far greater than he gave to your companions.” 10 He also said, “You, Lord, in the beginning created the earth, and with your own hands you made the heavens. 11 They will disappear, but you will remain; they will all wear out like clothes. 12 You will fold them up like a coat, and they will be changed like clothes. But you are always the same, and your life never ends.” 13 God never said to any of his angels: “Sit here at my right side until I put your enemies as a footstool under your feet.” 14 What are the angels, then? They are spirits who serve God and are sent by him to help those who are to receive salvation. Reflect Reread 1:1-3. God is clearly a God who speaks and makes his will known to humankind. And now he speaks through his Son, who is the creator, the brightness of God’s glory, the exact image of God’s own being and our Sustainer, Redeemer, and King. Are you heeding the words of Christ? Without him, there is no going to God. Without him, there is no knowing God. Pray Lord God, thank you for speaking to us through your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to keep him as the center of our lives. Enable us to trust in him, love him and worship him all the days of our lives. Amen.
