Dr. Shane Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Well there is a reason the internet is called the information highway. It has had a profound impact on society, hasn't it? US incarceration for a large part, is due to law enforcement. Many countries just don't enforce their laws. I think we could empty out a lot of our prisons by using house arrest for non-violent criminals. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

Members phkrause Posted December 12, 2009 Members Posted December 12, 2009 Why would that be political Redwood? Unless someone mention's the D or R words it wont be! pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Well ... I would be happy to use your definition pk ... but I fear it would not hold water here. I have yet to see a definition of political. But even if one were to define it I fear that it would need constant revisions. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members phkrause Posted December 12, 2009 Members Posted December 12, 2009 I do understand what your saying Redwood. But I believe that we or at least to many make everything political. Politics should be left to its own thing not into other sectors of life. If you don't mention it than maybe it can stay hidden somewhere else. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 I honestly don't know what the word 'political' means. I suspect it means something different to each person. Thus the confusion. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members phkrause Posted December 12, 2009 Members Posted December 12, 2009 I agree to a certain extent, like I mentioned I think to many people make every issue political when in real life only politcians should be political. Like we say in church, well that person got the job because of politics, when in reality it was favortism (sp) that got the person that job. Or even nepotism. I believe we've expanded the word to cover all facets of life as we know it, and I think that is sad, that we've allowed this. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Woody Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 I think we can discuss it here until it gets moved. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Yeah, but then you would have released murderers, rapists, and thieves breaking in to your house everyday and stealing your stuff, when you go to work, and raping your wife on her way to work everyday. Or at least twice a week. Quote
Dr. Shane Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Technology has taken us to a point where nonviolent criminals really shouldn't be in prison. We can put a GPS device on them and let them go to work, church, home, 12-step group, etc. Specific routes are programed into a map with given times when and where he or she should be at all times. Since the offender is working, he or she actually has to pay to be on home arrest. If he or she goes off her route, they go to jail for a specified period (30, 60, 90 days). At the end of the jail time they go back to house arrest. As long as they never commit a violent offense, they never go to prison. However failure to work and pay for their house arrest of fines and restitution could also land them back in jail for up to a year - but only with other non-violent offenders. The problem with sending thieves and non-violent drug offenders to prison is they actually learn how to become better criminals and violent ones. And of course, it costs a lot of money. GreatLakesGramma Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 My friend, whose husband is in jail for something he didn't do, has to pay $20 per day room and board for him. Plus any toiletries and such that he might need, he has to buy them at a very high price from the commissary. If he wanted a radio or TV, he'd have to pay an extremely inflated price to buy that from the commissary too. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Outta Here Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Wow. Prices must be different where your friend is than the prices here. My husband works for a prison retailer. His company buys the clear, shatter-proof televisions from the manufacturer for about $35. Then, they sell them to the prisons for about $50. The prisons then sell them to the prisoners for $100-$175. Quote
Members phkrause Posted December 14, 2009 Members Posted December 14, 2009 Exactly Richard, if not in prison than where? You can't just not have prison's just because. And I'm not sure that we don't cover the cost or maintenance of each prisoner, but maybe I'm wrong. pk Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. GreatLakesGramma Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I don't know what the exact prices are Aubrey, but they are much higher than it would cost to buy the same item in a local store. Actually, once they would get a judgment against them their mansions would be sold to pay restitution and they would end up living in some apartment they could afford with whatever salary they would be earning. The court could garnish their wages up to a given percentage, based on their salaries, that is set by the legislature. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Unless the lien is because of work or expense related to the home itself a lien is not valid if challenged. A hearing before a judge will lift any inappropriate lien Many people pay the lien or judgment not realizing what the homested act actually says Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this. Quotes by Susan Gottesman
