Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 What do you think? And a follow up ... Should SDAs celebrate a White History Month? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
SivartM Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Why shouldn't we? Of course, you never hear about Dental Health month or anything. I think we should celebrate that also. Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Yes. And what about Ground Hog Day. After all ... are we not suppose to present the Health Message. Eating Hogs is not within our beliefs. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators lazarus Posted February 2, 2010 Moderators Posted February 2, 2010 What do you think? And a follow up ... Should SDAs celebrate a White History Month? They do all the time. Haven't we discussed this before? Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
Liz Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 We are not eating the hogs Uncle Woody, we are just waiting for them to pop up out of their little holes, so we can go on with a superstitious belief. As for the original topic, I am not sure how you celebrate a whole month? Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Mat. 16:26Please, support the JDRF and help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Please, support the March of Dimes.
Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Well ... Just like Christmas, Valentines Day and Ground Hog Day ... it comes around each year. And we discuss it. Why is there no objection to discussing Ground Hog Day once again. Why is there only objections to a discussion of giving blacks there due? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 We are not eating the hogs Uncle Woody Yes. Good Point. But we are coveting them aren't we? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members abelisle Posted February 2, 2010 Members Posted February 2, 2010 What do you think? And a follow up ... Should SDAs celebrate a White History Month? I'm curious. What's the motivation for asking this question? And I'm also curious to find out how many members of this forum are "black"? Especially considering the fact that the majority of the urban churches (and probably Adventist churches as a whole in the NAD) are black or Latino. I'm relatively new here but from the posts I've read, there seems (just an intuitive feeling I get) that the voices I hear in the rhetoric I read are mainly from non-blacks??? karl Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Which country do you want Adventists to celebrate the Black History month in? I think a Yellow History month would be particularly apropos in, say, China, Taiwan, Singapore. Quote
olger Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I'm holding out for a roofer history month. That indeed would be an event worth celebrating. Gerry (all German, all man) Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."

Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Quote: And I'm also curious to find out how many members of this forum are "black"? I consider myself a 'brother'. When I fill out the forms that ask for ethnic considerations ... I check 'black'. Of course ... black as we have evidenced with Obama ... is any amount of black in your background and I figure that most of us in American must have some. Yes, it might go WAY back. But hey ... we are still black. We're all brothers man. So, I proudly claim some black in there somewhere. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Members abelisle Posted February 2, 2010 Members Posted February 2, 2010 Obviously, people don't want to respond to my question or they simply don't know? Stan, can you answer my question? Considering the very large "minority" membership of the Adventist church, is it reflected in the ethnic makeup of the members who post the most here? Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 2, 2010 Members Posted February 2, 2010 What do you think? And a follow up ... Should SDAs celebrate a White History Month? Why *should* we celebrate black history month? We don't celebrate Jewish history month. Or Polish history month. Or Irish history month. Or German history month. Or Swedish history month. Or... or... or... We've already had Martin Luther King Birthday holiday. Interestingly, we no longer celebrate George Washington's birthday or Abraham Lincoln's birthday... Should SDA's celebrate a white history month? No comment. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Alex. No one knows what ethnic background all of us have. There is no requirement to disclose it... nor should there be. Whether we are black or white simply does not matter. We are brothers in Christ. That is the only family needed. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Quote: "I'm puzzled" Dear Puzzled: I ask the question because not everyone believes as I do and I believe that open discussions are valuable. Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 dgrimm ... you are so kind and considerate. What a great idea. And besides ... just think of all the celebrating we could do. Cake every week. HA HA HA HO HO HO HE HE HE Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members abelisle Posted February 2, 2010 Members Posted February 2, 2010 Dear Puzzled: I ask the question because not everyone believes as I do and I believe that open discussions are valuable. That is what we do here ... discuss. Dear Woody, This is why I'm asking the question. We worship in a denomination that is de facto segregated and historically racist up until relatively recently in our history. Unless you are a person of color or a member of a minority, I don't think we can understand what it feels like to be tacitly or overtly a victim of prejudice, whether it is outright or implied. When I read your question, I also read an implied racial prejudice that said "why should blacks have a month to celebrate their history?" And yes other ethnic groups should have theirs also, but sad to say it is Afro-American blacks who suffered the most both within and without of the Church. Adventism's history in its relationship to blacks is not something to be proud of and even today our de facto segregated Conferences are a stumbling block for the educated middle and upper class indigenous "anglos" who are possibly interested in becoming Adventists. Let the discussion begin with a minimum of "dissing" please Alex Quote We are our worst enemy - sad but true. http://abelisle.blogspot.com
Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Alex ... we are all a member of a minority group in some way or another. Yes ... our church is segregated. But we do not need to let these divisions or past discriminations get in the way of our God given mission. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Quote: Let the discussion begin with a minimum of "dissing" Well ... "dissing" is in the eye of the beholder. But in the eyes of this beholder ... you are the only one bringing dissing. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Quote: I also read an implied racial prejudice We really don't need this kind of 'dissing' in this thread. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
teresaq Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 i find it insulting to blacks, personally. all year everyone is presented and then come feb, "oh and by the way these people also did some stuff". it seems to me that the accomplishments of blacks, as well as any other "ethnic" group, should be "integrated" with the supposed achievements of the ones usually presented. Quote facebook. /teresa.quintero.790
Woody Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Good Point Teresa. We need integration not only in our church but also in society. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
