GreatLakesGramma Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Is there a time to stop dyeing your hair? Like when your face looks much older than your hair does? Maybe, maybe not. As someone mentioned, your complexion changes as you age, nature's way of matching it to the changing hair color. I think nice, pure white hair can be beautiful, but I doubt mine ever will be, because our water is full of iron, and it yellows my hair. Anyway, if someone doesn't have nice white or gray hair and wants to improve it, she should lighten her color as she ages, or she will look really old. I've seen some wrinkled older women with dark black hair that looks absolutely ghastly. I love my salt and pepper hair, even though the salt is a little yellowed. I wear it long, and so long as it doesn't get frizzy, it looks like it's been highlighted. People pay good money to do that to their hair. I don't need to. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis

Administrators Gail Posted February 17, 2010 Author Administrators Posted February 17, 2010 Right on, GLG. I say the same about ladies' cosmetics. The colours should be more subtle as the complexion (and hair colour) lightens. That includes black mascara. I have nightmarish pictures in my head of an aging Bette Davis... Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 For sure, Gail. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis

Administrators Gail Posted February 17, 2010 Author Administrators Posted February 17, 2010 I wouldn't doubt it... I've heard that parabens have a drying effect (they can be found even in moisterizers) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Liz Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 What is a "paraben", so our moisturizers are actually drying our skin out? So what does the label need to say, in order to know that you have a "real" moisturizer? Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? GreatLakesGramma Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Parabens are preservatives. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
Administrators Gail Posted February 17, 2010 Author Administrators Posted February 17, 2010 Yeah, Liz- that was the point, I guess! It was a colleague at work that first told me about them. I've noticed that in the last year or so, few months anyway, that there are more products available WITHOUT parabens. Avon is getting better, and the line I'm using now for my moisturizer, Avène, doesn't use them. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted February 17, 2010 Author Administrators Posted February 17, 2010 Catherine is right, they are used as preservatives. Also- I had stopped using Body Shop products because of this issue. At Christmastime I dropped into our local BS and asked them about a couple items, and mentioned to the girl that I was avoiding parabens. I'm glad to say that Body Shop had dropped them from their list of ingredients from the items I checked out! The girl told me that every day she has someone asking about them. So I guess I'm not the only one boycotting them! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Since I mentioned my hair, I thought I'd show you what I meant. I don't post photos of myself here, so I edited it a bit. It used to be a dark ash brown, but I like it this color a lot better. It's a little longer in the back. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. Liz Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Thanks ya'll, I learned something new, and will now look out for them. GLG, I love your hair!!! Moderators Gerr Posted February 17, 2010 Moderators Posted February 17, 2010 Do you know why women's faces tend to wrinkle more than a man's as they grow older? It's because the bones of the face in women start to shrink and as they become smaller, more wrinkles develop. Also, did you know that hair dye has been linked to Alzheimers disease? I read that in one of my medical journals. The darker the dye, the higher the probability is for Alzheimers. Just some trivia. You mean a woman's skull gets smaller and their brain shrink that much more? Quote
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Thanks, Liz. I cut it myself. It's about the easiest haircut ever, even though it probably doesn't look like it. Liz Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 You mean a woman's skull gets smaller and their brain shrink that much more? Oooooohhh, Neil, I can't believe you said that!!! Moderators Gerr Posted February 17, 2010 Moderators Posted February 17, 2010 What happens to men's bones? Judging from the fact that certain physiological processes go in opposite directions as men and women age, I would say that men's heads become swollen because the skull gets bigger. When couples are young, it is the woman that gets that 9 month pregnancy silhouette. Sometime after 50, the roles are reversed. When young, females have more trouble voiding. When they get old, then they have trouble controlling it. For men it's the opposite. When young, no trouble voiding. When they get old, then they have trouble peeing. So, yes, I think men's heads would get bigger, and the women's smaller. Quote
