WayneV Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Quick Response to ALL: We recently had a memory verse competition among our men's discipleship class. We were to learn one preselected passage each week for six weeks and be prepared for a quiz at the end of six weeks. Some of the men did really well, memorizing all six passages. Some only memorized one. While only one person was awarded the prize, EVERYONE benefitted. Even the person who memorized only one passage now knows a passage of Scripture that he did not previously know. So someone explain to me how that makes him a loser??? The same applies to sports. If everyone works hard to prepare, they all benefit health-wise from that preparation. Spelling bees are good too. Every person preparing for the bee expands their lexicon of the langauge. Maybe everyone does not get to take home a prize, but I do not see any losers in these situations. Agape` Quote WayneV Just remember these words of warning, for they will come to pass all too soon: If you are ever flying through the desert and your canoe breaks down, remember that it takes three pancakes to lift the doghouse, because there ain't nary a bone in ice cream!

But in others there can be a very big problem. It depends on what kind of competition it is, but it also depends in part on the individuals involved. If a child gets his parents' approval only when he excels, he can grow up feeling he has to always be the best, or he is worth nothing at all. It's hard for such a person to ever admit he made a mistake or did something wrong, or to apologize for anything. It's even harder for that person to admit that he can't save himself, and to accept salvation as a free gift. Probably everyone here has known someone like that. GreatLakesGramma Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 If everyone equally benefits, then it is not a competition and no prize should be given. That's true. But since the Bible verse competition was a competition, and one person did take home a prize, then even though they all benefited, there is always the possibility that at least one of them left with a wrong attitude over not being the best. The competition may have been intended to benefit everyone, but since it was handled as a competition, there was that possibility. Moderators Bravus Posted February 28, 2010 Moderators Posted February 28, 2010 Maybe the problem is trying to use simplistic formulae to deal with a complex phenomenon. Seems to me there's a wide range of types and levels of competition for a wide range of purposes, and that some are harmful and some beneficial. A simplistic 'no competition, ever ever' stance makes life simple but fails to capture the benefits of 'good' competition. Quote Truth is important
Ted Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 As a church, I agree that we are too literal, too judgemental. But this general statement does not, cannot apply to individual members. Ted Quote GnuPG/PGP key: 0xB07F9AAE

hch Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 What is judgmental? Is it discernment? Keeping good company can keep us out of trouble. So are we judgmental if we choose not to associate with some people? Or is Judgmental, putting others down so that we can look good? If that is what this is about, then that is PRIDE (petty righteous individual deprived of eternity) with I right in the wrong place. Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted February 28, 2010 Members Posted February 28, 2010 IMHO, any time someone is intentionally and needlessly hurt, then the perpetrator has sinned and will have to answer to God. Competition, such as professional boxing, I don't know... it's sort of like the Romans had their spectator sports of watching Christians being attacked by lions in an arena. Of course that was sinful. I don't like competition. That's a personal issue with me, and I didn't appreciate Redwood's comment about becoming a monk and moving to a far away place. That was a stupid thing to write. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup.
