Someone recently sent this list of notes/comments about the healthcare bill to my email -

===============================================

Senator Bayh,

As a practicing physician I have major concerns with the health care bill before Congress. I actually have read the bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the government's proposed involvement in the patient-physician relationship. The very idea that the government will dictate and ration patient care is dangerous and certainly not helpful in designing a health care system that works for all. Every physician I work with agrees that we need to fix our health care system, but the proposed bills currently making their way through congress will be a disaster if passed.

I ask you respectfully and as a patriotic American to look at the following troubling lines that I have read in the bill. You cannot possibly believe that these proposals are in the best interests of the country and our fellow citizens.

Page 22 of the HC Bill: Mandates that the Govt will audit books of all employers that self-insure!!

Page 30 Sec 123 of HC bill: THERE WILL BE A GOVT COMMITTEE that decides what treatments/benefits you get.

Page 29 lines 4-16 in the HC bill: YOUR HEALTH CARE IS RATIONED!!!

Page 145 Line 15-17: An Employer MUST auto-enroll employees into public option plan. (NO choice!)

Page 126 Lines 22-25: Employers MUST pay for HC for part-time employees ANDtheir families. (Employees shouldn't get excited about this as employers will be forced to reduce its work force, benefits, and wages/salaries to cover such a huge expense.)

Page 149 Lines 16-24: ANY Employer with payroll 401k & above who does not provide public option will pay 8% tax on all payroll! (See the last comment in parenthesis.)

Page 354 Sec 1177: The Govt will RESTRICT enrollment of 'special needs people!' Unbelievable!

Page 379 Sec 1191: The Govt creates more bureaucracy via a "Tele-Health Advisory Committee." (Can you say HC by phone?)

Page 425 Lines 4-12: The Govt mandates "Advance-Care Planning Consult." (Think senior citizens end-of-life patients.)

Page 425 Lines 17-19: The Govt will instruct and consult regarding living wills, durable powers of attorney, etc. (And it's mandatory!)

Page 425 Lines 22-25, 426 Lines 1-3: The Govt provides an "approved" list of end-of-life resources; guiding you in death. (Also called 'assisted suicide.')(Sounds like Soylent Green to me.)

Page 429 Lines 1-9: An "advanced-care planning consultant" will be used frequently as a patient's health deteriorates.

Page 429 Lines 10-12: An "advanced care consultation" may include an ORDER for end-of-life plans.. (AN ORDER TO DIE FROM THE GOVERNMENT?!?)

Page 429 Lines 13-25: The GOVT will specify which doctors can write an end-of-life order.. (I wouldn't want to stand before God after getting paid for THAT job!)

Page 430 Lines 11-15: The Govt will decide what level of treatment you will have at end-of-life! (Again -- no choice!)

Page 469: Community-Based Home Medical Services = Non-Profit Organizations. (Hello? ACORN Medical Services here!?!)

Page 489 Sec 1308: The Govt will cover marriage and family therapy. (Which means Govt will insert itself into your marriage even.)

Page 494-498: Govt will cover Mental Health Services including defining, creating, and rationing those services.

Health care is the holy grail of socialism. Those leading out in this demogoguery know that if they get health care they will eventually have it all. Once you turn your body over to the state, what else is there? Your mind.

There are so few in our nation that are keeping their minds now - doing their homework - it will be a small step to surrender completely. And why not? It is so much easier just to let the mainstream do your thinking for you. No decisions. No angst.

It will be just wonderful until this demotivated system grinds down to the level of Cuba. It is only when there is not enough food that people wake up, and then they are prisoners.

I notice that in the case of Cuba and Canada (with their hate thought crimes) - the socialist system does not stop at telling you what level of health you can have - they also tell you what thoughts you are allowed to think.

That email was going around last year. Probably some of what actually passed is the same, but none of the above is necessarily a part of the final bill. It would be much more productive if you could find up to date information to post.

We already have that to a certain extent. Political correctness. The news will pillory people for expressing thoughts out of their mainstream. (Sarah Palin is a good example.)

Nothing is free unless he who gives it is God. Otherwise, someone must pay.

Wow, I just realized that I grew up in the socialist state of the United Kingdom. That Margret Thatcher, she was a socialist after all!!

She presided over a socialist system, but she didn't create it, and she worked hard to swing things back toward capitalism.

In a television interview for Thames TV "This Week" on February 5, 1976. Prime Minister Thatcher said, "...and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them."

I don't think any one with real understanding of UK politics would concluded that it was/is a socialist system. During her premiership, there was a house of Lords, unelected peers and life peers, a queen. Hardly socialist. What is socialist about the UK system of government?

Margaret Thatcher on the National Health Service:

"I, along with something like 5 million other people, insure to enable me to go into hospital on the day I want; at the time I want, and with a doctor I want."

Answering questions at a general election news conference (4 June, 1987). Mrs Thatcher had been asked if she trusted the Health Service enough to put herself in its hands, a reference to her use of private health insurance.

You could always go to see, any doctor you wanted at any time you wanted, except that you had to pay. My mother used private insurance sometimes. That's ok right?

So, what about the socialist government of the UK?

The people of the United States don't view socialism in the same way that the British do. You might say "socialism" is a completely different animal in England/Australia/Canada and Europe than it is in the United States. That's because each of our countries has a different political history and different understanding of freedom, and these have greatly influenced the way we see socialism. Socialism and socialistic ideas [for instance, fabianism] in England have a long and rich history, and it has typically been democratic and relatively peaceful. We, on the other hand, have never seen socialism in this way. If one looks at the history of socialism in this country, he will see a clear pattern of socialism's association with Marxism-Leninism and world revolution. That's been the history of most of the socialist organizations in the United States. For us, therefore, socialism means government taking freedom from the people. It means government taking the individual's rights and property away, and substituting the government's authority in place of the private citizens. Americans generally want the means of production and propety to remain in private hands. Most Americans want the federal government to be as unintrusive as possible. There's the saying, "The best government is that which governs least."

A major difference between how Americans see socialism and how the British see it is shown by the fact that there are millions of Americans who would take up arms against any power which attempts to establish socialism in this country against the will of the people. The way Americans see it is that we didn't go through the Cold War and win it against communism only in order become a socialistic state ourselves. In their view, anyone would be considered a traitor to this country who tries to bring socialism into our governmental system.

I think that if the American government is going to become socialistic in any way, it should be because the American people are told directly of it and are given an opportunity to debate it and vote one way or the other. Socialism shouldn't be brought in under the table or through any means that is not completely above board, and straightforward. It should label itself for what it is. Socialists should say openly they are socialists and not be elected as something else and then reveal by their actions that they are socialistic.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

I think perception is the key word here.

If the UK is socialist then so is the USA. There is a lot of ignorance about life in Europe. I had a conversation with someone over Thanksgiving and they were telling me about socialist life in the UK. Here we some of the things they said:

Its almot impossible buy land in the UK.

It's hard to own a house.

It's hard to set up a company.

The PM has the power to "just make laws"

The UK system of government is "winner take all" so the opposition has no power.

The government is centralized.

The government runs everything.

Education is run by the central government.

Health is run by the central government

You can't get operations.. etc.

These are all false. The ignorance was stunning. The ignorance about the nature of socialism is equally stunning.

Do you think that Brits would not fight to stop a take over of their government. What was WW2 about, come on!!!!!

Quote:
think that if the American government is going to become socialistic in any way,

Socialistic???? What does the American system of government of system have that the UK system doesn't have, lets get specific.

Excellent comparison, Lazarus. Yes, the USA has gradually become more socialistic since the introduction of the income tax.

Why are we not fighting the gradual usurpation of every aspect of life by the government? Because it is easier not to. Laziness. There is a common misconception that it is the government's job to protect our liberty. This is a lie. When it comes to protecting liberty, the government is the enemy from which liberty must be protected.

The government long ago figured out that as long as we were physically comfortable and had enough to eat, we would probably not revolt or even care much what it was doing. One of the first things it did in its inexorable growth was to subsidize the food industry, so that the populace would always have full stomachs.

Our country becomes more socialist with each new tax and each tax increase.

Here is a list of some of the taxes imposed in the last 100 years.

Actually it is still true that the rich carry the rest of us. We all pay the same plethora of little taxes and fees, but the rich are WAY out there on the largest taxes - on property, sales tax on big ticket items and tax on income. Their taxes are higher because they own more property, buy more expensive things, and make more money.

The income taxes on the rich are amazingly higher than ours and the percentage they pay is climbing, contrary to campaign rhetoric. The bottom 50% of the income ladder pays only 4% of all income taxes. The top 10% of the income ladder (those making over $113K/yr) pays 71% of all income taxes.

Posted

Wrong... that really just sounds like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glen Beck talking points.

The combined income of the middle class is much larger than the combined income of the upper class. The upper class pay their fair share indeed... but so do the middle class. The fact is that all of the income of the upper-class combined isn't enough to fund the government even if the government took it all. The middle class is essential to paying the tax bill. The government knows that and that is why so many of the taxes on the middle class are hidden.

From Wikipedia:

As of 2007, there are about 138 million taxpayers in the United States. The Treasury Department in 2006 reported, based on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data, the share of federal income taxes paid by taxpayers of various income levels. The data shows the progressive tax structure of the U.S. federal income tax system on individuals that reduces the tax incidence of people with smaller incomes, as they shift the incidence disproportionately to those with higher incomes - the top 0.1% of taxpayers by income pay 17.4% of federal income taxes (earning 9.1% of the income), the top 1% with gross income of $328,049 or more pay 36.9% (earning 19%), the top 5% with gross income of $137,056 or more pay 57.1% (earning 33.4%), and the bottom 50% with gross income of $30,122 or less pay 3.3% (earning 13.4%).

More Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck talking points. I would say thanks but I already heard those talking points before.

Yes. Let me say that again. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Just so that no one has to post the talking points again: yes. I know the wealthy pay the greatest amount of federal income tax.

Of course we all know that federal income tax is only a fraction of the revenues the government collects through taxes. 45% of federal revenue comes from income tax. 36% comes from the Social Security tax and the middle class carry most of that burden. 12% comes from corporate income tax which is paid for by the consumers of corporate goods. 7% comes from various other taxes like that on gasoline and telephone service.

Now if one wants to start talking about state and local taxes the middle class is again the ones carrying the water. The fat man dances while the thin man pays the band.

Is there a rule about being disingenuous here?

45%, as far as fractions go, is a pretty good sized fraction.

Everybody (who still goes to work) in this country pays SS/Medicare tax, which is the same (12.4% up to $106,800 in income per year.) Self-employed people pay the entire amount. Employed people split it with their employers. Medicare tax is a flat 2.9% with no income ceiling. How does that translate to the middle class paying more? Middle class pays less. The less you make the less you pay.

Only if a rich person manages to consume less than a poor or middle class person does he pay less of the multitude of "use" taxes like those on gasoline, telephone, electricity. What are the chances that the rich will consume less?

Concerning state taxes: personal income tax systems vary widely across states, leading to different levels of progressivity. Forty-three states and the District of Columbia have an individual income tax. Eight of these states apply a single tax rate to all taxable income, while the remaining states have multiple tax brackets and rates. The key word in the flat tax states is "taxable income." Some income is not taxable. Therefore, even in flat tax states, the higher the income, the greater the tax. There is no case being made here for the middle class paying more than the rich. The rich pay more compared to the middle class.

Cold-hearted conservatives (not the compassionate ones) continuously misrepresent the facts. They refer to the federal income tax as if that is the only tax anyone pays. It is less than 50% of federal revenues!!!

Our tax system is fair. Everyone pays the same in each tax bracket. I pay the same taxes on my first $20,000 of income as anyone else with the same number of dependents. I pay the same on my second $20,000 of income as anyone else with the same number of dependents. I pay the same on my third $20,000 of income as anyone else with the same number of dependents. And so on up the economic ladder.

Nice dodge, Shane. This was not what was under discussion. Let's try some truth here.

We weren't comparing what rich people pay to what other rich people in their same bracket were paying. What would be the point? There is no point to what you posted above.

We were looking at the fact that the bracket for the rich is, in the case of income tax, a higher percentage than the bracket for the middle class.

If a person makes twice as much money as another person does, he pays a higher percentage on ALL of his taxable income. He does not pay the same on the first $20k as the person who makes less.

Why are you posting this bogus stuff?

Posted

I think Billy Joel was right when he said honesty is such a lonely word.

I pay the same amount of tax on my first $20,000 of income as a CEO making $10 million/year with four dependents does on his fist $20,000 of income. Now that CEO pays more taxes than I do but not on his first $20,000, second $20,000 or third $20,000 of income.

Quote:
If a person makes twice as much money as another person does, he pays a higher percentage on ALL of his taxable income. He does not pay the same on the first $20k as the person who makes less.

That is incorrect. Each tax bracket has its own rate. For example:

(This is only a hypothetical example)

$1 - $10,000 - 0%

$10,000 - $20,000 - 5%

$20,000 - $40,000 - 10%

$40,000 - $60,000 - 15%

$60,000 - $80,000 - 20%

$80,000 - $100,000 - 25%

$100,000 - $150,000 - 30%

$150,000 - $250,000 - 35%

$250,000+ - 38%

Now it isn't that simple because there are various tax credits, deductions, etc. But that is the basic idea.
