I can decide to abort at a time my baby could survive yet I am to stupid to make decisions as to how much salt I can or should consume

U.S. regulators are planning a push to gradually cut the amount of salt Americans consume, saying less sodium would reduce deaths from hypertension and heart disease, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday.

The effort would eventually lead to the first legal limits on the amount of salt allowed in processed foods, the newspaper reported. The plan is to be launched this year but officials have not set salt limits.

The government plans to work with the food industry and health experts to reduce sodium gradually over a period of years to ratchet down sodium consumption, the newspaper said, citing U.S. Food and Drug Administration sources.

U.S. researchers said in a recent study that working with the food industry to cut salt intake by nearly 10 percent could prevent hundreds of thousands of heart attacks and strokes over several decades and save the U.S. government $32 billion in healthcare costs.

Eating too much salt is a major cause of high blood pressure, which the Institute of Medicine, one of the National Academies of Sciences, last week declared a "neglected disease" that costs the U.S. health system $73 billion a year.

The FDA, which regulates most processed foods, and the U.S. Agriculture Department, which oversees meat and poultry, will work together on the effort to reduce Americans' sodium consumption.

Manufacturers can now use as much salt as they like in products but they are required to report the amount on nutrition labels.

Many food makers have already begun to cut salt content.

In March, PepsiCo Inc, which owns the Pepsi, Frito-Lay and Quaker brands, announced that it plans a reduction of 25 percent in the average sodium per serving in major global food brands in key markets by 2015.

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow. News like this makes one glad to be an American. This is long overdue.

I am glad you like it.Maybe you could answer a couple of questions.

The US decided that abortion is legal and to try to prevent a abortion was to attempt to tell a woman what she could do with her own body. And an invasion of her privacy.

If a woman can make a decision as important as abortion and the decision as to what she does with her own body, why are the citizens viewed as to stupid to decide how much salt they should consume. Salt consumption doesn't even come close as baby destruction

Uh, that was only one question, Bonnie. If people are sick enough to vote for candidates who don't mind killing unborn babies with taxpayer money, why should they care what these people do in other areas?

This is a natural outgrowth of the nanny state. If we're paying for your health care, we're going to force you to live healthfully. Next it will be calories. And there might be some health benefits from it, but liberty is out the window, and those who want to indulge in a little salt or a few extra calories become criminals.

Sing-sing for people caught with fast food on their breath.

The next thing is tanning beds. They have been turned into an addiction.

There are those that do seem to want a nanny

The US Supreme Court decided this. Not the people via an election. Not the elected Representatives in Congress. I disagree with the Supreme Court. I believe public policy should be to decrease the number of abortions performed.

I guess that would be one way of getting Bill Clinton there.

This wasn't about abortion or reducing the numbers.I doubt whether the salt police are going to have the american people vote on one more intrusion.

If I cannot be prevented from destroying my unborn child based on "my right to do with my body as I see fit",how do US regulators now think I would be to stupid to regulate my own salt intake

Those that are pro-life should favor salt restrictions because too much salt is not good for the unborn baby.

I successfully carried four children. I cared enough about the baby I was carrying to educate myself on bad vs good for my baby.

Some women smoke crack while they are pregnant. I know the Libertarians would like to see crack legal. I guess if a woman has access to information that tells her it is bad for her baby to smokes crack while pregnant that it should be legal. If she loves her baby, she won't smoke crack.

Wait a minute. What if she smokes crack anyway? Then what?

Myself, I kind of like a government that will try and to protect me from the crack dealers. I also like a government that will try to protect me from the big corporate food business that puts enough sodium in our food to kill an elephant.

We agree,if the expectant mother loves her baby she will do everything to safeguard the life she is carrying.

But as long as that mother is free to abort because it is not a child, who cares what she does in regards to "whatever it is"

Not sure how you have drifted from salt to crack.

Salt to crack is easy. Just read the thread. Both are bad for the body and the government has a right to safeguard public health.

Now going from salt to abortion is quite a leap.

The ruling behind Roe vs Wade was "the woman's right to privacy and no one had a right to tell her what she could do with her body. Those two reasons are given over and over.

Salt consumption is not likely to kill my baby. Even so,if I have a right to destroy the baby based on my right to do with my body as I see fit,I have a right to consume the amount of salt I choose.

In terms of damage to a human life, salt is rather low on the list.Abortion is almost certain to end a life.

Maybe you know something about salt consumption that I don't,but I would bet the farm on the action that would cause the most damage.

This is the thing, folks. Big food corporations are making Americans fat and killing them. Government needs to step in and stop the death factories.

Adventists have been preaching this for years and years. Adventists preach the health message and should welcome this type of government assistance to our cause.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.

Government legalizes and financially subsidizes abortion factories which, if the mother so chooses, cause the death of a completely different human being. What moral absolute allows a person to freely kill another but not themselves if they so choose?? Besides, McDonalds is not Auschwitz.

Shane even though I agree with you that food corporations are doing this to us. We will be slowing taking away our right to choice! I know we can't have it both ways, where many americans are crying for something to be done, but at the same time telling government that they shouldn't interfere in our lives. If people want to eat themselves into oblivion than that is there choice. And yes Adventist have been preaching a health message but at the same time they are allowing people to choose for themselves if they want it or not. People can see that living a healthy lifestyle is better for them but they need to choose it for themselves.

The food corporations are only doing what the majority of people wish to buy. No company is stupid enough to produce what the consumer doesn't want.

We have MacDonald's and Wendy's not because they are insisting

that we buy,but producing what we want to buy.

There would not be a market for sugar cereal's if the parents were not afraid to say No and mean it.

Blaming someone else and always having to be a victim or to make someone a victim has gotten to be the american way

The thing is, when a moderator hits the "edit" button the screen that comes up looks a lot like it would if the "quote" button was hit. I have made the mistake a few times but this last time is the first time I have gone past the point where I couldn't undo what I had done.
