karl Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 National Vegetarian Week is a great opportunity to look at food and its impact on the environment, animals and health. Vegetarian diet is the diet for this time. The average adult human burns about 2,000 calories per day, just living his or her life. We use almost all the calories that we consume to move around, breathe, and do everyday tasks. The same is true of farmed animals. For every pound of food that they are fed, only a fraction of the calories are returned in the form of edible flesh. The rest of those calories are burned away raising the animal to slaughter weight or contributing to feathers, blood, and other parts of the animal that are not eaten by humans. This is why animals raised for food have to eat as many as 16 pounds of grain to create just 1 pound of edible flesh. Go vegetarian. Quote
SivartM Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Plus, eating animals hurts them. :( Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." - Jesus
Dr. Rich Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 What are you trying to do, destroy cattle ranches and chicken ranches? The only thing on the mind of a cow or chicken is when do I get to eat and how do I keep from being eaten. If it were a bull and roster, then another thing would be on it's mind. But other than that, they probably don't think much. BTW--have you actually ever seen a 'happy cow'? No, not when it is depositing some fertilizer, but really now? Quote
SivartM Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 You can read animals' minds? You should be on TV! Oddly enough, those noises animals make when someone kills them are generally accepted as expressions of pain. Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." - Jesus

Suzanne Sutton Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Dick Gregory From The New Vegetarians by Rynn Berry: Q. Is your family vegetarian as well? A. Yes, my whole family is vegetarian. Ten of my 11 kids fast one day a week, and there hasn't been so much as one runny nose among them. Q. Have you influenced members of the black community to become vegetarian? Are a lot of black people becoming vegetarian now? A. Oh yes, it's just unbelievable, unbelievable. I would say that I am one of the biggest influences in America today on both blacks and whites, mainly beause of my college appearances. And in every book I write, I always mention something about vegetarianism. --The Vegetarian Revolution, by Giorgio Cerquetti. Suzanne Quote
