We're sure blessed today to have all these resources available to us. Imagine Martin Luther having these things. It seemed to him like a dream to think God would allow him to have only one Bible.

That's interesting. It's rare for people to say a literal translation of the Bible is their favorite. How literal is it, and who translated it and publishes it?

Quote:
GreatLakesGramma: Next year I plan to read my One Year Chronological Bible again. This is a print version, not an e-Sword version.

I think I have the same Bible and I really like it, too. Are you talking about the Chronological NKJV?

Quote:
GreatLakesGramma: My print study Bible, which I hardly use lately, is a parallel King James/New King James version. My husband has a parallel King James, New King James, NIV, New Living Translation, which he has pretty much worn out in the few years he's had it. He spends most of Sabbath reading it, and he reads through one version, then another, several times in one year. Until he got this one a few years ago, he had never read through the whole Bible, even though he grew up in the church. He's just not much of a reader.

This is great to hear. I'm really glad that having all these translations is paying off if when people like your husband read and study their Bibles.

Those parallel translations are wonderful and very useful for comparison. I think a person can see that despite the differences in some details, you really have the same essential story in all those translations.

I enjoyed reading your post. You and your husband are certainly getting full use out of the various translations.

John 3:16-17

Just tagging on here, not a response to any specific person...

Between those who sell God's Word for inflated prices to raise money for human organizations (yes, even those whose purpose is to preach the gospel), and those who condemn certain versions of the Bible as not being truly God's Word (or worse, describing them as a deception from Satan)...

...I am starting to think that we (as Christians) do not need atheists or secularists to undermine and disrespect the Bible, and our faith in it. We are perfectly capable of doing this ourselves.

Say what you like about Muslims, but they would NEVER permit their holy book to be treated in this manner (by those of either extreme).

Excellent points Aldona. I sometimes think that Jesus is just shaking his head when he sees the greed in the eyes of those selling his word for incredibly infladed (sp) prices.

I have started using the Bibles on the web site www.biblestudytools.com for some projects. Granted this is not an Adventist site, but you can compare up to thirty-some versions on one verse.

Another set of Bibles, which you can put on your computer, is located at www.onlinebible.org. This is an international organization dedicated to putting the Bible on as many computers as possible.

Using the versions on that web site (and other places, too), I usually find that no one version has all the correct readings, not even the King James. BTW when you quote the current King James Bible, you are quoting a revision of the 1611 version that was released in 1769. You wouldn't want to use the actual 1611 edition because the spelling and type are so different from modern usage.

These organizations that propose to give you gifts when you give are simply appealing to those people who want to get something out of their gift. Whether that is a good attitude or not, I don't know.

GreatLakesGramma: It was translated by Jay P. Green, Sr., copyright 1985. The only print source of this version that I know of was the Interlinear Hebrew-Greek-English Bible, second edition, a four-volume set. I have the New Testament, volume 4. I wanted to get the whole thing, but it was out of print when I learned of its existence, and the NT was all I could get from CBD. The other volumes, what I have found on eBay from time to time, are now selling for prices far beyond my means. It was published by Hendrickson Publishers. It is very literal, based on the Masoretic Text of the Old Testament, and the Received Text of the New Testament.

Oh sure, I know his work well. He's made several translations of the Bible. One is called King James II, which is very well done.

I saw the four volume set at a local Christian book store just the other day. I have the Interlinear of both OT and NT in one volume.

Hark! Henceforth and here-to-fore regardeth we of one amongst us who promoteth the honorable and verily esteemed KJV as the One-and Only True Rendition of Scripture as fickle and false unless they, before all men, can and do rightly speaketh the One-and-Only True Language, that peculiar tongue which King James verily hath spoken himself with his owne lips in days of olde, alas, nigh unto 800 yeares ago. Pray tell, whence hast time passest, anon?

My favorite translation for study is the Literal Translation, by Morris, I believe, vertically arranged by phrase with the Strong's numbers on the left side of the column. Click on the line, and magically, the Strong's definition appears in another box. Not that Strong's definitions are the last word, but it is interesting to see how KJV can deviate from the definitions, sometimes. Click in another place and 20-30 versions of a particular verse appear in another box.

I suspect there will be many in the Kingdom who have read neither the tongue-twisted KJV, KJV's illegitimate child: the NKJV, nor any other version of the Bible, be it one of many of Satan's Alleged English Translations, or not...

I am grateful for the translations of the Bible that I can read and enjoy. I suspect the meaning of Christ's words have not been completely misconstrued in more recent translations. I'm just not quite up to reading the Greek and Hebrew sources of the Bible at this time to ensure that I have not fallen for yet another mistranslation by atheists and God-haters and other agents of Satan.

I beleive we have more important work to do than dismiss modern translations. Rather, we should be rejoicing that there is a Bible for everyone. Now we can all learn what the LORD wants us to do, especially if we can read English. It's the Spirit we should concern ourselves about, not the dotting of "i's" or the crossing of "t's". All we really need concern ourselves about are the words of Christ, and how we are doing what he has told us to do.

Problem is, we have so many English Bibles, including the 3ABN $1000 gift Bibles. How many of them are actually read, studied, and taken to heart?

I agree. We have members here to teach that our Bible contains the writings of messengers from Satan. Others teach that various parts of the Bible can't be trusted, such as Jude and 2 Peter. And these are people who claim to be Christians.

Many Muslims would kill anyone who shows disrespect for the Qu'ran. That's how serious they are about their holy book. Should we do the same?

What would many Muslims do if they saw someone flush the Qu'ran down the toilet? They would kill the person. What would I do if I saw someone flush the Bible down the toilet? I would feel sorry for them and pray for them. Why? Because of our different perceptions of God.

We allow people the freedom to treat the Bible in horrible ways because we know that the true God wants people to be free to choose to accept or reject. Allah doesn't mind seeing people forced to accept him. Our God doesn't accept forced worship. So there's a big difference between the Allah of the Qu'ran and the God of the Bible.

Have you compared Morris' to Robert Young's Literal? It was made in the mid 1800s.

Young, of course, was the author of the Comprehensive Concordance of the Bible named after him.

When was Morris' translation made?

That's the one I really wanted, but it was not available at that time either. Could it be a newer edition?

I have Young's Bible on disc. I did not realize it was literal. It looked a lot like KJV.

I wouldn't recommend the Ellis version in Bible Library Suite because there are far too many errors in the Strong's numbers. At times I've had to pull the Strong's Concordance from the book shelf to find the definition that I was looking for.

That's one way to get a person away from the computer.

It's the Second Edition, 1986. I haven't checked to see if there is a newer edition than 1986. I saw another copy of the single edition at the Berean Christian book store last Thursday.

The multi-volume set I saw was at the same book store. I'm not sure, though, if it was just the NT or not.

Many thanks for that info. I will definitely get the Morris translation. I prefer them in book form.

Yes, Young's Bible is called "Young's Literal Translation." You should be able to get it online. I got it when it was being sold a long time ago at the Adventist Book Center. Young's Literal is based on the same Greek text as the KJV, but I have a feeling that Morris' might be based on the Critical text or maybe even the Majority Text.

Do you know whether it is or not?

Believe it or not, one of the best and most faithful translations of the Critical text is the Catholic translation, New American Bible. It is not a literal translation but it is very close to it.

The NAB has a unique and interesting way of saying things at times.

I don't know much about Morris' Literal Bible, except that I like to read it first, then look at all of the other English translations of a particular verse.

Only volume 4 is the New Testament. Volumes 1 through 3 are the Old Testament. I will have to look again and see if I can find a copy of the single volume somewhere, as I'd like to have it.

Is this like vanity press? Can anyone get their own "version" of the Bible? Maybe we could get our own Club Adventist version. We could call it the KSV (King Stan Version.) We could include an Epoch-rypha by dissenters from the authorized text. We could have footnotes by some of the joggers on CA. And margin comments - do we have any stock traders?

Just having fun, PK. I was going off on the word "version." I don't think the 3ABN Bible is s new version. I think it is new packaging for an old version.

What do you think?
