Moderators lazarus Posted June 28, 2010 Moderators Posted June 28, 2010 I don't like the new Remnant study Bible. Why is it OK to mix EGW's writings with scripture where Ellen White is more prominent than scripture. http://www.theremnantstudybible.com/flash/ Isn't this adding to scripture or am I over-reacting? Members abelisle Posted June 28, 2010 Members Posted June 28, 2010 Actually the timing is perfect since this fits with our new President's mindset for Adventist Bible study. EGW is the perfect "critical lens" for understanding Scripture. Alex Quote We are our worst enemy - sad but true. http://abelisle.blogspot.com
SivartM Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Are we including other study Bibles with notes in them as well, or just the one with Ellen's? Not sure you are! I kind of like the EGW quotes. I don't like it because it costs to much. :) Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
GreatLakesGramma Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I have a different study Bible, which I really like, "The Word In Life Study Bible, New Testament Edition." In that one there is more space devoted to the articles, references, and commentary scattered throughout, than to the actual Bible text. It's a good way to connect the information and commentary to the relevant scriptures, in a meaningful, interesting, and inspiring manner. Neil D Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I have a priniciple that I have used with scripture...that is one that Martin Luther used, I believe... Scripture is it's own interpreter. So, what is EGW going to add to this? If we interpret all scripture thru EGW, then don't we raise EGW to the same level or even above scripture? Didn't she say that she was "the lesser light pointing to the greater light"? Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw

Didn't she say that she was "the lesser light pointing to the greater light"? EGW herself pointed to the fact that she was not to be an interpreter for others, that the Word was to be it's own expositor. OTOH, any expositor of the Word, if it is not inconsistent with what the Word already reveals, would seem to me to be a requirement reminder, as preachers are suppose to be. Otherwise what need the preacher? "His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.” And with many other exhortations he preached to the people." Dr. Shane Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I enjoy reading Ellen Whites books a lot. I believe she received divine dreams and visions and that she spoke with angels. I have read all five books in the Conflict of the Ages series from cover to cover. However I do not believe her role was to be an inspired commentary on the Bible. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Shane, I agree with you totally here. EGW as an interpreter of the bible is NOT what she s about... Now, having said that I am troubled by our denomination's book and bible house creating the ClearWord for the expressed purpose of devotional reading.... My question to that is why? Why does the church need a "devotional" bible? To me, what is the differnce between this "devotional Bible" and the one that the JW's use- Duey Version of the Bible. We all know that it has errors regarding the Godhead....And why do we have to read and reflect on someone else's thoughts ? It strikes me as what Communist countrys used to do with required reading of Lenin and Chairman Mao...If this is the way to brainwash a couple of countrys, why would I want to be religiously brainwashed by my denomination? Those are my thoughts.... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw

Neil D Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Never heard of it....please explain it's origins.... Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
Woody Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 It originated at Andrews. A number of scholars such as your neighbor George Knight contributed to it. I don't have the info handy. It is very recent. Dr. Shane Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I don't like the Clear Word. I think the idea was to create an Adventist version of The Living Bible. I am not a big fan of the Living Bible either. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity

EGW is the perfect "critical lens" for understanding Scripture. Alex So much for sola scriptura. I stopped by the Remnant publications booth at GC and made this comment to the lady handing out info. She said I was only the second person who made this comment out of many who appreciated the publication. I fear we are losing our hold on scripture itself. Many SDA members I know take EGW as the final word of truth over scripture. If you have an EGW quote that's the end of the discussion. In the opening pages of the remnant Bible you have a bio of EGW that comes before info about the Bible itself. Lord have mercy! Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 28, 2010 Moderators Posted June 28, 2010 The ANDREWS STUDY BIBLE (NOTE: It is a Study Bible.) has just come off of the press. It is being sold in hard cover for as little as $40. Other editions cost more. As a Study Bible it has a lot of commentary and explanatory material included. It is a good Bible. The Remenant Bible is a private publication by an independent ministry. I doubt that the White Estate gave them permission to print the EGW Material. As that material is in the public domain they were not required to get permission. They print a lot of stuff for SDAs but it is all privately printed. Quote Gregory
Moderators Gregory Matthews Posted June 28, 2010 Moderators Posted June 28, 2010 I don't like the Clear Word. I think the idea was to create an Adventist version of The Living Bible. I am not a big fan of the Living Bible either. The Clear Word came out of the attempt of a scholar to put the Bible into language that children (his relatives) could understand. It has value as long as it is understood to be a dynamic translation and not a formal translation, and is only used from that perspective. The priblem arose when it was first printed and titled: THE CLEAR WORD BIBLE. That brought about so much discussion that the word "BIBLE" was removed from the title. Current problems continue as some people use it for in-depth doctrinal study which is inappropriate. Quote Gregory
SivartM Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Fun Fact: Thomas Nelson, a non-Adventist Bible publishing house, was the one that suggested a Bible with Ellen White notes.
