I guess I'm over-reacting?

Actually the timing is perfect since this fits with our new President's mindset for Adventist Bible study.

EGW is the perfect "critical lens" for understanding Scripture.

Let's not turn her into Pope :) ... she made mistakes, and corrected her views as time went on. I'm sure that if she had more time, she'd corrected more.

I don't like the Clear Word. I think the idea was to create an Adventist version of The Living Bible. I am not a big fan of the Living Bible either.

No, I don't think it was. My information was that this was a personal project that Blanco did that was never intended to be anything other than a devotional.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

I have a Reformation KJV Bible with EGW comments which I really enjoy. The comments are a blessing to me.

I do have a Remnant Bible on hand but I don't use it as much mainly because the NKJV is not my favourite version. Having said that though, I AM looking forward to acquiring a copy of the Andrews Study Bible! Those comments are by some of my favourite authors :)

There are a LOT of study Bibles out there.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

You are correct. This was the result of Jack Blanco's personal study method where he paraphrased Scripture verse by verse, wrting it out in his own words based according to his understanding of the text. He did this as his own personal devotional study so tha the could understand it better. After sharing his study with close friends and family, they encouraged him to have his efforts published.

(By the way, the method is an excellent way to understand the meaning of any written material far better than the classic method of rote memorization and recitation of quotes. Rewriting something in your own words forces you to actually think about it. - Unashamed plug for a core premise of the Original Thoughts forum...)

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

*Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth.

(And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

I agree with you, Tom! And as a bonus this is a better help to memorize those Scriptures that mean so much to you. Thanks for mentioning it!

Now if you were to do this and someone found out, collected your thoughts and published them as a Bible, wouldn't you be shocked?

My current concern is that other evangelical groups might use it against us in the future..

I agree, because they know that Ellen White is not quite the same to us as the authors that write the articles and references in other study Bibles, including the Andrews Bible.

It's the same with the Clear Word. They never should have included the word "Bible" in the title. Even since it's been taken off, some people in our church still use it as a Bible.

I fear we are losing our hold on scripture itself. Many SDA members I know take EGW as the final word of truth over scripture. If you have an EGW quote that's the end of the discussion.

Only if one hasn't read the Word consistently enough to continue the conversation with intelligent responses from it's authority.

"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear " 1 Peter 3:15 KJV

When a member says to me "you can make the Bible say anything you want it to say" you know that whatever the scripture says it make make no difference. It's EGW that really counts. This person was a firm believer in EGW but not so much in the Bible it seems.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

But... you can make the Bible say anything you want it to say...

Then again, you can do the same to Ellen.

I don't think you can make the Bible say anything you want it to. Without turning, twisting, rationalizing, spritualizing, and jumping through hoops. And when a person is doing that, it becomes very appearant, and is easy to spot.

But when a person says: "you can make the Bible say anything you want it to say", you can be sure that it says whatever they want it to. Same with EGW,

These people are not honest with themselves.

But to you someone else is twisting the Bible while to them you are twisting the Bible. They would say that you are not being honest with yourself while you would say that you are the only honest person. You would be putting yourself above all others.

Once you become convinced that everything you believe is absolute truth, and that there is no way you can be wrong, you are making yourself "like God".

I knew that was coming. Nice twist. But I am not convinced that everything I know is absolute truth. I am convinced that the pillars of our faith were given to us by God, and are not to be tampered with.

What's the difference?

I'm not talking about specific doctrines... I'm talking about everything one believes about the Bible.

Although, generally speaking, ignorance of the Word and a reticence to ask to be taught by the Holy Spirit can make a person honestly believe they know the Truth without a deliberate intention to excuse one's own lack IMO.

"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—"Eph 4:11-15 NKJV

Excellent posts LHC and Richard, I totally agree.
