I think there was a serious backlash against Dan Rather. Don't forget that he soon "retired". He lost his coveted evening news anchor slot. CBS Evening News has never recovered from that. It lost its historic credibility and gravitas of the Cronkite era and is at the bottom of the evening news heap.

That isn't what I asked tho. Did you personally react as you are now? Were you so incensed over Dan Rather that you went to the pains of locking a thread so that no one could disagree with your dislike of Dan Rather?

I doubt that Sherrod is suffering much as a result.She is still owed an apology if she has not received one.The difference here is this was not an attempt to go after her,a complete unknown.Dan Rather deliberately went after Bush with the intent to smear him.

This was a result of the NAACP trying to have it sound as if the tea party movement was a haven and gathering place for racism.

No I didn't. Who is to fess up? The party that gave the tape to Beirtbart? Beirtbart for airing what he thought was authentic? The NAACP for enjoying the little blurb about racist behavior?

The NAACP for not checking their own records as this was a speech given to them.Seems they jumped on the bandwagon quickly as well and they were there.

It should have been checked ,I am surprised it wasn't. But more surprising is the whoop-la over this when the "killing of white babies" and voter intimidation received a big yawn by the same people now moaning about it.

Personally I don't believe all the angst that is going on over racism after seeing the reaction to something more serious.

Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton,those champion race baiters didn't see a problem either.

Well so far the Secretary of Agriculture has fessed up and admitted he was the one that screwed up for the Obama Administration. He has apologized. The White House has issued an official apology. Obama has apologized to Mrs. Sherrod personally. The NAACP admitted they goofed in not checking it out and that they had been duped. They have apologized.

I have not yet seen anything from those that did the hack edit job on Sherrod's speech that Beirtbart supposedly got it from. As for Beirbart, his comments hardly sounded apologetic. He justified his posting of the out of context video as serving his purposes to go after the NAACP because they had targeted the so called Tea Party movement as being racist. And he seemed to be pointing the finger at others rather than taking any personal responsibility.

And then there is Fox News. Only O'Reily apologized. But Fox and friends and others that had led with and dwelt on the story repeatedly and at length did not. And to make it worse they simply turned the coverage into a blame the Obama administration for not checking it out before they acted on it. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

If all racism bothers you then can I assume I will find this same type of posts concerning the black panthers and the lack of the NAACP to respond to something so clearly racist and downright dangerous to incite the fruit loops.

If it is only the racism you claim to see, in this case your aversion to racism is not very convincing.

Whoever was responsible for giving the tape should apologize,no doubt about it. It still was not meant as a act of racism towards this woman.The desire to"Kill white babies" is the worst kind of racism and nary a yawn.

Those that created the out of context edited video apparently had an agenda that had racism at its core with no sense of integrity and honesty. THe guy that put it on his website admittedly had a racially charged agenda.

But the real and worst mistake had little or nothing to do with racism. It was plain and simple a journalistic screw up by a supposedly trustworthy news source.

Fox News is supposed to report the news and do some background investigation like responsible journalists before they air it. They didn't even do the basic Journalism 101 stuff and ran the story verbatim as it appeared on the blogsite, but with a more sensational title. And when they were exposed by accurate reports, they feigned shock and surprise that the Administration hadn't done its homework before acting on Fox News' story. And they never acknowledged they screwed up. Why is that? Did they not even know they had?

Or did it not matter because it all served a propoganda agenda both in the false telling and then in the finger pointing at the Administration? Is that what we expect of fair and balanced news?

Perhaps you haven't watched Morning Joe on MSNBC - hardly a liberal morning talk show.

It is all about the ratings, Tom. It is about advertising revenue. That is what the news networks are all about. Don't lose site of that. The reason they report what they do, when they do and how they do is all about ratings and revenues.

FOXNews was born because the mainstream media in the US was slanted so politically liberal that FOX saw a market waiting to be tapped. They tapped into that market of hungry conservatives wanting to leave the mainstream media. That is the key to their success. Do you think this story is going to hurt their ratings? That is what MSNBC is hoping for. I doubt all those FOXNews conservatives are going to flock over to MSNBC.

Stories like this are not that uncommon. Network and cable news channels normally do a couple of retractions each year. If the Obama Administration hadn't fired Sherrod, this story would have gotten little attention.
