I have heard that we need to make friends with people

then they will listen to what we have to say

I think friendship trumps theology. Of course, it does. Or, at least, it should.

Does your theology demand civility? Can I be civil without being friendly?

Doug,

My theology does not, indeed cannot, demand civility. It does, however, prefer civility. Regarding your second question, sure, you may be civil without being freindly. Do you want to? If so, Why?

My Christianity demands civility.Since my Christianity is my theology it follows that my theology also demands my civility,it is not an option.Civility implies respect.Respect invites friendship.Paradoxically, theology also sets the boundries of friendship."Can two walk together unless they are agreed?" Ultimately, theology trumps friendship because a person's theology determines who they choose to befriend and the depth of that bond."Whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." That's my take.

If I may interject something here....

And if I may mirror this back to you....

It's YOUR Christianity that demand civility from YOU...It's YOUR theology that demand YOUR civility...That is NOT an option FOR YOU..YOUR civility implies that YOU give respect.

Now, where I disagree....While respect invites friendship, it does not demand it. And YOUR theology does not set MY boundarys since MY theology may not coincide with yours. Theology, however, invites discussion...sometimes most heatedly...

But it is something else that determines who you choose to befriend and the depth of that bond. It is love....love for the other person....please note the love between David and Jonathon, spaning generations...even after one is gone...

It is not YOUR theology that sets MY boundaries...It is MY theology that sets MY boundaries....

And remember, God loved the world so much that He gave His Son to die on a cross for us. And while being friends of the world and it's pleasures is not what Christ intended for us, being ambassadors for Christ is intended for us...sharing what Christ did for the world...That is a good foundation/example for friendship..

Just my take on your "Theology trumps friendship" theme and it's flaws...

Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve.

Doug,

I started to reply, then decided to read Neil's reply. It's a good thing, otherwise I would have been redundant. Yes, when I read your initial question, I thought you were asking if my theology required civility from you. In general, there is nothing that my theology would take issue with in your last post.
