Guest Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Why would that be great Stan? What would that accomplish for us? Maybe I am overlooking something. Maybe Bravus won a soul to Jesus while he was there. In that case, we should all be doing what he did. Quote

Members phkrause Posted October 9, 2010 Members Posted October 9, 2010 I hope your time was well spent Bravus? Did you know anyone? or just went for the experience of being with others? I've been to a few synagogue's but never had an oppurtunity to visit my cousins at a mosque. If I still lived in NY I might have by now. I do hope you had a good experience. Moderators Bravus Posted October 9, 2010 Author Moderators Posted October 9, 2010 I went to the wedding of one of my PhD students. She's a Muslim lady from Brunei, who met her beau (also Muslim but raised in Queensland) while she was here. It was a very interesting wedding service and experience. Moderators John317 Posted October 9, 2010 Moderators Posted October 9, 2010 I think it's great to go to the Mosque with an intention of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, but not merely in order to experience a different culture or show that we are broad-minded. Christians very rarely attend the Mosque for the purpose of uplifting Christ as the Savior of the world. I personally favor studying the Koran and the Muslim religion in order to understand their religion and be able to talk to Muslims about Jesus, but that doesn't mean everyone should do this; just like not all SDAs should start studying the catechism or attending the Baptist or the Catholic churches. Here are some of the things on the site you gave the link to: October 5 at 7:43am Journal of Adventist Mission Studies ‎"Muslims . . . can tell you what you would like to hear, not being concerned of the truthfulness of the answer. October 3 at 6:48am Journal of Adventist Mission Studies ‎"The concept of collective honor is behind tensions between Kurds, Shiites, and Sunnis in Iraq today. It is very puzzling, however, to see how these tribal tensions disappear when the common territory has to be defended." October 2 at 11:44am Journal of Adventist Mission Studies ‎"Genealogy is very important when it comes to honor. In this context, age is considered to bring with it wisdom and honor. In Mediterranean cultures old age is in such high esteem that people often exaggerate their age" (Cristian Dumitrescu, JAMS vol 1, no 1). The most cherished cultural value is honor. No effort and care is spared in order to avoid shame. For a Muslim, life consists of the intricate dynamics that take place between honor and shame" (Cristian Dumitrescu..., Shame and Honor: Biblical Understandings and Islamic Cultural Reflections, JAMS vol 1, no 1). What have we done? Does the Koran really command Muslims to kill Christians? Did Islam really force conversions by the sword? What are they trying to achieve? Dr. Shane Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 OK, excuse my ignorant question... but did they speak English? Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Find me at www.PostumCafe.com Author of Peculiar Christianity
Moderators Bravus Posted October 9, 2010 Author Moderators Posted October 9, 2010 The prayers and ceremonial parts were in Arabic (I assume) and were sung. The imam used a microphone and there was a speaker up in the dome so that the singing reverberated. The questions and responses were in English and he gave a short (and pretty secular) homily on marriage, with a couple of 'pastor jokes', in English. The balding gentleman toward the left of the photo was a family friend of the groom. The groom's father passed away a few years ago, so that gentleman said a few words at the wedding reception. He switched fluently from Arabic to English, but he grew up on the Gold Coast (near here) himself, so his English had a much stronger Aussie accent than mine does! Quote Truth is important
Liz Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Very cool Bravus, did you get any other wedding pictures? At the beginning of the summer we went to a Hindu/Buddhist wedding. It was performed in Hindi, but we had a little booklet that told us what was going on and what everything meant. It was really neat.
