Can adventist women wear pants?

Thanks, Taylor, for your comment. George Knight's work helped me love EGW more, too, as not only a prophet but a mother, spiritual worker, societal reformer, neighbour and friend. AND from what I've read she did have a sense of humour, too.

Amen! Couldn't agree more. Thank the Lord for her writings for for those who promote her like Dr. Knight. He has been such a blessing to our church!

I see adventist women in pants often. It has been that way for awhile. This thread topic doesn't make sense.

It would probably be most appropriate if pants had the Bible-cross-flame logo embroidered on the back pockets.

Maybe you should start a new line of apparel with that logo on available only through Adventist Book Centers...... except..... that I don't know anybody who has ever made a living selling exclusively to Adventists.... I think that, maybe, I could have that embroidered on the pocket of my shirt with the clerical collar. Cheers, Nuff sed

I see adventist women in pants often. It has been that way for awhile. This thread topic doesn't make sense.

In the church that I attend, (The Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement)women are not allowed to wear pants. I don't agree with it but I wanted to know if there was any anything that could possibly back this up. So the topic makes sense to me.

This pants or no pants for women discussion has been going on forever! Maybe we should all adopt the clothing style depicted in pictures of the Bible patriarchs. Of course the way we will be able to tell the difference between men and women is that the men MUST grow beards--long, flee infested ones! . . .

Then I'd be in trouble! I'm not a hairy man like Esau, but smooth like Jacob.

Hi Lazarus,

I stand somewhat corrected. Pants within the reform outfit are covered by a dress, as in some of these illustrations. The important principal is modesty. Not sure if your chemise is traditional Muslim attire.

Proper clothing will not advertise the form of a man or woman, nor draw one's attention where it should not rest.

Muslim men often wear long shirts (chemise) to cover their buttocks and below, out of respect for their fellow men when all bow to pray in the mosques. Would that Christians were so aware, concerned and considerate.

Oh so Gordon, you are a Reformed Adventist? I.E. you do not belong to the same church as the "regular" SDA church? If so that would explain alot of your views.

(I've noticed that in order to really make a thread topic catch fire, you should start a discussion on dress, jewelry, music styles or the finer points of what foods are/ are not allowed in order to be spared by the Nutrition Police.)

I think that's a good principle. Your attire should be modest enough to cover what needs to be covered, and people should be in no doubt as to whether you are a male or a female when they look at you.

Go to the department store and hold up a pair of men's pants and a pair of women's pants. There is a difference, and you can tell right away which is which.

My husband would look ridiculous if he tried to wear my pants, and I would look stupid if I put on his pants.

In Biblical times both genders would have worn some kind of robe. I can just imagine the arguments about what constitutes a man's robe vs. a woman's robe.

Watched the first 10 minutes. It was great! There was nothing in it that was disparaging or cheap.

Seems we have different perspectives.

Perhaps most egregious is his publication of personal correspondence between Ellen White and her husband.

Shameful. I hope GK's preparing an apology.

Here are some quotes that I have found and that you may have heard in the presentation. The first one deals with fashion and would include pants.

Do not, my sisters, trifle longer with your own souls and with God. I have been shown that the main cause of your backsliding is your love of dress. This leads to the neglect of grave responsibilities, and you find yourselves with scarcely a spark of the love of God in your hearts. Without delay, renounce the cause of your backsliding, because it is sin against your own soul and against God. Be not hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Fashion is deteriorating the intellect and eating out the spirituality of our people. Obedience to fashion is pervading our Seventh-day Adventist churches and is doing more than any other power to separate our people from God. I have been shown that our church rules are very deficient. All exhibitions of pride in dress, which is forbidden in the word of God, should be sufficient reason for church discipline. If there is a continuance, in face of warnings and appeals and entreaties, to still follow the perverse will, it may be regarded as proof that the heart is in no way assimilated to Christ. Self, and only self, is the object of adoration, and one such professed Christian will lead many away from God. {1TT 600.1}

There is a terrible sin upon us as a people, that we have permitted our church members to dress in a manner inconsistent with their faith. We must arise at once and close the door against the allurements of fashion. Unless we do this, our churches will become demoralized. {1TT 600.2}

This one deals with pants and touches on jewelry.

There is still another style of dress that will be adopted by a class of so-called dress reformers. They will imitate the opposite sex as nearly as possible. They will wear the cap, pants, vest, coat, and boots, the last of which is the most sensible part of the costume. Those who adopt and advocate this style of dress, are carrying the so-called dress reform to very objectionable lengths. Confusion will be the result. Some who adopt this costume may be correct in their views in general upon the health question, but they could be instrumental in accomplishing vastly more good if they did not carry the matter of dress to such extremes. {RH, February 6, 1900 par. 7}

In this style of dress God's order has been reversed, and his special direction disregarded. "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment; for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God." Deut. 22:5. This style of dress God would not have his people adopt. It is not modest apparel, and is not at all fitting for modest, humble females who profess to be Christ's followers. God's prohibitions are lightly regarded by all who would advocate the doing away of the distinction of dress between males and females. The extreme positions taken by some dress reformers upon this subject cripple their influence. {RH, February 6, 1900 par. 8}

God designed there should be a plain distinction between male and female dress, and has considered the matter of sufficient importance to give explicit directions in regard to it; for the same dress worn by both sexes would cause confusion, and great increase of crime. The apostle Paul would utter a rebuke, were he alive, should he behold females professing godliness with this style of dress. "In like manner also that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works." The mass of professed Christians utterly disregard the teachings of the apostles, and wear gold, pearls, and costly array. {RH, February 6, 1900 par. 9}
